Basic information on projection surfaces
![Page 40: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Gain
Gain is a measure of reflection performance. Gain is related to a universal reference standard: Magnesium Carbonate (MgCO3). Rather than absorbing light, MgCO3 reflects projected light back with perfect evenness. Matte White, with a measured gain of 1.0, is the standard brightness for a projection screen surface.
![Page 41: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
Viewing Angle
• The viewing angle of a projection screen fabric indicates the maximum angle at which the projected image is still clearly visible.
![Page 42: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
Gain and Viewing Angle
![Page 43: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
Types of Projection Surfaces
Diffusion• Rather than reflecting the light as a beam, the
diffusion projection screen surface disperses the light evenly and always achieves a gain of close to the norm value of 1.0.
• The projector may be ceiling mounted or placed on a table.
![Page 44: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
Types of Projection Surfaces
Reflective• A reflective projection screen surface reflects the
projected light from a ceiling-mounted projector in a beam in the direction of the viewer. The angle of incidence is the same as the angle of reflection. Because of the beam effect, the viewing angle reduces but the gain increases.
![Page 45: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
Types of Projection Surfaces
Retro-Reflective• A retro-reflective projection screen surface
reflects the projected light from a table supported projector in a beam in the direction of the viewer. The light is reflected back in the direction from which it comes. Because of the beam effect, the viewing angle reduces but the gain increases.
![Page 46: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
Types of Projection Surfaces
Diffusion Transmissive (rear projection)• In the case of a transmissive projection screen
surface, the image is projected from behind the surface and is transmitted by diffusion to the audience side.
• The projector may be either mounted from the ceiling or placed on a table.
![Page 47: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Base Materials
• Tensioned Projection Surfaces
• Non-Tensioned Projection Surfaces (supported)
![Page 48: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
Non-Tensioned Projection Surfaces
• Fiber-glass or another woven substrate can be coated or laminated with the projection surface on one side and a black light absorbing surface on the other.
• The front side is treated with a projection layer and has a light structure.
• The projection surface has black backing.
![Page 49: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
Non-Tensioned Projection Surfaces
• Non-Tensioned screen surfaces need tensioning on top and bottom.
![Page 50: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
Tensioned Projection Surfaces
• Liquid vinyl is sprayed or poured onto a flat sheet substrate and when dry and cured performs as a screen.
• This type of screen requires tension on all four side of the material which provides for a perfectly flat surface.
![Page 51: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)

Projecta Academy
“The ultimate purpose of a projection screen is to ensure that the quality of the projected image is reflected toward the audience while maintaining or even improving the projection in brightness or contrast.”

Why you need a projection screen
• A flat surface for image projection
• A large image size
• A uniform image
![Page 71: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/71.jpg)
A flat surface for image projection
• A projection screen will give a flat and dedicated area for reflecting the projected image toward the audience without effecting the content. This is vital to achieve a focused and detailed projected image.
![Page 72: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/72.jpg)
A large image size
• With projection you can achieve very large sizes for very large audiences, and we produce projection screens to match the impressive capabilities of the most sophisticated projectors.
![Page 73: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/73.jpg)
Uniformity
• An even distribution of light on a projection screen is known as "good uniformity" in projection terminology. Uniformity is essential for an even image with a wide viewing angle in the desired direction.
![Page 74: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/74.jpg)
Gain
• Gain is a measure of reflection performance. Gain is related to a universal reference standard: Magnesium Carbonate (MgCO3). Rather than absorbing light,
• MgCO3 reflects projected light back with perfect evenness. Matte White, with a measured gain of 1.0, is the standard brightness for a projection screen surface.
![Page 75: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/75.jpg)
Viewing Angle
• The viewing angle of a projection screen surface indicates the maximum angle at which the projected image is still clearly visible. The brightness of the image decreases as the viewing angle increases in relation to the axis of the image.
• The maximum viewing angle is the point at which the viewer perceives less than 50% of the luminous intensity of the image. This limit is the commonly accepted standard for image quality.
![Page 76: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/76.jpg)
Contrast
Contrast is the difference between the blackest black and the whitest white in the projected image.
![Page 77: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/77.jpg)

Brightness
Brightness with projection is the amount of light that is reflected by the projection surface.
![Page 79: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/79.jpg)
Projection Screens and Brightness
An ideal screen is referred to as a Unity Gain screen which disperses light evenly and equally in a sperical pattern with the same brightness.
![Page 80: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/80.jpg)
Ambient light
• Ambient light is the amount of unwanted light in a room that can affect the projection in a negative way. Ambient light can come from windows or from room lighting.
![Page 81: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/81.jpg)
Ambient Light and Brightness
Ambient light on a projection screen causes a less bright image. This can be countered by using window blinds to darken the room, using a projector with a stronger light output or using a projection surface with a higher gain.
.
![Page 82: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/82.jpg)
Projector characteristics - output
Output (ANSI-lumen)• The brightness of a projector is measured in
ANSI-Lumen. The higher the number of ANSI-Lumen, the brighter the projected image and the more it can compensate for ambient light. Please note that a too bright image is not pleasant to look at for a longer period of time.
![Page 83: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/83.jpg)
Projector characteristics - Projector position
Projector position• A projector can be placed in front of or behind a
projection screen. The projector can also be mounted on the ceiling or placed at table height. A projection surface has a specifically designed coating that handles the light that hits it, which makes it necessary to pay attention to your choice of projection surface type.
![Page 84: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/84.jpg)
Projector characteristics – lens-type
Lens-type• The lens of a projector determines the throw
distance. If a short throw or ultra short throw lens is used this creates a situation where the projected light reaches the projection surface at an extreme angle, which is why we recommend using a tensioned projection surface to avoid distortion of the image.
![Page 85: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/85.jpg)
Lux
The perceived amount of light that is reflected by the projection screen is expressed in LUX.
Optimum image quality is achieved when the ratio between the LUX value of the projected image and the wall behind it is at least 5:1.
LUX = Projector ANSI Lumen Screen surface area in m2 X gain
![Page 86: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/86.jpg)

Sizing a screen to a room
If you want everyone in the room to see what is on the screen, make sure you use the right size projection screen. This is necessary to ensure everyone can see the detail of the projection.
Always consider the most demanding usage of your projection when determining the size.
![Page 90: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/90.jpg)
High resolution projectors
• The use of high resolution projectors in most applications creates quality images with great detail. This higher resolution also implies smaller font text and images which has its effect on the correct choice of projection screen size.
![Page 91: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/91.jpg)

Sizing a screen to a room
• The InfoComm International standard therefore recommends the following rules to determine the correct size of the projection screen:
![Page 95: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/95.jpg)
16:10 WIDE and 16:9 HDTV aspect ratios
• You can calculate the diagonal of the projection screen that will match your situation by dividing the room depth by two.
![Page 96: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/96.jpg)

4:3 VIDEO aspect ratio
• To calculate the correct dimension for a 4:3 aspect ratio, you can use the following rule. The height of a screen should be 1/6 of the distance from the screen to the last row of viewers.
![Page 98: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/98.jpg)
2.35:1 CINEMASCOPE aspect ratio
• To calculate the correct dimension for a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, you can use the following rule. The height of a screen should be 1/4 of the distance from the screen to the last row of viewers.
![Page 99: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/99.jpg)
You should also consider
Ceiling height• Take the ceiling height into account in your
calculation as this is often a limiting factor.
![Page 100: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/100.jpg)
You should also consider
Comfortable viewing height
The distance between the floor and the viewing area of a projection screen should be:
professional and educational applications
> 125 cm
home entertainment applications
> 60 to 90 cm
![Page 101: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/101.jpg)
You should also consider
Comfortable viewing distance• For professional and educational applications
the first row of seats should be approximately 1.5 screen heights away.
• For home entertainment applications the first row of seats should be approximately 2 screen heights away.
![Page 102: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/102.jpg)
Projection screen vs. flat panel display
Although a flat panel display may seem a good option for a smaller size presentation area, in most cases these are actually too small.
If the rules of thumb are applied often a larger projection screen should be specified to make sure the audience can see the necessary level of detail comfortably.
![Page 103: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/103.jpg)

Black Drop and Borders
Black borders surrounding the projection area on a projection surface increase the perceived contrast of the projected image.
![Page 106: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/106.jpg)
Black Drop and Borders

![Page 107: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/107.jpg)
Calculating the Black Drop
A) Determine the height of the ceiling.
B) Determine the appropriate viewing height. • for professional use: approximately 125 cm.
• for home entertainment use: between 60-90 cm.
C) Subtract the distance between the bottom of the projection screen to the floor from the distance between the ceiling and the
floor to give you the complete height of the projection screen.
D) Subtract the required viewing height from the complete height of the projection screen.
![Page 108: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/108.jpg)
For Example
• Projection Screen:– Elpro Electrol– Width: 240cm– Aspect Ratio: Wide (16:10)– Viewing Area: 144 x 230cm
• Size of the Room:– Ceiling Height: 300cm– Width: 500cm– Depth: 600cm

Front vs. Rear projection
• Front projection– How it works– Materials– Advantages– Disadvantages
• Rear projection– How it works– Materials– Advantages– Disadvantages
![Page 114: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/114.jpg)
Front Projection – how it works
• Front projection is still the most commonly used way of projecting an image.
• The screen reflects the light back to the audience.
• Projector are both located in the audience viewing area.
![Page 115: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/115.jpg)
Front Projection – materials
A front projection screen can be made of:• Fibreglass material• Flexible polyvinyl chloride material
Light is reflected by the projection screen towards the audience.
![Page 116: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/116.jpg)
Front Projection - advantages
• Requires less space than rear projection.
• Generally easier installation than rear projection.
![Page 117: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/117.jpg)
Front Projection - disadvantages
• Lighting: images consist of light from the projector reflected off the screen.
• Projection equipment is often located in the same room as the screen which is a source of noise, glare and distraction.
• People can interfere with the image.
![Page 118: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/118.jpg)
Rear Projection – how it works
• Projected light is transmitted through a fabric or glass on to a diffuse surface on which the image is focussed.
• Projector is on the opposite side of the projection screen form the audience.
• Requires high levels of transmission to achieve brightness.
![Page 119: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/119.jpg)
Rear Projection – how it works
• The light of the projector should be aimed directly at the audience.
• The vertical cone is adjusted by moving the projector.
• Placing the video projector higher and projecting down toward the eyes of the audience provides greater brightness.
![Page 120: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/120.jpg)
Rear Projection - materials
A rear projection screen can be made of:• Flexible polyvinyl chloride material• Plexiglas material
• Light is transmitted through the screen material with relative little bending.
![Page 121: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/121.jpg)
Rear Projection - advantages
• Image quality is superior to front projection.• Less loss of contrast.• With rear projection there is no projector in sight
and all AV components can be concealed in the projection room eliminating fan noise.
• With rear projection the presenter or teacher can walk in front of the screen without affecting the projection.
![Page 122: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/122.jpg)
Rear Projection - disadvantages
• Space is required behind the projection screen.
• A rear projection system is generally more expensive.
![Page 123: Projecta screens 2013](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022103115/5583bd53d8b42a784f8b45e4/html5/thumbnails/123.jpg)
