Hand in Hand Concept
Hand in Hand is a project organized by the Rotaract Club of University of
Moratuwa in the community service avenue targeting the National Cancer
Hospital, Maharagama with the intention of bettering the lives of cancer
patients, especially small children suffering from cancer.
The key focus areas of this programme would be,
1. Physical Development: Assisting the hospital management to enhance
and develop the facilities offered to patients.
2. “We are there for you!” philosophy: Inculcating the perception among the
patients that they are not alone and that there is help and support at
hand.
3. Public Awareness: Motivating the general public to engage in community
service initiatives and encouraging an attitude of selflessness. Moreover,
increased awareness about cancer will be created as an additional
outcome of the project.
4. Integration and harmonization: Serve as an activity that brings the
membership of the Rotaract community together to unite for a cause.
5. Corporate Social Responsibility: Reaching out for corporates and urging
them to take this issue into consideration and execute social welfare
projects under Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
6. Experience: Serve as an opportunity for the Rotaractors to gain
experience and harness their skills.
The project is to be implemented in line with the Vesak Festival by printing,
promoting and marketing Vesak cards carrying the arts of children suffering
from cancer. The funds collected from the above process will be directed to the
National Cancer Hospital, Maharagama.

Introduction
‘Hand in Hand 2015’ is organized by the Rotaract Club of University of
Moratuwa as a community service project which aims to promote the wellbeing
of cancer patients with focus centered on the National Cancer Hospital in
Maharagama. This initiative was identified and decided upon as a worthy cause,
after witnessing the hardships and the difficulties faced by patients.
‘Hand in Hand’ is expected to contribute to the improvement of the hospital
premises while also giving the patients mental support and hope. The mental
condition of the patients has been identified as a critical factor in the process of
recovering since a person’s thought process tends to take a pessimistic turn
upon diagnosis with cancer. By spending time with the patients, it is expected
that the “We are there for you!” perception would be inculcated. ‘Hand in Hand’
also intends to inspire the patients to pursue their dreams and achieve their
targets.
The transfer of funds collected from the sale of Vesak Cards is expected to form
a financial contribution to the development and expansion of the hospital
premises. Focus is also laid on creating public awareness and the promotion of
community service projects for the betterment of the wider community.

Objectives
Lending a helping hand for the patients of the cancer hospital and making their lives much more comfortable and contented.
Convince the general public to contribute at their level best for the betterment of the lives of cancer patients.
Radically transform the perception in the minds of the general public to engage in charity and work for the betterment of the humankind disregarding all ethnic, religious, cast and class differences.
Giving the members of the Rotaract movement opportunities to showcase their management, leadership and all other soft skills while gaining valuable experiences.
Integration and Harmonization of the Rotaract Movement and strengthening the bond between the Rotaractors.

Necessity
Given the ever-increasing number of people falling prey to cancer,
addressing the issues faced by cancer patients was identified as a
worthy cause. ‘Hand in Hand’ is implemented to achieve the objective
of making their lives more comfortable and contented through the
investment of time and the best efforts.
“Cancer in Sri Lanka is steadily on the rise. The country’s cancer incidence rate has doubled since the
eighties, according to the latest data compiled by the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP).
Statistics indicate that the number of cases and mortality rates from cancer have gone up since 1985. The
cancer incidence rate, the number of new cancer cases detected per 100,000 population standardised to
exclude effects of population growth, has increased from 31.6 percent in 1985 to 67.9 percent by 2005.
The increase in incidence was higher for females at 79 percent in 2006. However, the death rates from
cancer were higher for males at 63.6 compared to 48.7 for females.
Among women, breast cancer was the most prevalent at 27 percent, followed by cervix uteri at 12 percent.
Among men, 42 percent of cancers occurred at lip, oral cavity, pharynx, trachea, bronchus, lungs and
esophagus.
Cancer, which is categorised as a Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) meaning it’s not infectious, is
responsible for nine percent of NCD deaths in Sri Lanka, despite the fact that breast, cervix and oral
cancers are preventable and effectively curable when detected early.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Sri Lanka ranks the highest in NCDs in Southeast
Asia.
Cancer, characterised by cells growing out of control without dying like normal cells, can be divided into
three groups. The first one-third of cancers can be prevented, the next one-third can be successfully treated
if detected early, and for the last one-third, nothing much can be done expect for providing palliative care

Hence, it is evident that it is the need of the hour to open the eyes of
the society to see into the problems faced by cancer patients and raise
the level of public awareness about cancer and its early detection.
And we thoroughly believe that implementation of this programme
would bring about a positive change in the lives of thousands and
thousands of cancer patients who are striving hard for their lives.

Schedule Timeline
Fund raising will be carried out through the sale of Vesak Greeting Cards. Drawings from child patients at the National Cancer Hospital are to be used as designs for the said cards. It is expected that carrying out the programme in line with the Vesak Festival will help communicate the message to a receptive community. Capitalizing on the favourable external atmosphere we would also try to secure the support of external entities to strengthen our distribution channels of the greeting cards. The channels primarily can be categorized as below,
1. Intra university campaign 2. Corporates such as Bookshops, Stationers and companies who
send greetings for Vesak 3. Sales through fellow Rotaract Clubs 4. Governmental Schools 5. Educational Institutes 6. Professional bodies and organisations 7. Religious organizations 8. Personal sales
We also hope to reach out to corporates and well-wishers to raise funds for the project to cover the printing cost of the cards. Month of February -Painting session to get the paintings for the
designs Month of March -Pre planning, finalizing the designs and printing Month of April -Promotion and Sales Month of May -Donation Event and Completion of the Project

1. Sales Revenue: A discriminatory pricing strategy is proposed to
be adopted in order to maximize the sales revenue. Hence some
cards will the priced higher depending on the market segment.
2. Painting Programme: Stationery needed for painting will have
to be made available. Some gifts are also needed to be presented
to the children.
3. Programme to donate funds: An official event will be
organized to officially donate the funds of the project upon its
completion. It is planned to give some complements for the
children as well.
4. Sponsorships and donations: We, as the team would also
expect lavish financial assistances and generous donations from
donors, well-wishers, corporates etc. Sponsorships and
donations will increase the financial value of the donation to the
hospital.

Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa is the first university based Rotaract Club of Sri Lanka. Initiated in 1995 with 16 members, the club has now grown to a membership of over 150 members from all the faculties of the University. The Rotaract Club is made up of undergraduates from all three faculties at University of Moratuwa, namely Faculties of Engineering, IT and Architecture.
Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa, is more than just a community service club. Over the years, the club has widened its scope into areas such as Professional Development, Club Services and International Understanding apart from Community Service. Charted under Rotaract District 3220, the club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Colombo West.
For Rotaract year 2014-2015 the club is led by president Rtr. Ridwan Shariffdeen along with his board of directors under the theme 'Make Dreams Real', making an effort to bring about a positive change for its members and the society at large. The Rotaract Club is one of the most active clubs within the university. One of the key projects of the club is the “Are You Ready?” programme, the Official Career’s week of University of Moratuwa.
The club has won the award for “Rotaract Outstanding Project – South Asia Region” twice for the projects “You Are Not Alone” and “HandZ” in 2000 and 2011 respectively, from the Rotary International. Apart from the international accolades the club continues to win awards and citations at the annual Rotaract District Assemblies. Upholding the motto of Rotaract, “Service Above Self”, the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa continues to initiate numerous projects each year, serving as the ideal platform for the men and women who believe they can make a difference to gather around.
