Background

Millions of years ago it is said that all the lands of our mother earth were joined together, but with the sands of time, the earth evolved, a phenomenon known as the continental drift, divided the lands of our earth into continents, mostly separated by water. Fast forwarding through history, geographical distances were gravely increased as men divided themselves according to color, belief and race. Torn apart by centuries of war and violence, men stand divided. Over the Years, it has not been an anecdote in history, but rather the core, that responsible physicians saved the day. The physicians are the superheroes of all time, starting from Hippocrates, not Batman or Superman nor Spiderman. Medical students are the loyal sidekicks, who are equally contributing in saving the world before bed time. IFMSA is by far the best example as to how medical students are contributing in the saving the world. The members of the Asia-pacific region, gets to meet each other at the MMs and AMs every year, but exclusively during the APRMs. Hundreds of medical students meets at the APRM to obtain valuable medical knowledge, meet new friends, and promote cultural understanding between member nations. This time, the APRM will be held in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The revolutionary city, where blood was shed for the freedom to speak in its mother-tongue, which today marks 21st February, International Mother Language Day. Bangladesh Medical Students' Society will host the APRM 2012 at BRAC-CDM, Savar. This year's theme of the regional meeting will be 'Towards Health Equity.' Bangladesh is a developing country. As a hardworking nation, the country is in the phase where it is on all limbs for development. Due to its ample labor force, Bangladesh is industrializing at a rapid rate. As any other developed country that came out of the darkness of being a developing country, Bangladesh is cladding itself with industrialization. Bangladesh was born in the year of 1971, after a bloody and gruesome nine months of fighting, being decapitated, raped and tortured. The whole nation rebelled and won its own independence. A hardworking and a diligent nation, Bangladeshis have not only proven to be brave and patriotic but a hardworking nation striving to make a better country, a better Bangladesh. Along with the wind of change that brought industrialization, improvement in the health care sector has been ostensible in this region. A delta in category, Bangladesh is poised with a lot of diseases which still exist, due to insufficient improvement in the healthcare system. Due to the population blast since its inception, Bangladesh, suffers from a wide spectrum of diseases such as diarrhea, tuberculosis, leprosy etc. Though ostensible in the healthcare system, control and treatment for infectious diseases has leaped sky high, such as discovery of Oral Rehydration Therapy, other fields such as a universal model for reducing MMR.

The condition, though unwanted, gives a wide spectrum of choice for students to work and enhance their experience and skills on community health, reproductive health, and run researches on combating infectious diseases. A famous Asian philosopher once said “So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.” Come, let us unite and together build a better future for our great nation that is Asia. Illuminate Asia! Mehnaz Rubaiyat Muna

Methodology

Working Committee

Throughout the entire meeting, working committees are provided for each standing committee (SCOPE, SCOPH, SCORA, SCOME, SCORE, SCORP) and the presidents from member countries. Each working committee is a perfect venue for medical students to exchange ideas, engage in discussions, and interact with each other. Each working committee is comprised of medical students from different countries. This will encourage and inspire each member of the committee to learn something from each other and share their country’s health problems, social and economic background, and culture.

Theme

The theme of this Regional Meeting will be Towards Health Equity. The participants will be introduced to the theme through workshops and field work. This will allow participants to gain more awareness and knowledge on the theme and to facilitate interaction among members from different countries. We expect to have qualified speakers from WHO, James P grant School of Public Health, NIPSOM and ICDDR,B for the workshop sessions.

Workshop

The purpose of the workshop in the Regional Meeting is to allow members from each country to learn in depth about the theme. The format of the workshop is different each year. Participants during the workshop will have a chance to learn about the theme via lectures, multimedia presentations and many more. The workshop is a vital part of the Regional Meeting that will help participants in gaining valuable knowledge on the theme.

Field Work

The idea of field work is to provide hands-on experience for participants to know more about the theme. Also, it is an effective way to let participants to see the issues related to the theme. Field work allows participants to actively take part in activities that enables them to gain valuable experiences to share and take back to their own country.

Poster Competition

This is the first time we are planning to introduce poster competition in the Regional Meeting. The idea is to spread the in depth knowledge on the theme in a very competitive manner as a way of exchanging views among the participants.

Qualifications

International Federation of Medical Students’

Associations (IFMSA)

The International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) is a non governmental organization representing associations of medical students. It was founded in May 1951, and currently maintains 102 National Member Organizations from 95 countries across six continents. Our members represent around 1.2 million medical students worldwide. Mission

"Our mission is to offer future physicians a comprehensive introduction to global health issues. Through our programming and opportunities, we develop culturally sensitive students of medicine, intent on influencing the trans-national inequalities that shape the health of our planet." Objectives

The goal of the Federation is to serve society and medical students all over the world through its member organizations by:

Empowering medical students in using their knowledge and capacities for the benefit of society.

Providing a forum for medical students throughout the world to discuss topics related to individual and community health, education and science and to formulate policies from such discussions.

Promoting and facilitating professional and scientific exchanges as well as projects and extracurricular trainings for medical students, thereby sensitizing them to other cultures and societies and their health problems.

Providing a link between members, medical students' associations and international organizations, and to encourage co-operation between them for the ultimate benefit of society.

Structure

To be able to work together, IFMSA has created an organizational structure, which facilitates the flow of ideas and enables the development of activities. IFMSA is composed of medical students' associations from 95 different countries, which are the members of IFMSA and are called National Member Organizations (NMO's). All the activities of IFMSA are organized by the NMO's. Each NMO has its own identity. Most NMO's have Local Committees at the medical schools in their country. The Local Committees coordinate and organize IFMSA activities. Through these Local Committees the NMO's are in direct contact with the medical students.

IFMSA is a federation, which respects the autonomy of its members, the NMO's. The NMO's can decide which activities they take part in and what new activities should be developed. The main activities of IFMSA are student exchanges and different projects. Around 10,000 medical students each year participate in international medical student exchanges, both professional and academic (research). IFMSA organizes projects, programs, seminars and workshops on areas of public health, medical education, reproductive health and human rights and peace. The efforts are coordinated in Standing Committees:

Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME) Forum for active discussion for medical students interested in developing medical education. The overall goal is the implementation of an optimal learning environment for all medical students around the world.

Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) Coordinates the international exchange of medical students within hospitals providing opportunities to experience the healthcare system and culture of other countries.

Standing Committee on Research Exchange (SCORE) Allows students interested in medical research the possibility to experience research work in a foreign country.

Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) Emphasizes the importance of public health issues in medical education and the community. The promotion of a healthy lifestyle through the eradication of smoking, improvement in diet and increasing physical activity is one of the goals. Currently there are, amongst others, international projects in India, Romania, Rwanda and Brazil.

Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including HIV/AIDS (SCORA) Aims to raise awareness among medical students about reproductive health including sexual education, gender equity, sexual violence as well as sexually transmitted diseases.

Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP) Committed to promoting human rights and peace. As future health care professionals they work towards empowering and improving the health of refugees and other vulnerable people.

Bangladesh Medical Students’ Society (BMSS)

The medical students of Bangladesh, dreamed of a nation free of sickness. We realize that we can do more for people. But there was always a lack of networking among the medical students of Bangladesh. Through formal organization, we can be networked and benefit not only our communities but also ourselves. It is for this reason that we establish the Bangladesh Medical Students’ Society. The Bangladesh Medical Students’ Society is dedicated to the improvement of health care and health care delivery system as well as medical education, so that health care may become more personal and holistic in a world of increasing technology and efficiency. We define health as a positive, dynamic state of physical, mental and social well-being, and therefore, believe that health care should be oriented toward the achievement of health and not solely a treatment of disease. As a developing country we believe that access to health care is a right, not a privilege. This implies equal access to equally standards of health care regardless of economic status, political beliefs, cultural background, geographic position, race, creed, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity, physical handicap, mental handicap or institutionalization for criminal, medical or psychiatric reasons. Since resources are limited, they should be allocated so that they equitably promote the public health; and thus to upgrade the integrity of the medical education for the betterment of the country. In all aspects of its function, this society will emphasize integrity, equality, ethics and competence for medical students in the world.

Objectives

Provide an arena for medical students, to convey their voice to all levels of the government and other relevant stakeholders in the medical educational area.

Give medical students a ground to take initiatives for building a better BANGLADESH.

Provide a link between medical students from different medical colleges and international organizations, for cultural exchange and bridging cooperation between them.

The Society will be a platform for medical students to discuss, formulate policies and conduct workshop on community health, global health, education and science.

The Society will play the role of a medium for professional development of medical students, by involving them in international and national training programs.
