UNIVERSITY OF WALES, NEWPORTCITY CENTRE CAMPUS

• RIBA Award 2011• Project Managed by Mott MacDonald• Designed by BDP Architects• Constructed by Willmott Dixon• All furniture supplied by Momentum

Universities are facing unique challenges in the 21st century. It is imperative that the facilities offered to students match their expectations and aspirations, affording them the quality of space that they now seek from their prospective place of study.

The University of Wales, Newport required that the function of the space and the budget be clearly met whilst enhancing the “student experience”. These were specific ambitions for the project and Momentum worked with the customer to ensure that those objectives were achieved, providing ideas for furniture that were not standard education products and allowing the spaces to closely resemble the best facilities in offices and industry.

The Interior shows furniture from some of the top European designer manufacturers, but on every occasion Momentum operated within the budget parameters to create the desired function. We think that our ideas and portfolio allow us to provide the best possible interiors for educational establishments, from seminar rooms to auditoria, from cafeterias to offices; these are facilities for the 21st century fee-paying student to enjoy.

Project: The Green RoomThe Green Room with its focus on string instruments will be a focal point for music lovers, drawing in customers of all ages from many different paths of life. Taking advantage of its prime location opposite the millennium centre in Cardiff bay and surrounded by cities such as Bristol, Newport, and Swansea all rich in musical history. The aim is to bring classical music into the 21st century, showcasing talent using string instruments with both the classical style and modern twist. My project address’s two agenda’s - • Breaking down the supposed hierarchy in classical music• Creating an intimate and personable space lost in the ‘redevelopment’ of the Cardiff Bay

Project: MagpieMagpie is a City Fit project which picks a city building and builds a brief around a specific target market. It was presented through two feasibility documents and an electronic presentation.“My building will be a hub for jewellery lovers more open minded than the ‘norm’. It will also incorporate a piercing parlour and a social area for the like-minded in house, linked but on different floors. It will be tailored to people with an above average love for silver; from simple adornment to piercings in the extreme.

The Jewellery will be handmade with the piercer and the jeweller ever present.
