General Description
PROMATECT® 50 is Promat’s matrix technology of binding organic materials and inorganic minerals
within a calculated mineral matrix to form a monolithic core. Known as a Cement Bound Matrix board,
this low energy environmentally friendly manufacturing process makes excellent boards that offer not
only superior ire resistance but also exemplary physical strength, robustness and performance.
PROMATECT® 50 is off-white in colour. One face is extremely smooth and ready to form a inished
surface able to receive almost any form of architectural/inish treatment. The reverse face has a
(visible) ibre mesh reinforcement.
PROMATECT® 50 is resistant to the effects of moisture and will not physically deteriorate when used
in damp or humid conditions. Performance characteristics are not degraded by moisture. A fully
saturated, standard PROMATECT® 50 board retains up to 95% of its physical strength.
A health and safety data sheet is available from Promat and, as with any other material, should be
read before working with the board. The board is not classiied as a dangerous substance so no
special provisions are required regarding the transportation and the disposal of the product to landill.
They can be placed in on-site rubbish skips with other general building waste which should then be
disposed by a registered contractor in the appropriate and approved manner.

This informational brochure outlines a range of PROMATECT® 50
internal partition systems offered by Promat. It covers both general
recommendations and fire resistant solutions to meet most design
criteria for the installation of lightweight walls in buildings where high
impact, acoustic and/or fire resistance are critical factors, e.g. Hospitals,
Aged Care Education, Student Accommodation, Hotels, Sporting Venues,
Laboratories and Sole Occupancy Units etc. The information herein
provides the designer with a general overview of lightweight partition
design and the basic guidance to choose the system appropriate to
their particular project needs. If similar information is required for ceiling
systems, please contact your local Promat office.
In the modern world, any construction that involves accommodation or
community use on a daily basis is mainly concerned with establishing,
providing and sustaining exceptional standards of comfort, security and
service. These in turn are an integral component of the unique image
of many buildings and are central to their successful management and
business strategies. Buildings that aspire to leadership in their industry
must deliver quality in all aspects of their business, from the drawing board
right through to guest checkout ensuring satisfied customers ready to
repeat the experience on their next visit. It is a case of the whole being
greater than the sum of parts and for hotels for example, this can mean
structural standards from the foundations up, including critically important
walls and partitions.
For most buildings, no two walls are the same because different areas
in each type of building have different structural and performance based
requirements, from fire to acoustic to physical and aesthetic considerations.
While traditional brick or masonry wall techniques are still prevalent in some
parts of the construction industry, modern manufacturing technologies
and building techniques — including flat sheets for lightweight
structures — are fast gaining widespread recognition and acceptance.

Application of decorative wall inishes
Apart from utilitarian and physical functionality, wall and partition systems
are also a common substrate for secondary decorative linings ranging from
cladding, tiling, laminating or paint. It it therefore essential to assure that
wall and partition structures can accommodate final surface finishing works
as and when required.
A typical PROMATECT® 50 wall system has one layer of PROMATECT® 50
on either side of a metal or timber framework. The PROMATECT® 50 CBM
board itself forms a monolithic core with a smooth surface on one face,
while the other is reinforced with fibre mesh for added strength. The face
with the smooth surface is ready to receive virtually any form of architectural
finishing and treatment.
After fixing of PROMATECT® 50 to a metal framework, all joints are sealed
with jointing compound and paper tape. The surface forms an ideal
platform to accept wall finishes such as emulsion or textured paint. Note
should be made that tiles, laminates or wallpapers may also be attached to
PROMATECT® 50 boards using appropriate adhesives.
Below are the common finishings applicable to PROMATECT® 50 boards.
Water based acrylic or emulsion paints:-
Surface preparation
• After completing jointing and finishing, lightly sand the surface of the
joints with fine grade paper.
• Remove any dust from the board surface with a clean bristle brush or
damp, clean cloth.
Application
• Apply first coat of paint with roller/brush.
• Lightly sand the surface again to de-nib any rough surface.
• Two more coats of the paint can then be applied to achieve the final
finish.
Epoxy based finish in paint:-
Epoxy based finishing paint has high resistance to impact and abrasion. It
can also be also resistant to spillage of petrol, mineral oils, vegetable and
animal oils.
Surface preparation
• After completing jointing and finishing, lightly sand the surface with fine
grade paper.
• Remove any dust from the board surface with a clean bristle brush or
damp, clean cloth.
Application
• Apply first coat of epoxy based finishing paint with an ordinary paint
roller, brush or spray gun.
• Fill any surface irregularities and undulations with joint filler and level with
glasspaper, as above.
• Two more coats of the paint can then be applied to achieve the
final finish. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations at all times.• For best results, engage professional labour or craftsmen only from
reputable, experienced agencies.
Polyurethane paint:-
Polyurethane enamel paint with excellent gloss and colour retention can be
resistant to weather impact, abrasion and industrial corrosive atmosphere.
Surface preparation
• After completing jointing and finishing, lightly sand the surface with
fine grade paper.
• Clean off any dust from the board surface by means of brush or damped
cloths.
Application
• Smooth surface with fine paper.
• Apply first coat of polyurethane paint to the prepared clean, dry surface
with brush or spray gun.
• Check for undulations on the surface and where necessary fill holes or
gaps.
• Level with glasspaper.
• Apply two coats of paint to achieve final finish. Follow manufacturer’s
recommendations at all times.
Synthetic enamel paint:-
High gloss enamel paint comprised of synthetic resin and selected weather
resistant pigments for decoration and protection in humid conditions.
Surface preparation
• After completing jointing and finishing, lightly sand the surface with fine
grade paper.
• Fill any surface irregularities and undulations with joint filler and level with
sand paper.
Application
• Apply first coat of ready mixed synthetic enamel paint with brush, roller
or spray gun.
• Fill any surface irregularities and undulations and level with glasspaper,
as above.
• Two or more coats of paint can be applied to get final finish.
Follow manufacturer’s recommendations at all times.
Wall paper or vinyl ilm:-
Any type of wall paper and most standard vinyl films can be applied to the
surface of PROMATECT® 50 boards.
Surface preparation
• After completing jointing and finishing, lightly sand the surface with fine
grade paper.
• Remove any dust from the board surface with a clean bristle brush or
damp, recycled clean cloth.
Application
• Apply evenly a suitable adhesive to surface areas where wallpaper or
vinyl film are to be applied. Size the wall to seal against rapid drying.
• Paste wall paper or vinyl film uniformly working from one side,
as recommended by the manufacturer.• Work one small area at a time to ensure no air bubbles are trapped
between wall paper or vinyl film and the surface of the board.
• For best results, engage professional labour or craftsmen only from
reputable, experienced agencies.
Ceramic tiling:-
Ceramic tiles up to 12.5mm thick and a maximum weight of 32kg/m2
can be fixed to a PROMATECT® 50 surface by using a bed of adhesive
nominally 3mm thick. The framing structure strength may need to be
increased to cope with the extra weight of the tiles.
Surface preparation
• To provide good adhesion, the surface of PROMATECT® 50 should be
made slightly rough using coarse grade glasspaper or a wire brush.
• Remove any dust from the board surface with a clean bristle brush or
dampened, clean cloth.

Application
• A thin bed of an appropriate water resistant tile adhesive is applied to the
PROMATECT® 50 surface. Work on one small area at a time and spread
the tile adhesive evenly using appropriate applicator.
• Before tiling commences, fill tapered edge joints under the tiling area
with tile adhesive or jointing compound.
• Tiles are then fixed in the desired pattern as per specifications of the
manufacturer or architect.
• Press firmly so that the tiles are embedded evenly in the layer of
adhesive.
• As normal practice, remove and clean any excess adhesive coming
through the joints on the tile surface.
• Grout as normal.
Texture paint finishes
Special techniques and textures are a relatively new concept in surface
finishing attire, with textured surfaces becoming increasingly common.
These can be achieved by the application of regular paints applied in the
normal fashion and then, using special applicator tools, are treated to a
variety of unusual finishing techniques such as stipling, combing, dragging
and stumbling. The little extra effort or expense involved produces unusual
and frequently attractive results.
Thin hard laminate:-
Flexible thin laminate of up to 1mm thick may be used and is a common
post installation lining added to the surface of a substrate such as
PROMATECT® 50. Such laminates are employed for the purposes of
decoration, scratch resistance and anti graffiti/anti vandalism properties.
Surface preparation
• After completing jointing and finishing, lightly sand the surface with fine
grade paper.
• Remove any dust from the board surface with a clean bristle brush or
dampened, recycled clean cloth.
Application
• Apply a thin, even coat of contact adhesive (as recommended by
manufacturer) on the surface for the area where laminate will
be positioned. Generally contact adhesive must be applied to both
surfaces: e.g. laminate and PROMATECT® 50 board.
• Wait 10-15 minutes for the adhesive to feel touch dry and then place
the laminate over the board surface starting from one end (at the width
dimension edge) and work towards the other end, lightly pinching the
laminate at board edges. It is important to ensure that both laminate and
board are properly aligned.
• Visually inspect to ensure that no air bubbles are trapped between the
board surface and the laminate.
• Press the laminate tightly towards the board surface by means of
rollers or similar mechanisms to ensure that a tight bond is properly
achieved.
• Continue applying adequate uniform loading across the board area as
per the adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations.
Laminates
The procedure for applying hard laminates to the surface of
PROMATECT® 50 include the following:
• Use square edge PROMATECT® 50 to avoid improper jointing and
irregular finishing. Check that the surface is even.
• Fill joints and screw heads with jointing compound, then using glass
paper if required smooth the surface.
• Promat recommends using a maximum size of 1220 x 1220mm size of
hard laminate which can then be further cut to desired sizes.
• Place the cut pieces of laminate on the PROMATECT® 50 surface,
starting from one end and marking the outlines.
• Then apply a thin, even layer of neoprene-based laminate adhesive or
other suitable adhesive to each of the cut pieces of laminate. Put aside
in a safe, clean and dry place until adhesive becomes tacky.
• Meanwhile, apply a thin layer of the same adhesive to the
PROMATECT® 50 surface and also allow to become tacky.
• When both surfaces become equally tacky, take the laminate to the
marked surface.
• Align one edge of the cut piece of laminate to the matching line on
the PROMATECT® 50 surface and start pressing the laminate slowly
onto the PROMATECT® 50 surface, ensuring no air bubbles are trapped
within.
• Use a smooth, straight piece of wood to knock lightly on the laminate,
especially around the edges. This will ensure that the bond is properly
set.
• Place a light support against the laminate, e.g. a plyboard board
1220 x 1220mm in size and leave it for three to four hours.
• Laminate the other pieces in the same manner, providing a gap between
the laminates.
• It is recommended that (wooden or aluminium) beading is placed along
the edge of the laminate, filling the gap between panels.
• At all times adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations are to be
followed.
Precautions to be noted
• Use skilled workers with relevant experience in hard laminate
application.
• Use Neoprene based adhesive as this medium drying, strong adhesive
is known for its easy workability and best results.
• Edges of hard laminate should be secured by wooden or aluminium
beading.

PROMATECT® 50CBM Internal Applied Finished (Painting) and Application Specification
P50
AS2589.1 2007 (Gypsum linings - Application and finishing) defines quality of Gypsum lining application and finishing and the allowable deviations in
flatness of the framing surface to achieve the required level of finish for Gypsum linings. Promat recommends that unless otherwise stated in our literature,
this standard is adhered to for CBM board applications. Deviation from this standard will void any warranty offered.
AS2589.1 2007 refers to three levels of finishing, these are level 3; level 4 and level 5.
NOTE: Spray painting is NOT recommend for level 4 or 5. If spray painting is used, the best result can only be obtained when a fine roller is used between all coats and after the last coat.
AS2311:2009 (Guide to the painting of buildings) recommends a three coat paint system. Promat recommends that unless otherwise stated in our
literature, this is adhered to for CBM board applications. Deviation from this standard will void any warranty offered. Particular attention (but not exclusive)
should be paid to Clauses 2.4.5;2.4.6; 2.4.7;3.11 The cladding shall not be applied until all of the contracting parties are satisfied that the wall framing
complies with AS2589.1 2007.
The cladding shall not be painted until all of the contracting parties are satisfied that the surface is suitable to achieve the required level of finish without
further patching or flushing.
Level 3 shall be used for areas that do not require decoration (painting).
Level 4 shall be the default level unless otherwise specified.
Only flat and low sheen paints shall be used for level 4. Gloss or semi-gloss paints shall not be used. All joints and internal angles shall have
tape embedded in the jointing compound plus have a minimum of two separate coats of compound over all joints, angles and fastener heads
(flushing). For joints that do not have rebated/bevelled edge a minimum of two trowel widths of compound will be required.
All applications of compounds for finishing shall be carefully sanded to be free of all tool marks and ridges.
NOTE: Only roller coat application of paints is recommend.
In critical lighting conditions, surface imperfections and changes in texture between flushed and unflushed surfaces may still be apparent in
a level 4 finish. This is unavoidable.
Level 5 shall be used where gloss or semi-gloss paints are to be used or where critical lighting conditions occur on
flat or low sheen paints.
Even though this is the best possible finish achievable on linings it most certainly does NOT guarantee a blemish free finish. Only roller coating
is recommended for this level of finish and the surface texture shall be random in fashion and monolithic, concealing joints and fixing points.
Level 5 does NOT mean the surface is without texture variation.
Level 5 is difficult to achieve and will always require cooperation between the framer, plasterer and painter to establish suitable work practices
to achieve the agreed finish.
Promat does NOT recommend the use of CBM board where level 5 finish is required unless there is no glancing light (artificial or natural) and all trades
and interested parties have agreed on a level of finish that is obtainable and acceptable.
CBM board may be prone to have small pin holes on some of the surface. In these cases the installer or painter shall inspect the board before any
coating is applied and skim over these imperfections. A course roller is recommend for use in such situations.

Sound insulation walls
Privacy and a reasonable level of sound insulation are two basic requirements for all rooms and other facilities in every building type. Recognised fire
resistance coupled with effective acoustic performance of wall and partition systems, as well as other structural components, is therefore a major design
consideration.
Wall and partition systems with adequate acoustic performance are required to insulate and nullify acoustic disturbance from main sources of
unpleasant, unwanted ambient sound. These include but are not restricted to external traffic noise, audible sounds between rooms and noise from
hotel support facilities and service areas such as ventilation (HVAC) or exhaust ductwork, nearby escalators and lifts, as well as back-of-house facilities
such as engineering, power generation, administrative, convention and meeting rooms.
PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems are ideal wherever there is a need for sound insulation requirement from outside or within the building. It
is especially suitable for areas such as sole occupancy units, schools, hospitals, laboratories, conference rooms, auditoriums, seminar and convention
facilities, retail complexes, cinema and karaoke multiplexes, wherever big audiences and crowds are likely to congregate.
Configuring wall and partition systems
Depending on the levels of sound insulation level required, PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems can be configured in either single or double
independent layers. The steel stud dimensions depend upon the height and fire resistance performance requirements. These metal studs can be spaced
according to the overall wall thickness required to fulfil the desired acoustic rating, the system inclusive of boards, acoustic insulation and cross bracing.
Short length of horizontal backing channel must be evenly spaced to match horizontal board joints up to 2440mm maximum centres where appropriate.
If necessary, a layer of rated and specified sound absorber, such as glass or stone or rock wool batts etc, can be installed within the central air cavity to
further enhance sound insulation performance. It is important to note that the perimeters of such constructions should be sealed with a minimum of two
beads of appropriate acoustic sealant such as PROMASEAL® AN acrylic sealant, or equivalent.The thickness and number of layers of PROMATECT® 50
employed in such wall or partition systems depends on specified design performance. Each layer can be individually fixed to either side of the steel frame
structure.

It is typical of the international hotel and conference centre industry to require acoustic performance of walls to have a minimum Rw = 50dB rating.
PROMATECT® 50, with its high density characteristic, is recognised as one of the most effective sound insulating materials capable of meeting industry
standards with sound insulation performances based on various configurations of PROMATECT® 50 partition system.

Accommodating essential services
Many walls and partitions in modern structures are also used to
accommodate essential services such as electrical and mechanical (E&M)
services, ductwork and water and exhaust piping and the like.
Some of these can of course be attached to the outer face of the wall
or partition. In most cases however it is preferable, mainly for aesthetics,
space saving and protective reasons, to conceal and accommodate these
services behind the PROMATECT® 50 board or — in the event of two
boards being used on a single stud or frame — in the empty air cavity
space between the PROMATECT® 50 boards.
The PROMATECT® 50 wall takes these factors into consideration
and is designed as a construction friendly type of wall system able to
accommodate many essential services.
The common usage of versatile steel stud systems such as the RONDO
system, with minimum base metal thickness of 0.55mm, are available with
built in slots and pre-drilled circular apertures at regular intervals.
These apertures facilitate installation of all types of services in both
directions along the length of wall. Vertical drops of services can also be
installed using tie wraps to the steel studs.
The creation of small openings or simply removing switch boxes or fixed
objects means that access to concealed services is relatively easy to
achieve. Regular maintenance is facilitated by provision of a purpose built
access panel, hinged or otherwise, within the wall or partition system.
If repair work or wall relocation is required, PROMATECT® 50 walls
can be quickly dismantled and re-used with little wastage. There is no
chasing, cutting, filling or messy repair with cement mortar/plaster finishes
required.

Energy consumption and conservation
For every building, as with any profitable business, energy consumption and conservation have direct impact on daily operating costs, annual revenue
streams and bottom line profitably. A well designed and energy efficient building will therefore incorporate as many thermal insulation features as budget
and good planning sense will allow. Other green factors, such as carbon footprint and emmission values will become increasingly important and likely
weigh heavily on profits in the years ahead. Good thermal insulation is therefore essential, particularly for external and internal walls. It is usually specified
in terms of thermal conductivity.
The relationship between K and U values
The thermal properties of a building must balance heat loss and gain, thermal capacity and energy consumption. The loss and gain of heat through
surfaces of building elements (e.g. walls, floors, roofs and galzing, among others) depends on the temperature difference between ther air on both sides of
the system, the thermal resistance of the materials, their surfaces and the spaces between them.
K values represent the thermal conductivity of a building material while U values describe its thermal transmittance or air-to-air heat transmission coefficient.
These are calculated as follows:
R = K/Thickness U = i/R
R is resistance to heat loss and a higher R value means less heat loss.
Indeed, many of the different materials in use nowadays have at least one of these characteristics in common.
A material’s K value or thermal conductivity is based on the rate of heat transfer through a given thickness of the material. In general. Lower K values of
a material mean better insuation efficiency.
PROMATECT® 50 used as a wall or partition board is a perfect case in point because:
• the K value of PROMATECT® 50 is 0.193W/mK, as compared to 0.811W/mK for brick. PROMATECT® 50 insulation efficiency is therefore better by 75%.
• Its thermal insulation properties are further enhanced by the air cavity in the wall/partition.
• U-value of a standard 88mm thick PROMATECT® 50 partition wall — comprised of 12mm thick PROMATECT® 50 board on both sides of 64mm
studs — is approximately 1.82W/m2K compared to the U value of 114mm brick wall (with cement plaster and plaster finishing) of 4.55W/m2K,
representing thermal insulation efficiency better by approximately 60%. Please see below for calculation of U values.

PROMATECT® 50 partition and wall systems provide other advantages:
• Conserves energy and saves fossil fuels used to keep buildings warm in cold climatic conditions.
• Keeps air conditioned space cooler for longer duration in case of power failure (backup power systems are usually not designed to take air conditioning
load) drastically reducing the cost of energy.
• Reduced air conditioning load may be translated into lower investment and lower running costs for the air conditioning system.

Sustained international fire protection standards
Fire incidents can be disastrous and often very tragic, especially in densely populated built environments. Most fires usually occur without prior
warning. To minimise losses both to the local economy and to human life, measurable and scientifically tested preventive measures should be to a
universally recognised benchmark.
PROMATECT® 50 is used as a proactive fire protection building element in walls, partitions and ceiling systems. It has the following characteristics:
• Due to the natural fire resistant qualities at its core, PROMATECT® 50 does not ignite or burn by itself, and is classified as Class O material in accordance
with the criteria listed in many national Building Regulations. It complies with BS 476: Part 7: 1971 for surface spread flame, achieving Class 1 rating.
PROMATECT® 50 is non combustible to BS 476: Part 4 and also meets the requirements of AS/NZ 1530: 3 and AS/NZ 3837.
• Standard PROMATECT® 50 partitions with a single layer of board on both sides of a steel stud are capable of achieving fire resistance up to 120 minutes,
depending on thickness of board used.
• A typical overall wall thickness of 91mm PROMATECT® 50 partition, using 9mm thick boards, can provide a fire resistance period in excess of
120 minutes, meeting the criteria of stability, insulation and integrity in accordance with BS 476: Part 20 & 22 and AS 1530.4. No insulation material is
required within the wall cavity.
• Brick walls by nature also provide fire protection but being a non standard product, no precise data in terms of fire resistance is available. The fire
resistance characteristic depends upon the wall components, such as quality of bricks, specified mortar mix, locally available aggregate for cement
mortar mix and fine river sand for plastering, which vary from place to place. Consistent quality cannot be assured. Workmanship is also extremely
important.
• The recognised principle of compartmentation – dividing larger spaces into smaller, fire proofed compartments — can help to control the spread
of fire. PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems are lightweight and easy to install, encouraging flexibility on the part of the designer to
employ compartmentation, thus restricting spread of fire and smoke. Compartmentation of plenums for example, can also be designed by installing
an appropriate barrier of PROMATECT® 50 up to the soffit, preventing the horizontal spread of fire above ceiling level. For more details, please consult

Fast, Easy Installation and Lightweight P50
Lightweight and easy installation
Modern and efficient building techniques predicate fast construction. For hotels, cost effective construction means early guest check-in, a quick return to
positive cash flow projections and a faster return on investment. Hotel walls and partitions should therefore be easy to erect. This factor becomes even
more crucial if renovations are required in a functional and operational building. Closing a section or two is difficult to avoid if traditional brick and mortar
methods are employed, as is the control of noise and dust. PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems, however, eliminate most of these concerns.
Comparative advantages of PROMATECT® 50 over conventional wall and partition systems include:
• Even experienced bricklayers need to constantly and tediously check alignment with levels etc. Installation of PROMATECT® 50 employs a true frame
system, ensuring accurate alignment with minimal skill and supervision.
• Smooth surface of PROMATECT® 50 contributes significantly to better paint finish and less paint consumption.
• After jointing and finishing and application of top coat where required, the uniform primed background of PROMATECT® 50 helps to achieve much
smoother background surface, reducing significantly the cost of paint. Unlike masonry, no cement render is required to achieve a smooth surface.
• PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems are ready to accept a range of decorative finishes, saving time for surface decoration.
• PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems eliminate or substantially reduce water curing processes and messy cement render plastering associated
with brick walls, reducing costs and saving time.
Lightweight PROMATECT® 50 drywalls
The ultimate dead load of a building structure has a direct impact on building costs and savings. Using brick or masonry for wall construction means large
columns and beams are required to support massive loads. Minimising this factor wherever possible therefore makes a lot of structural and economic
sense.
In lightweight wall and partition structures, the size and number of beams can be significantly reduced, cutting costs and building materials generally.
Comparative advantages between PROMATECT® 50 wall and traditional brick wall include:
• Weight of standard 88mm deep PROMATECT® 50 wall (using 2 x 12mm thick board), is nominally 29kg/m2 while weight of 114mm brick wall is
270kg/m2 making a PROMATECT® 50 wall 89% lighter than a conventional brick wall equivalent.
• Weight of standard 104mm deep PROMATECT® 50 fire resistant wall (for FRL 120 minutes using 2 x 9mm thick board) is a nominal 43kg/m2 while the
weight of 228mm brick wall = 490kg/m2. This is 90% lighter than conventional brick wall construction
• Builders can install PROMATECT® 50 walls and partitions virtually anywhere with fewer concerns about position of structural grid or foundations.
• PROMATECT® 50 walls and partitions easily meet stability requirements for heights up to six metres. Heights beyond six metres are possible but require
careful design planning of frame structure. Please consult Promat Technical Department for full information.
• PROMATECT® 50 walls can be constructed to be loadbearing where required for heights up to four metres.
Maintenance free walls
A sensible schedule of routine maintenance is a pragmatic consideration in the life of every building, adding longevity and hence value, enhancing
functionality and optimising return on investment.
Fire resistant PROMATECT® 50 walls and partitions offer a number of advantages:
• Smooth, versatile surface easier to clean and maintain than conventional brick walls.
• Repairs easy and quick to realise using gypsum based plaster compound.
• Damaged boards can be replaced easily.
• Smooth surface free of cracks and other signs of shrinkage (subject to correct movement joint detailing in long and/or high walls).
• Flexible enough to tolerate normal building movement. Usage in higher movement environments is also possible with provision of extra clearance at fixing

Minor damage
Any minor, superficial damage such as small indentations or dented edges up to 5mm in depth can be smoothed down with fine sand paper, cleaned and
filled flush with two layers of surface compound. The first layer must be allowed to dry before application of the second. The application of a final troweled
topcoat will effectively conceal the damaged area and leave the surface ready for decoration.
Deep impact
When properly supported, PROMATECT® 50 walls and partitions can withstand high impact loadings, a decisive factor in many public area applications.
However, there will be times when damage is unavoidable and irreparable. Replacement is achieved simply by removing the damaged board, cleaning the
affected area before installing replacement PROMATECT® 50. All joints are then sealed with normal jointing compound and the refurbished wall is once
again complete.
Unlimited versatility
The application of PROMATECT® 50 in walls and partitions is limited only by the designer’s imagination.
• PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems facilitate the creation of internal divisions or changes to floor layout at any stage of the project.
• Installation of PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems can start immediately after flooring is completed. The installation sequence includes fixing
metal framework and fixing of door and window frame as per layout followed by fixing of board to enter side of framework.
• Standard fixing arrangement of T and L junctions etc makes the system monolithic and strong.
• Services can be installed and completed before board on other side of the frame is installed. Jointing and finishing is completed later and surface
decoration may be carried out at finishing stage.
• PROMATECT® 50 is so versatile that it can be used to encase or isolate any unwanted structure or walls with problems like seepage and cracks.
• PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems can be used to fit most shapes and contours to meet most aesthetic appearances.
• When construction timetables demand speedier completion, one side of the PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems can be finished as soon as
framework is installed in position while the other side can be finished after installation of services is completed.
• Other design and aesthetic criteria can be incorporated at any stage during and after main installation work is complete.

The science of space engineering
Conventional masonry walls and partition systems fabricated by traditional bricks are considerably thicker compared to a PROMATECT® 50 equivalent
performance. This has direct implications on how much lettable floor space can be appropriately measured and used effectively.
For example:
• 88mm thick PROMATECT® 50 drywall has physical properties and performance characteristics comparable to 149mm brick wall (115mm + 12mm
cement render on both sides + 5mm plaster on both sides).
• 104mm thick PROMATECT® 50 drywall has properties comparable to 259mm brick wall (225mm + 12mm cement render on both sides + 5mm plaster
on both sides).
• It occupies less floor space than masonry internal walls of comparable performance, thus maximising the floor area.

Doors, window fixing and joint details
Essential accessories such as doors, windows and joint details etc. are frequently incorporated into many wall and partition structures.
With the appropriate level of design planning, PROMATECT® 50 wall and partition systems easily cope with any realistic level of technical and aesthetic
accessories required.
For example, in a PROMATECT® 50 drywall framework of vertical metal studs at 610mm centres:
• Door/Window frames are easily fit in the openings made by introducing a perimeter horizontal member (track or channel) at the desired point (please
refer to diagrams on page 11).
• Full/half height openings are possible for any type of window, ventilator or door.
• In standard joint details, such as T or L junctions and drywall systems meeting with brick walls etc (see page 15), it is possible to employ single or double
layer board systems, depending on project criteria. Please consult Promat Technical Department for details.

Unaffected by moisture
With a strong bonded surface and additional mesh reinforcement, PROMATECT® 50 is extremely durable and can be used within most environments. It
does not degrade or release toxicity over time and is chemically stable.
The monolithic core of the Cement Bound Matrix board also gives PROMATECT® 50 superior moisture tolerance. PROMATECT® 50 is therefore ideal for
use in wet areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, swimming pool and spa areas.
Excellent service point accessibility for easy repair and maintenance
If services concealed in a PROMATECT® 50 wall or partition system require emergency repairs, immediate access is possible simply by creating a hole at
the appropriate location.
This is resealed after repairs are realised with pieces of PROMATECT® 50 cut to size, fixed to steal trimmers using screws of 200mm centres on all four
edges, sealed with paper skrim tape and finished with jointing compound. Two layers of top coat make the joint invisible and ready to accept any decorative
finish without a hint of patching.

Planned and unplanned loads
PROMATECT® 50 drywalls facilitate easy fixing of most type of loads or fixtures which can be attached either pre or post installation of the
PROMATECT® 50 drywall system.The basic concept is that the support or special fixers/fasteners to be used will also employ the support of the framework
of the drywall system. A wide range of propriety expanding fasteners are readily available to fix any load onto a PROMATECT® 50 wall or partition system.
Use fasteners in accordance with to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Positioning fixtures and accessories
Most types of wall hangings such as wash basins, kitchen cabinets and shelving etc can easily be installed to PROMATECT® 50 walls or partition systems.
Typical technical details include the following:
• Planned loads up to 25kg (e.g. cabinets and wash basins) can be easily added by fixing horizontal noggins made of timber members at the desired
location and securing to the steel stud frame.
• Unplanned loads up to 5kg (e.g. hanging picture frames, for example) can be added by inserting the screw or cavity fixture inclined downward at the
appropriate angle, as shown above.
• For planned loads up to 25kg, horizontal noggins can be fixed to the surface of the board via two additional studs and fixing the load to the
strengthening horizontal noggin.
• Fittings and fixtures such as lights and switches are easily fixed to PROMATECT® 50 drywalls. Please refer to page 36 for relevant recommendations.
• The fitting of toilet fixtures within PROMATECT® 50 wall or partition systems are fully outlined in recommendations on page 37.

INTENDED USES Cement Bound Matrix board used for fire protection of buildings.
2. COMPOSITIONDESCRIPTION Cement Bound Matrix fire protective and insulating board in large dimensions.
CHEMICAL CHARACTERISATION This product is a manufactured article, not a substance nor a preparation. It is manufactured from Sorel type cement, wood particles, glass fibre mesh, perlite and water.
3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATIONThe installed product in its final application, no hazards known. Not classified as hazardous or dangerous according to 67/548/EEC or 1999/45/EC.
By machining (drilling, cutting, sanding etc) the product, airborne dust can be released:
• As with most types of nuisance dust, excessive inhalation of dust may cause irritation of the airways.
• Eye contact with dust may lead to transient eye irritation or inflammation.
• Prolonged skin contact may lead to skin irritation.
• Long term hazards: see Section 11
• The handling and machining of this product may lead to the release of quartz containing dust. The inhalation of quartz from occupational/workplace sources may lead to chronic lung disease (silicosis) and an increased risk of cancer. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC Monographs 1997) “Crystalline silica inhaled in the form of quartz or cristobalite from occupational/workplace sources is carcinogenic to humans (Group 1).”
4. FIRST AID MEASURESSKIN CONTACT Rinse the skin with water
EYE CONTACT Do not rub the eye, rinse out. If eye irritation or inflammation persists, seek medical advice.
INHALATION Remove to fresh air and drink water.
INGESTION Drink water.
5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURESADDITIONAL INFORMATION The product is a non-combustible board, according to the local non-combustibility standard.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURESCLEAN UP METHODS Shovel up small pieces. Dampen down any dust before putting into appropriate skips.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGEHANDLING Instructions for handling and machining
• Dust, generated during machining and processing must be exhausted and the regulatory Occupational Exposure Limits for total and respirable dust must be respected.
• Work in a well-ventilated area.
• Use tools with appropriate dust exhaust equipment.
• Always use respiratory protective equipment when exposure is likely or can be foreseen to exceed the Occupational Exposure Limits (refer to local regulations).
• Collect dust with a vacuum cleaner or soak with water before sweeping up.
STORAGE Store in dry, covered and frost proof area.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTIONEXPOSURE LIMITSWhen machining (drilling, cutting, sanding etc.) boards, respect Occupational Exposure Limits for inhalable and respirable dust and for respirable quartz dust. Check the latest Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL) for airborne contaminants that are applicable in country of use.
EXPOSURE CONTROL Ensure vacuum dust exhaust with correct filter when using motorised machining tools.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Use appropriate individual respiratory equipment when exposure is likely or can be foreseen to exceed the Occupational Exposure Limits (e.g. for exposures up to 10 times the OEL use at least a P2 type duct mask. For higher exposure, use a P3 type mask).
SKIN AND HAND PROTECTION Use working clothes and gloves to protect against mechanical injury and direct skin contact.
EYE PROTECTION Use safety glasses whenever tools are used and dust is produced.
SKIN AND BODY PROTECTION Protective clothing.
