Your assignment is to redesign the Google interface. Currently, when you go to Google’s main screen and all of its consecutive screens, you are confronted with a clean, stripped-down, verbal-based screen; your challenge is to create one that is more graphical in nature, and reflects the actions in which the user is engaged.

Pay particular attention to the section in the NY Times, article that discusses “special commands,” such as AND OR and NOT. Try to come up with a visual system that allows users to evoke these commands though elements that can be recognized at a glance.

Think about ways in which you and those you know use the Google search engine. Is there a particular feature that you feel could be more user friendly? Is there a target audience for which you would like to design? If so, then please define the audience in your initial sketches.

Your challenge is twofold:

1. Design the search input screen with a submit action that makes sense within the visual system you have created.

2. Design the “results” screen, that presents the user with the results of his search in a meaningful way. Be deliberate about how elements are arranged, and bear in mind that your results presentation must be SCALABLE. This means you must design for searches that return no answers as well as those that re-turn a few answers all the way to those returning hundreds of answers.

In the following Redux I chose to use a metaphor already in place. The magni-fying glass is the universal symbol for searching, used by digital interfaces to represent a search input for that artifact. I used this for the main input graphic, re-enforcing the purpose of Google, to search the web. I also wanted to make it easy for the general user to be able to utilize so of Google’s advanced features without having to go to a seperate screen. I chose the ones I use the most, however the interface could be cofigured for more. (refine search by: specific site, by: phrase/quote, by: excluding words, by: related topics, by: date or dates, and by: file type. Making these six easily available to users to refine their search.

Secondly, we were asked to make it more graphical, stearing away from Google’s text based approach. While I perfer some of this text, in accord with our assign-ment I chose to remove as much text as possible. A note about my design: I left the the other parts of Google just text, focusing on the main input for searching. These include: sign in, gmail, docs, igoogle, settings, and language. Also the advanced search I left text, when clicked this would link you to Google’s regular advanced search page. Hopefully my design would prevent you from needing it. Also the category “MORE” would include the rest of googles categories in a drop down menu i.e. books, shopping,

There is normally a column on the right for sponsored links or they are placed first in the results. For this project I have left them out in order to leave room for notes. Notes are in RED.

When buttons are moused over the text is only displayed for that button. On mouse click the search will initiate (see following page). I will walk you through my search to show how the interactivity works. I’m looking for a news report I think was entitled: the end of print. I saw it on TV but I want to read the whole article. So I first type the end of print in the input box. (okay cur-rently on google and bing you get the instant results with the typing of each letter, we’ll assume this is off for the scope of this project). Entering the text in the input field I then click the search button, which takes me to the results page(see next page).

Google always lets you close a search or search category, I think it works well so I have perserved this feature, plus making it more prominent.

The appropriate category icon is dis-played by its matching results.

Page would extend down in browser allowing for different amounts of results, user could specify in settings how many per page , for sake of print we stick to a 800x600 window.

Not finding what I want I decide to refine the search. Since I know it was on the news we take a shot and try clicking on the news category.(see next page)

Still not finding what I want I decide to refine the search again. Well I know it was just on TV so I decide to refine by DATE represented by a calendar. Clicking on the calendar icon does two things, it first returns the results in order of when they happened, it also highlights an example in the input window, prompting the user to type the date or dates they are interested in, in the highlighted field.

The results are further refined, I have not shown them here for the sake of redundency. It was down 700,000, 000 with a general search, 700,000 with the news category, all the way down to 567 when the search is narrowed to a one month period. Here I find it on the sixth entry.
