ALE COMPLETES WORK ON AUSTRALIA PACIFIC LNG PROJECTALE has completed the transportation, load-out, and load-in operations for Bechtel in Indonesia and Australia, as part of the construction of the Australia Pacific LNG project.

ALE was contracted by Bechtel Inc. in August 2011 to carry out the site transportations and load-outs of 69 modules at the S.M.O.E. yard in Batam, Indonesia, and at the LNG Facility on Curtis Island in Gladstone, QLD Australia.

The 69 modules ranged in weight from 100t to 3,363t. There was a total of 665 site-moves of various cargo, including the load-in of project components from ships at the neighbouring Kabil Port. ALE then performed the load-out of the modules onto barges. For the load-out of module 101DA, which was the heaviest module weighing 3,363t, ALE utilised the maximum configuration of 168 axle lines of SPMT and six power packs.

Mike Ward, Contracts Manager for ALE who oversaw this project, said: “Our priority for this project was to optimise the most time efficient and effective transportation configuration.

“During the load-out operations of module 110RD, weighing 235t, we were faced with significant sea swells at the on-site wharf. Despite the challenging load-out conditions, our in-house operations and engineering teams were able to provide a wealth of experience which meant the load-out was executed in a timely and safe manner, marking a very important milestone for Bechtel and the owner, Australia Pacific LNG.”

A total of 29 sea voyages completed delivery to the Australia Pacific LNG Facility Site at Curtis Island, Queensland, Australia where all 69 modules were successfully received, loaded-in and placed in their final operational location by ALE’s Australian branch.

ALE INVESTS IN NEW YARD IN INDONESIA ALE has set up PT ALE HEAVYLIFT INDONESIA and moved to a new yard at Citranusa Kabil Port, in Batam. At 1,000m², the yard is a dedicated PT ALE HEAVYLIFT INDONESIA area has a greater capacity to service clients.

“Over the last few months we have invested heavily in our people and equipment to ensure we have the most effective and highest quality team and resources for our clients,” says Regional Director Mark Foreman. “Our move to a new, larger yard in Batam illustrates our dedication to our local market and growth throughout Indonesia”.

ALE PERFORM 40M JACK-UP AND SKIDDING OPERATIONS FOR MALIKAI PROJECT

ALE has jacked-up the Malikai Topside 40m high, before skidding the Topside a distance of 90m whilst at this elevation - making these the world’s highest jack-up and skidding operations performed on this scale. These operations were carried out whilst executing the Malikai EPC TLP Project at Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) West in Johor Darul Takzim, Malaysia.

The global heavylift specialists were awarded the contracts for the Malikai Project on behalf of TMJV. ALE was given the scope of weighing and transporting four unit Hull blocks, Living Quarters and mega beams for the ‘Superlift’ activities. In addition, ALE was also awarded with the weighing of the Topside, skidding of the Topside, jacking-up of the Topside, skidding at height of the Topside over the Hull and mating of Topside and Hull.

ALE started to mobilise the equipment at the beginning of April and started setting up the equipment needed for the Superlift (including its further-developed computer-controlled skidding system, ALE mast system, Mega Jack system, weighing cells, strand jacks) in May. The Superlift was then executed in July.

The Topside weighed in at 13,800t and was skidded 90m onto ALE’s Mega Jack system. The Mega Jack jacked-up the Topside to a height of 40m - the world’s highest ever jack-up on this scale. When jacked-up the Topside weighed a combined total of 17,300t. The Topside was then skidded a distance of 90m at elevation, until it was above the Hull. ALE then mated the Topside with the Hull.

ALE was also contracted to remove all equipment using ALE’s 900t strand jacks (pre-installed onto the Main deck of the Topside), skidding equipment and SPMTs.

ALE’s Project Manager Edwin Blösser, from ALE’s Netherlands branch who coordinated the Superlift activities, commented: “It is fantastic to be part of a world first. At ALE we are always willing to push the boundaries in order to offer a bespoke solution for the client. In order to achieve such an operation, our engineers and crew have worked hard to carry out the necessary studies and safety checks.

“This Superlift would not have been possible without a great crew and the Mega Jack System. With its capacity to easily lift the Topside to the desired height, the Mega Jack enabled the client to work on both the Topside and the Hull on ground level, therefore optimising the logistics needed for such a build. As both the Mega Jack and skidding systems are operated remotely via a control room and are equipped with computerised controls, which have numerous safety systems implemented, these provided a safe way of working and protected both workers and the client’s equipment being lifted. Because the equipment is easy to mobilise and handle, ALE was able to install within the deadline set by the client and despite the challenges ALE faced on-site, the Superlift was completed without any delay to the project.”

The final stage of the project will involve the load-out of the Tension Leg Platform (TLP), which is expected to take place in 2016.

ALE COMPLETES SK316 PROJECTALE has completed the SK316 Development Project in Johor Darul Takzim, Malaysia in May.

ALE started working on the project in January and were contracted by Technip-MMHE joint venture on behalf of PETRONAS to perform the weighing and load-out of the WHP jacket, topside and bridge and also supply the mooring winches for the load-out of the WHP jacket, topside, bridge and CPP jacket.

ALE’s Junior Project Manager Mohd Syafiq Suziliman, said: “It was good to be involved in a major project like this. During the roll-up operation, we utilised the strand jacks

as a holdback mechanism – the first time this method has been implemented in the shipyard. Through team work and applying innovative techniques, we were able to meet our client’s expectations and complete the project safely and on schedule.”

The Technip-MMHE joint venture was awarded with the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning contract for the development of two gas fields in Block SK316. Block SK316 is located approximately 180km North of Bintulu in Sarawak, Malaysia, and involves a central processing platform (CPP) and a bridge-linked wellhead platform.

WEIGHING AND LOAD-OUT OF 1,832.5T MODULE FOR ICHTHYS ONSHORE LNG FACILITIES PROJECT, THAILANDOVERVIEW: ALE has completed the weighing and load-out of the A3EG, the biggest module for the Ichthys Onshore LNG Facilities Project based at the CUEL Laem Chabang fabrication yard, Thailand.

SERVICES REQUIRED: The A3EG module weighed 1,832.5t and measured 27m wide x 50.6m long x 23.5m high. The module was transported using 120 axle lines of SPMT in five configurations of 2 file 24 and utilising 5 spacers.

As the module was so large, ALE faced the challenge of manoeuvring the module on site as the dimensions left limited clearance between the operations building on route from the module assembly yard to the load-out jetty.

The successful load-out of the A3EG module marked an important milestone in the project.

ALE COMPLETE FINAL LOAD-OUT FOR ICHTHYS PROJECT IN THAILANDALE has completed the final module load-out for the Ichthys Project Onshore LNG Facilities in Thailand in January 2016.

ALE’s Thailand branch were contracted by CUEL Limited to perform the load-out, site move, and weighing of 151 modules comprising of inter-connect piperacks, jetty piperacks and slug catcher area and pig receiver PAU’s.

The modules varied in weight from 24t to 1,928t and ALE utilised a maximum trailer arrangement of 120 axle lines and five power pack units throughout the operations.

The contract was completed on the 14th January, coinciding with the 30th sea voyage from CUEL’s construction yard at Laem Chabang Port, Thailand, to Bladin Point in Darwin, Australia.

ALE was also proud to have received an award from CUEL Limited for World Class Safety Performance, as the team achieved 732 consecutive days without a loss time injury during the project.

ALE’s Engineering Manager, Worrasak Noenpa, who managed the project and ALE’s scope in Thailand explains the challenges faced by the team: “ALE were required to complete

the complex module loadout engineering design in collaboration with CUEL and the main contractor. Whilst it was challenging, we made sure all risks were mitigated and we found that the adjacent sea wall offered protection from wind and sea swells, ensuring relatively risk-free load-outs.

“I’m really proud of the Thailand team’s hard work throughout this long-term project and this is the evident reflected in the quality of the operations. This is a testament to ALE’s training regime, making the receipt of CUEL’s prestigious safety award even more rewarding.”
