Todays objective

• Briefed on 3 sustainability performance frameworks relevant to neighbourhood development scenarios

• Work together to explore synergies, interplays, timing etc – high level exploration

Outcomes• Raised awareness• Appreciation of the complementarity of

frameworks/tools

What is Infrastructure Sustainability?

"Infrastructure sustainability" refers to the added value that good design, construction, and operation of any piece of infrastructure brings to it natural, social and economic capital.

Page 6: Projects & Assets Interplay between complimentary Frameworks Creating a nationally consistent approach to project sustainability across the asset lifecycle

AGIC

• Member based, not for profit industry council

• Mission:“to be the principal industry catalyst for advancing sustainability in the design, construction and operation of Australia’s infrastructure”

• More than 80 member organisations, employing 70,000 people.

Page 7: Projects & Assets Interplay between complimentary Frameworks Creating a nationally consistent approach to project sustainability across the asset lifecycle

IS Overview

• First national sustainability rating tool for infrastructure.

• Measures sustainability performance across the triple bottom line (environmental, social and economic)

• Voluntary

Credit Layout

Ref-x Credit TitleAimThe aim of the credit – “To reward…” This describes the guiding principles behind the credit.Criteria

Additional GuidanceAdditional information to help the assessor to determine the appropriate level achieved and the evidence needed to demonstrate that achievement. Note that where the word ‘must’ is used, this refers to a requirement for achievement of a benchmark level, whereas the word ‘should’ is more general guidance.

  Level 1 Level 2 Level 3

Level 1 Level 2 Level 3

Benchmark

Level 1 benchmark – describes the requirements a project or asset needs to meet to achieve Level 1 performance. This is the lowest level of performance that receives any score.

Level 2 benchmark describes the requirements a project or asset needs to meet to achieve Level 2 performance.

Level 3 benchmark describes the requirements a project or asset needs to meet to achieve Level 3 performance. This is the highest level of performance and thus receives the highest score.

Evidence

Level 1 evidence – the suggest evidence that may be used to demonstrate the benchmark performance level has been achieved.

Level 2 evidence Level 3 evidence

The IS Brand

• A project/asset can only refer to its IS rating if it has been formally verified by AGIC

• The IS symbol is a trademark and must be appropriately used

• Assessors have a role to protect and promote the IS brand

Underpinning ethos

• “Compliance” to net gain/restorative outcomes• Integrated considerations and decision making• Systems thinking, process and outcomes based• Flexibility • Convert intangibles to tangibles• First principal risk and opportunity management

Page 18: Projects & Assets Interplay between complimentary Frameworks Creating a nationally consistent approach to project sustainability across the asset lifecycle

IS Benefits

• Common national language for sustainability in infrastructure

• Consistent application and evaluation of sustainability in tendering processes

• Scoping whole-of-life sustainability risks for projects and assets, enabling smarter solutions that reduce risks and costs

• Fosters resource efficiency and waste reduction, reducing costs

• Fosters innovation and continuous improvement• Builds an organisation’s credentials and reputation in its

approach to sustainability in infrastructure

IS Benefits cont.

• Intra – project performance and knowledge management

• Inter – project performance and knowledge management

• Practical and applied connectivity between Corporate – Operations – Projects/Assets

• Project procurement• Asset performance assessment

Page 20: Projects & Assets Interplay between complimentary Frameworks Creating a nationally consistent approach to project sustainability across the asset lifecycle

Where is IS at now?

• Tool trialled & rolled out• 2 rounds of IS training nationally• 4 Projects formerly registered and self

assessment has commenced• 6 plus in short term “pipeline”

Page 21: Projects & Assets Interplay between complimentary Frameworks Creating a nationally consistent approach to project sustainability across the asset lifecycle

Industry involvement

• Membership• Partnership• Knowledge sharing• Thought leadership

Page 22: Projects & Assets Interplay between complimentary Frameworks Creating a nationally consistent approach to project sustainability across the asset lifecycle

Development activities

• Piloting the Operations Tool• Scoping and developing “Workforce” and

“Economics” Theme• Resource Sector• The business case • General IS improvements

Industry trends regarding IS

Transport authorities• Exploring embedment in gateway processes and

project procurement

Contractors & asset Owner/Operators• Formerly interested in IS rating for performance

and branding

Fund managers• Exploring how to align stakeholders and

performance test assets

Australian Green Infrastructure Council 24

Industry trends regarding IS

Government utilities• Exploring how IS could be a platform to

facilitate continuity

Material suppliers• Some suppliers are aligning products with IS

to enhance industry performance
