First Order Of Signs

Signage for vehicular traffic up to the roundabout south of Service Road will be planned and implemented under the guidance of HI and will be of the RMS-type design.

Second Order Of Signs

Between the roundabout and south entry into Service Road will be the first marker of the Hospital suite of signs.

All larger markers are internally illuminated for good visibility at night.

Third Order Of Signs

Smaller markers on site are predominantly for traffic management, drop offs and pickups and parking. These signs are not internally illuminated.

Fourth Order Of Signs

The new hospital features three entries, Emergency, Main Entry and Deliveries.

When all user groups arrive, they know to have arrived at the Hospital due to the first and second order of markers.

Therefore, the entries do not require a heavy population of signs but a confirmation of entries.

The first two entry signs are fixed to the awning fascia and are internally illuminated, the third identification does not require internal illumination.

5WAYFINDING & SIGNAGEPRINCIPLES

StrategyNew signage will be planned, designed and implemented in accordance with world’s best practice and evidence based design.

The following principles for wayfinding apply:

• People centric Information is primarily aimed at visitors;

• Creating Identity Clearly identifying the health facility to instill confidence;

• Clarity of Movement into and across the site Avoid any form of ambiguity;

• Connectivity

Provide seamless connections in accordance with progressive disclosure from the macro to the micro level;

• Future proofing Provide a signage system that allows for changes and expansion;

• Reinforce the main entrance to the site Clearly state the new main entry and paths to secondary destinations.

When applying wayfinding principles to a hospital site, we organise the peripheral roads and entries to the site with a clear hierarchical family of signs addressing mainly vehicular traffic, although pedestrian traffic will rely on these signs as well.

The signs are organised into main site identification signs at strategic locations featuring the hospital name at the top of the sign.

Secondary directional signs feature the hospital name as an endorsement at the base of the sign. Tertiary signs feature a regulation or a single direction. This strategy enforces best practice, that of creating clear information structure and hierarchy, avoiding ambiguity.

The signs are designed as a realistic and responsible answer to the type, size and budget of the project, hence white background and clear sans serif type appropriately sized will apply.

The pedestrian concourse (similarities to an airport layout) allow for uninterrupted sightlines and movement with little signage required, however the signage is hierarchical in accordance with progressive disclosure (macro to micro level).

The internal signage will follow the same principles and is flexible in terms of future changes. Signage is integrated with the building fabric and therefore allows for ceiling and wall mounted versions.

The terminology used for messages is subject to an agreed naming convention and should follow best practice as outlines in section naming convention.

International and Australian standards for pictograms are integrated.

Redundancy• All signs along the periphery of the site will

be new signs.

• All signs in new buildings will be new signs.

• All signs in refurbished buildings/areas will be new signs with the exception of areas outside of the scope of works.

• Existing signage in buildings not part of stage 1 will remain as is unless instructed otherwise as a separate scope.

6WAYFINDING & SIGNAGEPRINCIPLES

Signage CategoriesThe project will require the following types of wayfinding aids and signage to be included (principal signs only are listed):

Exterior

a) Site identification markers

b) Traffic and parking signage

c) Directional signage and directories, including maps

d) Electronic signage for traffic management and for directories, subject to consultation, integration, functionality and budget

e) Building entry identification

f) Carpark identification and direction

Interior

a) Level directories

b) Lift directories

c) Directional signs

d) Reception identifications and directories

e) Room identifications

f) Identification of stairs, lifts and toilets

g) Department identifications

h) Staff station identifications

i) Bed identifications

j) Storage cupboard identification (non-statutory)

k) Statutory signage

l) Operational signage

Signage LocationsPhysical surroundings are important factors in deciding on location of signs.

Signs are easily noticed and are not obscured by architectural, service or lighting elements.

Signs suit the logical patterns of circulation and the need to be readily visible to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic, externally and internally.

Signs are as close as possible to the point where the message is to be conveyed.

Location has to be cognizant of sufficient distance and time between the sign and the decision point in order for the user to recognize and absorb information to make an informed decision.

Signage QuantitiesProliferation of signage is to be avoided.

Over-signing can be distracting and will defeat the purpose of providing clear and accessible information.

Sign Messages• Messages will be kept simple, short and unambiguous.

• Messages will be written in the English language.

• Internationally accepted and tested pictograms will be used.

• Use of positive rather than negative terminology is best practice.

Naming & MessagesCertain phrases may be ambiguous and may be subject to personal interpretation, hence criteria must be established to reduce confusion and misinterpretation.

Text is to be composed with the following criteria in mind:

1. Consistency.

2. Short as possible in order to read quickly.

3. Mean the same thing to all viewers.

4. Stated positively.

5. No acronyms/abbreviations where possible.

7WAYFINDING & SIGNAGEERGONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS

ErgonomicsErgonomics is the study of designing equipment and devices that fit the human body, its movements, and its cognitive abilities.

Ergonomics (or human factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.

Ergonomics is employed to fulfill the two goals of health and productivity.

When an environment is visually controlled by intuitive design and by applying a legible layer (signage), the viewers awareness is significantly improved. Apart from cultural and learned experience each viewers perception and response to wayfinding signs are conditioned by certain physical and psychological characteristics, referred to as human factors.

Physical FactorsNormal field of vision (also cone of vision) covers an angle of about 60 degrees. This is 30 degrees from a vertical or a horizontal centre line (30 degrees either side). However this angle is reduced for viewers from within a moving vehicle.

Visual Acuity

Viewers differ considerably in their ability to see clearly.

Reading Rate

The reading rate is significantly improved when information is logically and clearly structured with a minimum of graphic elements.

Legibility (viewing distances)

AS 1428.2

– 20mm letter from 6 metres

– 40mm letter form 12 metres

– 80mm letter from 25 metres

– 150mm letter from 50 metres

Eye Level

For a person standing that is about 1.7 metres.

For a person sitting that is 1.3 metres.

For a person sitting in a car that is about 1.4 metres.

This data is important for defining the height above ground for text on signs and the placement of signs above ground.

Factors Affecting Perception

Environmental factors affect the viewers perception of a sign. These are the quality, intensity and colour of ambient light falling on the sign; the physical obstructions of sight lines between the viewer and the sign and the visual environment behind and around a sign.

While not all of these factors can be controlled, signs must be placed to enhance sight lines.

Symbols

The majority of people are verbally oriented, absorbing most information through words, while the minority respond to visual devices, such as symbols.

This indicates that typical sign systems require verbal messages. Facilities such as airports often use symbols to reinforce the verbal message or act as a stand alone message. Symbols must be of international standards.

Psychological FactorsFigure-Ground Relationship

How shapes or patterns are perceived against a background. Anything which affects a clear perception of the contours may affect recognition of the object.

In learning to read we mentally organise letters into words, learning to distinguish an entire word by its shape. Hence the use of sentence case in this project, where the first letter is upper case and the following letters are lower case.

Luminance contrast between graphics and sign background are to be 30%.

Implications of Colour

Individuals vary considerably in their ability to distinguish and remember colours. Probably the maximum of six colours – not including white and black- can be distinguished, identified and remembered by viewers, these are red, yellow, blue, green, orange and brown. However red and green are difficult to distinguish by viewers with colour blindness.

Wayfinding Journey Sequence

Arrival - Orientation & information – Circulation and reaffirmation of information – Arriving at destination – Return.

Messages

In accordance with ‘progressive disclosure’, from the macro to the micro level. e.g. Main entry – Building 2 – Level 3 – Reception

Naming Convention

Each destination requires an identity (name) in order to be referenced in spoken language, signage and mapping.

Appearance of Signs

Typeface to be in sentence case for typical messages and identification of destination and places. Sentence case allows for quicker scanning of words while allowing for a larger capheight to extend viewing distances. Signface in matt finish to reduce glare from light sources.

Composition of Messages & Arrows

Avoid arrows for each destination. Destinations are to be grouped below an arrow for each direction.

Order of Destinations

List of destinations in accordance with distance from sign: Destination closest to sign is at top. Destination furthest from sign is listed last.

Existing sign in a typical hospital Proposed sign principles

Order of destinations in accordance with distance relative to the sign.

12NAMING CONVENTIONEXAMPLE 2

ST GEORGE HOSPITAL – FEASABILITY DEVELOPMENT, SCHEMATIC DEVELOPMENT AND MASTERPLAN

42

NOMENCLATURENo acronyms/abbreviations are to be used eg. NICU, SCN. Only the full name of a department is to be listed.

Naming of destinations is to be simple, short, unambiguous and in the English language.

Names are to feature relevant words only, therefore names fit on one line on signs and don’t create entire sentences. Names are aimed at visitors so that for example “Fetal Medicine” is preferred over ”Fetal Medicine Unit”, as the word “Unit” does not provide relevant additional value to the visitor.

The more words are used to create a destination name, the more space it uses on signs, the more words need to be remembered by the visitor, the longer it takes to recognise, ‘scan’, differentiate, read, understand and finally make a decision.

Each destination requires a unique name in order to be referenced in spoken language, signage and mapping. This includes naming of carparks.Building and level naming require differentiation.
