TS: One of the biggest preoccupations to deny the FTA negotiations between the United States and Ecuador is the position of
the United States that wants to acquire the property rights of animals and plants. SS#1: Furthermore, there are not international
laws to guide negotiations about the property rights of biodiversity and it will be irrational for Ecuador to give away the patents of all
the Amazon and Andean species. FED#1:For example, in Ecuador there is a frog named Epipedobathes tricolor whose venom is
two hundred times more powerful than morphine, and it is used to reduce pain in patients with cancer; consequently, Americans
want to take advantage of that and patent it. SS#2: Similarly, the United States wants to patent surgical and therapeutic diagnostics
based on native knowledge of indigenous people. FED#2: In fact, it is the case of the “ayahuasca, uña de gato, maca, and sangre
de drago” which are used to cure some illnesses such as diabetes and rheumatism. SS#3:In addition, Americans not only want that,
besides they pretend to negotiate the whole Amazon region because they know its importance as the lungs of the world, but in an
ironical form they did not sign the Kyoto Treaty in 1992. FED#3: In fact, one of the United States’ strategies is to persuade Ecuador

to believe that the country will export more and become wealthy because of the FTA negotiations, but actually Ecuador is a rich
country because of its biodiversity and natural resources located especially in the Amazon region. CS: In conclusion, it will be
irrational and unfair to negotiate intellectual patents of biodiversity due to Ecuador is not in the same conditions to negotiate.
