Why promoting ORCID at NCCU?

n  Resolving name ambiguity caused by identical names, same translation names, authors indexed under more than one name, authors with name variations throughout their publication career (for example, name changes following marriage) and change of workplace, and so on.

n  Ensuring that academic research outcomes can be correctly performed attribution, citation and infometrics.

n  Economizing the cost of maintaining Publications Catalogue by directly importing publication lists from such as SCOPUS or WOS via ORCID APIs.

n  Enhancing Institute Repository system to integrate personal and institutional research outputs to promote global visibility and improve external evaluation results.

Coordination with Administration Sections

n  The NCCU President’s Support –  The NCCU Library Curator introduced and emphasized the importance of

ORCID at University and Administrative Meetings and won a full support from the President.

–  The President has signed an official letter to invite faculty members to join the ORCID Program.

n  Coordination with the Office of Research & Development (ORD) – The ORD agreed to display a “Register ORCID” link and a “Delegate

trusted individuals” option on Faculty Publications Catalogue System. – The Dean and the Vice Dean of ORD took the lead in registering for an

ORCID iD. – The ORD and the NCCU Library will co-host an ORCID Workshop to

promote ORCID in this November.

System Integration

n  Coordinating with NCCU Computer Center – The Computer Center assisted and worked with System Librarians

to add “Register ORCID” link and “Delegate trusted individuals” option on Faculty Publication Catalogue System.

– To expand the use of information of Faculty Resume System and Faculty Publication Catalogue System.

n  Enhancing Institutional Repository (IR) System – The IR has been enhanced by applying the DSpace Open Source

provided by NTU. – The system librarians are working on modifying and transforming

IR system to Scholar Hub.

Strategies for Promotion and Implementation

n  Promotional Activities –  Issuing an official document to all faculty members with the

President’s letter, User Guide of NCCU Faculty Publication Catalogue System and individual/group reservation form for registering ORCID.

– Posting an announcement on the NCCU Library’s website.

n  Implementing Processes – According to the reservation requests, the subject librarians go to the

designated location to assist faculties in registration and delegating the trusted individual.

– Holding workshops by inviting database vendors to illustrate the benefits ORCID would bring to the authors, contributors and institutions.

Objectives of Different Phases

n  Short term objectives:to encourage faculties to register for an ORCID iD and help create personal catalogue of research outputs of all forms to guarantee a correct measures of academic influence.

n  Mid term objectives:to build NCCU Scholars Hub to display NCCU Talent Bank and academic achievements as well.

n  Long term objectives: to increase the global visibility by automatically importing NCCU research outputs into ORCID based on ORCID APIs.

ORCID建置指引

Short-term Strategies: to encourage faculties to register for an ORCID iD (1)

n  Our approach is to write a computer program that can display an “ORCID registration Guidance” link on Faculty Publication Catalogue System and show the processes to guide faculties to delegate subject librarians as trusted individuals.

Short-term Strategies: to encourage faculties to register for an ORCID iD (2)

The subject librarians help faculties to maintain publications catalogue and create a simple author profile on ORCID.

p To create a complete publication lists in Scopus and WOS databases.

p To set up the author’s affiliated institutions as NCCU. p To start working with faculties who have once received

the Research Fellow Award from NCCU in the past few years.

Short-term Strategies: to encourage faculties to register for an ORCID iD (3)

n  The subject librarians manually help faculties to retrieve and collect the list of publications in Scopus or WOS and transfer them into ORCID accounts.

Holding Workshops on Creating and Maintaining ORCID Publications Catalogue

-To teach PhD students and faculty assistants how to transfer faculty publications spread over a number of different databases (e.g. SSCI) to ORCID and at the same time to promote ORCID applications. Learn how to maintain an ORCID profile and everybody gets a unique academic identifier!

Mid-term Strategies: NCCU Scholars Hub (1)

n  To modify and transform NCCU IR System to Scholars Hub. n  To display faculties’ research outputs as author-based display interface, not

article-based display interface used in the current NCCU IR system

Page 13: Promoting ORCID Adoption on Campus - an Overview of NCCU Libraries Progress (Chih-Ming Chen)

– To analyze and visualize research outputs and institutional performance as well.

n  To display faculty cooperative relationship within academic circles via social networks. – To capture the information

directly from IR database. – To correctly identify authors by

ORCID iDs. – To create a graph of the

cooperative relationship by referring the authors as nodes and co-publications as edges.

– To present in an interactive fancy way.

n  Technologies used: – PHP、HTML、CSS、

JavaScript、d3.js, codeigniter(MVC)

Mid-term Strategies: NCCU Scholars Hub (3)

Page 15: Promoting ORCID Adoption on Campus - an Overview of NCCU Libraries Progress (Chih-Ming Chen)

– To integrate ORCID APIs and automatically import the author’s publications list and profile from NCCU Faculty Catalogue System into ORCID.
