Answer Rick I can’t stand reality TV. I mean, OK, if it’s a property programme or a gardening programme, fine, but most of them are just –they’re set up to humiliate people.

Tricia Not always.Rick I disagree. People are on show. It’s like watching animals in a zoo. I mean, would you appear on a reality show?Tricia Maybe. I don’t know. Probably not.Rick There you are you see? You don’t want to be humiliated.Karen Some people do very well on reality shows. Shadow readingThe largest international conference on climate change has opened in Copenhagen, Denmark. Representatives from more than 190 nations are seeking a new treaty, designed to halt the warming of the earth. One United Nations official has asked for $30 billion to help poor countries deal with climate change. Negotiators have not yet been able to agree on how much rich countries should provide to help poor countries. South Africa has offered to reduce the greenhouse gases it released into the air by 34% by the year 2020. The environmental group “Green Peace” says that makes South Africa a star at the conference.

Consider the following rejoinder: I did not say you stole my red hat.

1) Work in pairs and read aloud the sentences with different word stresses.

2) Discuss what possible meanings those stresses may convey. For example, if some stress is placed on the first word,

I did not say you stole my red hat. Then the meaning contains the idea that someone else said it, not me.3) Finish the exercises on the next page with your partner.
