Project Portfolio

Following are details related to key projects in which I was involved as project manager or writer; often I was responsible for both, including functional and instructional writing.

SAFEWAY - EATING RIGHT SITEProject Manager

Safeway (Dominick’s in the Midwest) wished to create two new brand sites: Eating-Right.com and O-Organics.com. I worked with a traditional marketing agency for the creative and design, and a

separate agency who developed the full product database and handled the Flash programming.

A custom Eating Right product catalog was created for the Eating-Right.com site. This included more than 250 products, including product photography and descriptive copy, plus the ability to

display the nutritional label of each product and to sort the products by various criteria.

Primary goals for the project were defined as follows:

Engage target consumers with the Eating Right brand and educate consumers on the brand offerings.

Provide a functional and emotional experience to build the Eating Right brand and drive traffic to retail shelves.

Provide a destination site for consumers to learn more about health, nutrition, and key dietary attributes, that will be used on all other outlets.

DEVRY INTERVIEW PRESENTATION Project Manager

Students contemplating enrolling at DeVry are asked to participate in a recruitment interview, in which they meet with an admissions advisor

to discuss their educational needs and goals, with the aim of choosing the program that is right for them.

Accompanying this interview is an extensive computer-based presentation designed to help

a prospective DeVry student make this important decision.

The presentation acts as the outline for the interview, providing ‘speaker-support’ for the advisor and guiding the content flow.

The use of animated Flash sequences and video and Flash demos during the presentation allows the tempo of the presentation to vary.

The presentation is thoroughly updated and redesigned every year or two to reflect DeVry’s

current marketing design look and feel.

REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

SITE REDESIGN, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS AND SECTION 508 COMPLIANCE

Project Manager and Storyboard Writer

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) web site redesign effort included home page redesign, new site navigation and the addition of an International visitor section, including translations into three additional languages. In addition, RIC requested the creation of a web-based training content

management tool, to be created in conjunction with another streaming audio training initiative. I wrote and developed the tools and managed the creation of the new web site.

More examples of my RIC efforts are on the following page.

DISTANCE LEARNING ADMINISTRATIONThe Distance Learning Administration tool was created so RIC staff could view, report, and revise testing and evaluation data. Create and Modify functions allow RIC staff to create and edit test questions for a selected course.

The on-screen instructional text is written to allow users of the tool to begin working with a minimum of assistance.

The Preview feature shows test questions and answers as they will appear in RIC’s live test environment.

ACCESSIBILITY FOR DISABLED USERSIn addition, the redesigned ric.org web site was built to comply with Federal "Section 508" and W3 Consortium accessibility guidelines.

To ensure these standards were met, the site was tested using Bobby software before being uploaded to the live server. All pages on the site were optimized for accessibility by disabled users.

All images, photos or graphic elements contain ALT tags so text reading software can describe

them. All forms appearing on the site have Label tags so they can be read by text reader software.

JOB POSTINGS ADMINISTRATIONThe Job Postings Administrative Tool allows RIC staff to easily update the “Career Corner” section of the ric.org site, including adding, editing and archiving job listings. The approach allowed RIC to add, edit or delete any new or existing information from a password-protected, web-based interface.

RIC COMPETENCY TEST ADMINISTRATION The Center for Clinical Excellence (CCE) of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) wanted to implement online competency testing for employees across the RIC network. The goal was to allow RIC staff to use computers to review learning materials and then take a test that would be scored automatically, with a certificate generated for passing scores; all from a secure, password-protected web environment.

This administrative tool gave RIC the ability to create the tests and test questions in an easy-to-use online format, as well as assign tests to employees based on pre-defined criteria.

The Competency Testing Administration tool allows a testing administrator to create new tests, view an existing test, revise an existing test, and archive a test or question that is no longer in use.

INFORUM 2007 WEB SITEProject Manager

The Inforum 2007 annual meeting required an accompanying web site, where guests could view upcoming events, news and registration information. The site included functionality, created by an outside vendor, that allowed attendees to view sessions

and speaker schedules, and to create and print a personal itinerary for all three days of the meeting.

The web team worked closely with the meeting team, including a producer, writer and strategist, to launch the site in conjunction with a scheduled email blast.

AIRCELL, DELTA AIRLINES, VIRGIN AIRLINES

Aircell’s Gogo Inflight Internet Portal Sites

Project Manager

Aircell created the technology behind its Gogo Inflight Internet service, which was launched on American Airlines, Virgin Airlines, and Delta in 2008. Working with Aircell and its marketing agency, Upshot, we designed the look of the customer registration, support and instructional areas of the portal sites. In addition, we

created a reference book with wireframes for all pages of the site for the benefit of the backend programmers offshore.

MCDONALD’S GLOBAL CASTING CALL WEB SITE

Copywriter

To accompany its “I’m Lovin’ It” campaign, McDonald’s put the call out all over the world, asking folks to send them their photos and personal stories about what they love most, with a chance to be featured on McDonald’s packaging. Along with the marketing copywriting, I added instructions throughout to ensure the registration

and submission process was clear and easy to use. McDonald’s received over 10,000 entries in the first month.

DEVRY BRAND GUIDELINES SITE

Project Manager and Storyboard Writer

DeVry had invested in a first-generation Brand Guidelines web site that had been in place for about 5 years. There had been ongoing updates to the site during this time, but DeVry was looking to greatly improve the usability of the site by improving

its navigation and organization, and expanding the content to all DeVry brands.

The site became a “Brand Identity” site, designed to address the needs of all of the brands that are a part of DeVry: DeVry Corporate, DeVry University, Keller Graduate School, Becker,

Stalla, Chamberlain School of Nursing and Ross University. Key to the success of the solution was improving upon the existing web site by implementing a consistency of organization and experience.

The redesigned Brand Guidelines web site provides easy

access to the various materials available for download, along with the information guiding the user through the proper use of the available materials. The Brand Guidelines web site offers necessary information within a structured, user-friendly interface that will enhance the process of downloading DeVry’s

logos and other template materials.

SHURE PSM 600 PERSONAL MONITOR SYSTEM

In-store Audio Demo

Project Manager and Music Producer

This was my first major project, and probably still the one

I remember most. SHURE was introducing a new in-ear monitoring system for use by musicians in live performance situations. This technology is now seen frequently on nearly every stage, and is used by countless major recording artists. (It’s the now-

ubiquitious wireless receiver they all wear clipped behind their back.)

As the product was first being launched, SHURE needed a way to demonstrate, in national music retailers such as

Guitar Center, all of the PSM’s features and how to operate it in a live performance. However, not all music retailers would have the ability to present demonstrations using the PSM itself. The solution was to create a demo CD and make it available at a headphone station, with

live music tracks and voice-over that led the listener through a tour of the features, and simulating the mixing capabilities of the PSM.

Because this demo would be heard by knowledgeable,

professional musicians of all types, the music we produced was to be authentic and original, composed and recorded specially for this demo, with live musicians performing in the styles of rock, soft pop, world/blues and jazz. We brought in a separate “band” for each of

the music tracks, including the VO background track, one for each of the styles. After the music was recorded, we remixed some tracks to simulate the features, such as panning the sound from the left to right channel, and raising and lowering the sound of specific instruments.

Shure's first entry into personal monitoring, the PSM®600 continues to be recognized as the industry standard for full-featured wired and wireless in-ear systems. Rugged and reliable, they deliver superb sound for all professional broadcast, recording, touring and

installed sound applications.
