Project Title: Designing of Intermediate Stock Pile area with Tunnel

Problem Definition: Cross section of a tunnel is to be designed and analyzed inStaad Pro V8i.

    Methodology:

A plot plan of tunnel is given to work with. Since tunnel is underground, vertical as well aslateral earth pressure is acting on the cross section of tunnel along with many other loads. Alltypes of loads are to be calculated manually or in spread sheet. Types of soil lying on top of thetunnel are to be considered to calculate the amount of earth pressure acting on tunnel. Sincesoil is filled back after construction of the tunnel, it will be considered as back fill soil and theload will be applied accordingly. Effects due to Ground water table and normal grade level(NGL) will also be considered,

    Data to be calculated:

Allowable and safe bearing capacity of soil above the tunnel, Locations of bore holes, upliftcheck for ground water tables, and Different types of loads such as dead load, live load, earthpressure load, stock pile load, equipment load, super structure load and material load are to becalculated and applied. Depth of the tunnel is varying along its length. In the starting, the depthof the tunnel is 8.75m, then it reduces to 7.74m and it further reduces to 4m in the end.Vertical and lateral earth pressure will change accordingly.

For converting vertical earth pressure into lateral earth pressure, it will be multiplied with aconstant of 0.5. The unit weight of backfill soil is considered as 20KN/m3 and coefficient ofearth pressure at rest is considered as 0.5 as per DBR for civil works. However the backfilling tobe done after construction of top slab of the tunnel and continuous dewatering to be done tillbackfill is completed.

    Load combinations

As per DBR, the following load combination are considered in design

    DL+LL+ML+EQL+SSL+SPL+EP DL+SSL+EP DL+EP 0.9DL (in case of uplift check)

    Expected outcome:

All the applicable loads will be calculated and applied accordingly to the cross section model in

Staad pro. The cross section will be designed and analyzed in Staad pro. Since the depth of thetunnel is varying with respect to the length, three different designs, each having different depthwill be designed and analyzed separately. After analyzing the tunnel under different loads, asuitable design will be presented to the client to be constructed.
