I. Summary

Automobile industries, the major contributor to world’s economy has been continually putting efforts to reduce the weight of the automobile thereby reducing fuel emissions. This project is focused on developing a light weight composite material which might replace the currently used high alloy steels by satisfying the customer requirements such as improved fuel efficiency and low exhaust emissions.

Aluminium is among the most environmental friendly metals and most recycled. Its weight is one-third of steel. Also, aluminium alloys offer properties very much similar to that of steel. Aluminium is considered the “material of choice” in almost all industries where weight plays the major factor.

II. Introduction

The current trend of automobile industry is to reduce the weight of the vehicle which improves its fuel efficiency. The main solution to reduce weight is to opt for lightweight materials which has similar properties as that of the existing material used for the same application. The entire weight of the vehicle is the summation of the individual part weights. Gears, an individual part which has a dominant role in the weight of a vehicle, can be made of a light weight composite material instead of high alloy steel which has properties that of high strength , corrosion resistance and good torque transmission.

III. Needs/Problems

Gears form an integral part of an automobile. Gears are being made of alloy steels but the major drawback in using them in gears are:

Its weight that reduces the efficiency of the automobile Increased pollution Decreases the life of other subsystems such as suspension system due to

increased load acting on the system.

IV. Goals/ObjectivesThe objective of the project is to develop a light weight composite material in replacement toalloy steels used in the manufacture of gears which has similar properties as that ofalloy steels.

V. Scope of WorkThe gears manufactured using light weight composites with required properties can replace the gears made of high alloy steels in many applications such as motorcycles, cars, agro-farm based equipments and machine tools.

VI. TimetableThe project has been divided into two phases as shown below in the table with the time periods.

Description of Work Start and End Dates

Phase One Case study and Designing 15-06-2015 to 08-10-2015

Phase Two Fabrication and testing30-11-2015 to 25-04-2016
