Project Management in Web
Design and Production
Project Management: Process
Project Management: Process
• According to Stubbs & Barksdale (2003), a great
web site development involved in 3 phases:
– Planning
– Constructing
– Testing
• These process also can be divided into the following steps:
– Pre-production
– Production
– Post production
Project Management: Process
1. Pre-Production (Planning)
• Analysis, planning and design
• Creating a blueprint for the website
• Ask yourself these Qs
– Who is the audience?
– What is the web message?
– What is its purpose?
– How will the information in the web be
organized? (organization)
Project Management: Process
– How will the web works? (interactivity)
– How will people get around in it? (navigation)
– Will it be easy to use? (usability)
– What will it look like? Will its “look”
complement its message?
• The process of asking these Qs & writing down
detailed answers or sketching – is called
DESIGN.
Project Management: Process
2. Production (Constructing)
• Content research
• Interface design
• Graphics development
• Animation development
• Audio recording
• Video production/editing
• Web authoring/programming
Project Management: Process
3. Post-Production (Testing)
• Testing and evaluation
– Content Testing (Is everything correct?)
– Functional Testing (Does it do what it is
supposed to do?)
– Usability Testing (It is easy to use?)
• Feedback from client
• Product revision
• Product documentation/packaging
The Web Development Team
Web Development Team
• How is web development is different from other
software/system development projects?
– Graphics and other media require special
skills
– Much more emphasis on designing for the
user
– Artistic and software design
– Requires instructional design
Web Development Team
• How is web development similar to other
software/system development projects?
– Software life cycle still applies:
analysis>design>
>implementation>testing>delivery>maintenan
ce
– Management skills: coordinating people with
different talents and agendas.
Web Development Team
• Different skills are required for the differing
activities:
– some activities require creativity,
– some require sound business acumen,
– some require a high level of technical expertise
• Necessary skills within a web development
team:
– Project Management - Programming
– Content - Architecture & Design
– Strategy

Web Development Team : Roles
1. Project Manager:
To attain the project objectives.
To deliver the right product at:
the right quality
in the project time scale
at the right price.
Web Development Team : Roles
• Coordinates initial start up meetings between all
parties
• Schedules additional meeting throughout the
project
• Clarify, publish, and communicate timelines and
milestones (establish deadlines)
• Breakdown the allocation of tasks and ensure all
agencies are aware of their schedule and
responsibilities
Web Development Team : Roles
2. Content Area Specialist:
• Provides all written materials directly to the
Project Manager in a digital format (i.e.,
Microsoft Word)
• Provides a copy of all non-digital (written)
material to the Project Manager.
• Is available to the web Development Team for
ongoing clarification regarding the
transformation and design of course materials.
Web Development Team : Roles
• Communicates course progress, barriers, and
modifications directly to the Project Manager
during weekly scheduled interactions.
• Reviews content design for factual integrity,
completeness and educational effectiveness
Web Development Team : Roles
3. Instructional Designer:
• Understand how to organize, manage, and
deliver information to create an effective
learning environment
• Understands the target audience and designs
the level of learning appropriate to their needs
Web Development Team : Roles
4. Web Developer/Programmer
• Someone who can implement programs that integrate media elements.
• Given a clear design and previously created media elements (graphics, sounds, video, etc.) a programmer creates running software for the title.
• Vaughan: “A web programmer is a software engineer who integrates all of the web elements into a seamless whole using an authoring language or programming language.”
