PROMISE Make every moment Grand WAILEA SEASIDE CHAPEL New England in style and Hawaiian in spirit, the Wailea Seaside Chapel welcomes you to its cool, restful sanctuary. Rustic red oak floors, warm sapele mahogany walls, complemented with richly burnished cherry pews and altar, invite restful reverence. Three enchanting chandeliers of 17th century design, meticulously handcrafted at the Murano glass works in Venice, Italy, hang like exquisite earrings from an airy vaulted ceiling. Every wall is alive with a magnificent stained glass mural, each depicting scenes of traditional life. Entitled “Beginnings”, the stained glass murals were created specifically for the Wailea Seaside Chapel by local artist Yvonne Cheng and symbolize the start of a new life for the bride and groom. FRONT PANEL Two women, surrounded by hanging heliconia and bird of paradise blossoms. The woman on the left wears a royal ‘ilima lei, while the other is adorned with a lei made from the feathers of the mamo, or o’o, bird. Above the chapel door is the wedding couple. In addition to a feather head lei, the bride’s neck is adorned with a lei Niho Palaoa. The lei Niho Palaoa is a highly prized pendant, carved from a whale’s tooth into the shape of a hook, and fastened to strands of braided human hair. REAR PANEL A trio of women, wearing traditional kapa, or tapa, garments. The center individual holds a gourd vessel, while her companions carry bowls made of koa wood. The white flowers are fragrant plumeria blossoms, and the plants in the foreground are taro for making poi, a staple in the Hawaiian diet. LEFT PANEL A spear-wielding warrior, clad in a malo (loincloth), cape and Mahiole helmet. Behind him, a woman wearing an ‘ilima head lei presents an offering in a koa bowl, while another, adorned with a feather lei, chants for the God’s blessing.
