Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ) in China 3. (1) NEDO’s Demonstration Projects – Stand-alone Technology –
1. Reduction of energy consumption by introducing a major energy conservation technology used in Japanese steel industry.
2. As opposed to conventional wet quenching systems, in a Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ ) system, red-hot coke is cooled by inert gases. The heat energy from the red-hot coke is recovered in a waste heat boiler for use as steam, resulting in energy conservation as well as a reduction in coke particle emissions.

Smart Community in China (Gongqingcheng) •Carried out in an inland city (Gongqingcheng city, Jiangxi Province), where the population is expected to increase along with ongoing urbanization.
•This demonstration project, aiming to achieve both economic growth and a low-carbon society, will focus on developing a smart community that can flexibly respond to urban changes.
•Another aim is to establish an advanced smart community model for small- and medium-sized cities in cooperation with the Gongqingcheng municipality and the State Grid Corporation of China.

Approach for Realizing Low-Carbon Economies
4. Conclusion
• In the short-term, a market-pull approach (e.g., subsidies and regulations for users) is more effective than R&D. In the long-term, both a technology-push approach (including R&D) and market-pull approach are necessary.
• In order to facilitate energy efficiency in an effective manner, appropriate initiatives need to be undertaken. • Industry: State-of-the-art technology for
manufacturing processes (e.g., iron and steel, cement, chemicals, and pulp and paper)
• Transport and buildings: Smart communities consisting of energy efficient technologies and renewables
• Power generation: CCTs (USC, A-USC, IGCC and IGFC) and renewables (Solar PVs, CSP, wind, geothermal) 28
