Work-Personality and Job Performance A Doctoral Research Project Project Overview The aim of this research project is to identify personality traits that are highly predictive of job performance, to enable the development of a personality questionnaire of great practical use in business. Historically, personality traits have shown only low to moderate results in the ability to predict job performance. Utilizing other-raters to measure personality traits, rather than the traditional self-rating method, provides an opportunity to avoid self-distortion bias (e.g. faking) and often results in better prediction of job performance. Also, it is expected that better prediction of job performance will be found when measuring specific rather than broad traits of personality. Furthermore, many personality measures are based on a model that is now 30 years out of date; this research project is based on an entirely new model that emerged out of personality research at the Manchester Business School in 2012. Employees will be invited to rate each other’s personality traits through the use of an anonymous, on-line questionnaire; this will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Two employees (“raters”) each will be asked to rate another employee (“target”) and the scores will be combined. A supervisor will be asked to rate the job performance of the target, which should take approximately 10 minutes to complete online. A minimum of 50 targets from your organization are needed to participate in this study. There is no maximum limit; the questionnaire is scalable to a very large audience, and your organization may find the reports to be extremely beneficial. Data analysis will utilize state of the art techniques. It is expected that the results of this study will show some of the strongest predictive validities available in published research today, providing a foundation for the development of a new model of Work-Personality. Employees can be assured that confidentiality will be maintained throughout the entire process, including secure data storage by the research team. Benefits of Participation If your organization is interested in the results of the research project, reports can be produced, which maintain confidentiality and anonymity of the raters, yet provide useful information about the personality traits and job performance of those who participate in the study. Equivalent reports from a consulting firm have a commercial value of approximately £40 per personal report. You can receive these reports free of charge in return for your participation in this project. Research Team The research will be conducted by Courtney Owens, under the supervision of two professors from the Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, located at Booth Street West, Manchester, UK, M15 6PB.
