![Page 6: Project on road accident](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022013003/558b9cead8b42a3b188b4731/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Road accidents caused by three main factors:
1. Human Factors (Road Users) The statistics show that 92% of road accident has been
caused by road users who infringed the traffic law, for instance driving faster than limited speed, driving carelessly, getting drunk during driving etc.
2. Road Defect One part of road accident has been caused by road/bridge
infrastructure, which is not yet in the appropriate safety to standard, for examples potholes in the road.
3. Vehicle Defect Vehicles have caused road accident because their
owners did not properly maintain and regularly inspect the vehicle during the operation. So the road accident occurred when brake failure, tire blowout, power steering failure, headlight failure.
![Page 7: Project on road accident](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022013003/558b9cead8b42a3b188b4731/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Driver impairment
Alcohol Relative risk of an accident based on blood alcohol levels. In Canada 33.8% of motor vehicle Deaths were associated with
alcohol use. Physical impairment Poor eyesight and/or physical impairment, with many jurisdictions
setting simple sight tests and/or requiring appropriate vehicle modifications before being allowed to drive;
Old age Old age, with some jurisdictions requiring driver retesting for reaction
speed and eyesight after a certain age; Sleep deprivation Fatigue; Drug use Including some prescription drugs, over the counter drugs (notably
antihistamines, opioids and muscarinic antagonists), and illegal drugs
![Page 8: Project on road accident](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022013003/558b9cead8b42a3b188b4731/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
How to prevent Road Accidents
Heavy Penalty should be imposed on all those who cross speed limits.
Tamper proof speed controllers should be made mandatory for all heavy vehicles.
Two wheeler manufacturers should be asked to design two wheelers with a designed maximum speed of (say) 50/60 kmph.
Diving tests for issue of Driving license is to be made more stringent and foolproof.
Raising of lower age limit for two wheeler and Heavy Vehicle license to 21.
Helmet should be made compulsory. All those who do not maintain the safe distance for
the speed should be punished.

“Health of the Nation is more important than the wealth of the Nation”
Road safety is a major public health concern. Indian road network is second longest in the world
covering more than 3 million Kilometers. 80% of road length consists of village and other roads
and 12% constitutes major districts roads. 85% of passenger loads and 70% of freight load is
carried by road. As per 2004 data there were 72.7 million vehicles on
roads and vehicle fleets are doubling after every 6 to 7 years.
Financial outlay for road transport sector during 10th plan i.e. 2002-2007 was 9416.90 crores.

What is important to understand, in all this, is that this accident and its aftermath are not simply an isolated instance - not in Raigarh, nor elsewhere in India and definitely not across the 'developing' world. The faces of the villains, victims and audiences are the only things that change.
![Page 23: Project on road accident](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022013003/558b9cead8b42a3b188b4731/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
