Project Zone A consumer perspective - by Diana AspinallNine consumers and local volunteers from the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury areas have joined the Nepean Redevelopment Consumer Committee. Consumer input is essential throughout the different redevelopment phases to ensure the new facilities meet the needs of our various communities.

As one of these members, I am honoured to have been invited to contribute to the planning of the different sections of Stage 1 of the Nepean Redevelopment.

Our consumer committee working group meets monthly to receive updates from the project team and to allow us to provide a consumer’s perspective on the different processes being done as part of the redevelopment. The consumer members are also able to share their consumer experiences in relation to the redevelopment planning processes and identify opportunities for changes to be explored.

Our consumers represent multiple age groups, multicultural, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, aged care and disability needs, carers and parents with young children. And, we all belong to larger groups and organisations (such as Rotary or Mother’s groups) who live and work in the area that Nepean Hospital services.

The QuarterStage 1 of the Nepean Redevelopment plays an important role in Penrith City Council’s vision to become one of Australia’s premier destinations for health, education, medical research and related industry over the next ten years. Building a facility that can attract and retain leading health professionals is a key long term goal for the project team and NBMLHD. The Quarter intitiative was launched on Monday 23 October.

A project wall has been installed on the

glass wall in South Block that separates

the staff cafeteria with the public corridor

and all the latest project information is

displayed here. We encourage everyone

to visit the project wall regularly to get the

latest project updates.

As individual members on the committee, we have the capacity to use these networks to share information about the redevelopment and represent the broader community needs.

The committee strives for two way communication and feedback from the working group meetings is incorporated into the planning and design process.

The consumer committee will continue to operate through the planning, design and construction phases to ensure the consumer perspective is always considered.

Some of our consumer Committee members (L to R) Paul Isaac, Belinda Berryman, Marie Hurley, Lachlan Morris (back), Kevin Finlayson (front), Patti Shanks, Lily Muriel, Joe Rzepecki, Julie Russell, Amanda Anicic and Diana Aspinall.

Introducing LilyLily Muriel - Nepean Redevelopment Consumer Committee Member

What’s your story Lily? I was born in a shoe town village named Marikina in the Philippines and moved to Australia in 1976. I married and started a family here soon after and worked as an accountant and auditor for several years until I became a full-time carer for my mother in 2013.

What is it like being a full time carer? The transition from office worker to carer was a big leap and the enormity of the responsibility is still overwhelming.

My mother, Dakila Muriel*, is wheelchair bound following an accident and I have to sleep in her room for her bathroom needs. A typical day would be preparing meals, helping her shower and other household chores. I am lucky that her only ailment is arthritis so her medical visits are mostly just check-ups every three months.

What has being a carer taught you?Patience and tolerance and a better outlook on life. I am also thankful for those intimiate moments with my mother.

What do you like to do when you have time off? I catch up with friends, go to the movies and generally get out of the house to break the cycle and keep my sanity.

Who is the Nepean Redevelopment team? Our dedicated project team is lead by Health Infrastructure with representation from the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District and Nepean Hospital. A lead design team has also been appointed, tasked with the planning and design of the redevelopment. It has representation CBRE (project managers), BVN Architecture and MBMpl (cost managers).

More informationIf you have any queries relating to the Nepean Redevelopment please email us at:

[email protected]

We will try to respond to your query as soon as possible.

Consumer participationConsumer participation in the redevelopment is extremely important to ensure we build a facility that meets the needs of our patients and visitors.

If you are interested in providing input into this process, please fill in our consumer participation form which is located on our redevelopment page:www.nbmlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/nepean-redevelopment

Why did you join the consumer committee? I am honored to be part of this important project and feel like I will be able to fulfill my civic duty in giving something back to the community that I have been part of. I hope this committee can give the public their own voice and valuable input to make sure their needs and requirements are considered in all aspects of the redevelopment.

*Lily’s mother passed away peacefully on Friday 3 November 2017. The redevelopment team sends our sincere condolences to the Muriel family.
