When Beck shared the news that his latest album,
Song Reader, would be released only as sheet music,
the music industry got creative. The only way to hear
Becks new material was to take the sheet music, readit (or nd someone who knows how to read it), and
learn how to perorm your own interpretation o
the song.
So we gathered a mix o nine well-known local
Orlando bands plus two student bands and had
them each perorm their own dierent rendition o
one o the songs. And when we say dierent, we
mean dierent: there was a vocal percussionist, a
bluegrass group, a cellist, and more. The complete
collection was all shot here in Full Sails fagship
recording studio, the Audio Temple.
I respect Beck so much as an artist that there was
this overwhelming eeling that we didnt want to let
him down, says Andy Brooks, the singer o Transmit
Now, one o the local bands involved in the project.
But in the end we came to realize that there were no
preconceptions when it came to Song Reader; there
was no right or wrong interpretation. There was only
your own and thats exactly what Beck wanted.
Over the course o three days during the week o
December 18, the bands took over the Audio Temple
to record their versions. All o the live recording
sessions were shot by our YouTube team along
with aculty and students rom the Film program.
Recording Arts Course Director Darren Schneider
engineered the entire project.
Two ree and open-to-the-public concerts added to the
excitement o this years Hall o Fame Week experience.
Hundreds o students, Hall o Fame VIPs, and local music
ans illed the Full Sail Live venue on a rainy Valentines
Day night or a show by Louisiana singer-songwriter Marc
Broussard. The crowd enjoyed a lively perormance o his
unique sound that has been called Bayou soul. Two days
later, music lovers gathered once again to listen to Nashville-
based singer-songwriter Mat Kearney as he closed out the
Hall o Fame estivities. His radio-riendly rock with a twist o
reggae and hip-hop captured the audiences attention as he
played songs rom his three ull-length studio albums.

Following two successul Iron Manlms and a

revisits a battle-hardened Tony Stark, crated under
the sharp guidance o writer/director Shane Black.
The lms crew included 22 alumni; among this

(electrician) and Je Wallace (set lighting technician)
who worked together on the lms lighting team. We
caught up with them beore Iron Man 3s premiere
to learn about the production o this summers rst
major release.
The sheer magnitude o the production was
something to behold: Chrys described a massive
studio setup that included 10 stages ... and they
took up almost all o them with these giant
set pieces.
Je was particularly in awe o working alongside
the director o photography, Academy Award winner
John Toll, saying that Toll was just an amazing guy
to work with; its something I never thought Id be
doing ten years ago when I graduated.
Working on the StarCraftteam at Blizzard

dierent real-time strategy scenarios.
Braveis Pixars rst stab at a traditional airy tale,
telling the story o a headstrong princess in the ctional

and immersive world, and animators took our years
developing its look. Helping to guide the environment
team was Digital Media graduate and Full Sail Hall o Fame

character-like, he says. Its very lush and complex with
the way that things are growing up against each other,
everything just seems to be alive.

Full Sail recently welcomed Kenny Carkeet,
keyboard/guitar player or Red Bull Records band
AWOLNATION, to campus to speak about his
career in the music industry. A graduate o the
Entertainment Business
and Recording Arts degree
programs, Kenny talked
about his career path aterschool, lie on the road,
his creative process,
and more.
His journey has been
interesting to say the
least. He ventured out to
Los Angeles to ollow his
dream in music, leaving
a successul career at an Orlando law rm. I just
sold everything I had and drove out there. I didnt
have a job set up, but I knew I wanted to work with
artists, and thought it was worth a shot.
Kenny began picking up audio work, creating music
or video games at Activision,
doing postproduction or an
action sports lm company,
and more. During this time hemet music producer Jimmy
Messer, and was hired as
an assistant at his recording
studio. Kenny would spend
the next two years there,
and its there where he met
AWOLNATION singer Aaron
Bruno. Its all a ar cry rom
his days in a suit and tie, and
he never stops appreciating the hard work and
good ortune that helped him get there.
Lindsey, who was valedictorian o
her class when she graduated rom the
Education Media Design & Technology
masters program, now works as the
curriculum specialist or technology integration orWest Hartord Public Schools. As her title suggests, she
helps with incorporating technology into the districts
classrooms and working with teachers and principals
to develop tech-riendly lesson and unit plans.
Lydia is a coordinator or
international marketing services and
digital marketing at Sony Music, the
second largest music label in the world.
Ater graduation, she moved to New York City
and sent out resumes to her top companies, and
today, she works in Sonys International Marketing
department. Her responsibilities include everything
rom determining international markets or artists, to
maintaining international artist websites.
As a longtime gamer, Recording Arts alum Mike
Niederquell made the easy decision o pursuing this
specialized eld o game audio ater graduation. Hes
since built a successul career on the audio team at
Sony Computer Entertainment
America. Mike was hired as
a sound designer at Sonys
Santa Monica studio in July
2011, working alongside game
developers to help with audio
content creation, implementation,
scheduling, tool development,
and asset management all
while striving to create the best
possible soundtrack.
Recording Arts
graduate and 2011
Hall o Fame inductee
David Farmer worked on
Peter Jacksons most recent project,
The Hobbit. David was responsible
or creating the audio eects youllhear throughout the lm, including
the cues or many o its strange and
wonderul creatures.
By day, Matthew DAmato (Film, Digital Arts
& Design) works at New York production
company NYPS, helping to produce content or top
ashion and luxury liestyle brands. And at night and
on the weekends, his ocus is Valiant Pictures, a lm
and video company he co-ounded. While I was at
school I was always working hard, staying up late,
doing multiple projects, networking with people,
he says. That denitely
helped me when I came
up here to New York,
and Ive just been
going nonstop.
Jason Lyons is a 2007 graduate o Full
Sails Game Development program,
and worked on Halo 4as a gameplay
programmer at Certain Anity, an independent game
studio in Austin. Jasons position had him providing
support to the designers to get their content
unctioning properly in the game. This involved in-
depth work like creating new pieces o tech, altering
extended unctionality to existing tech, and nally
debugging the code to make sure all o the eatures
were implemented seamlessly.
Matt has always been interested in world issues and politics, a passion he thinks helped him get into the
editorial side o news. I worked as an assignment editor or a local NBC/CBS aliate in Pennsylvania or a
little over our years beore coming to CNN. Now he is in the epicenter o inormation, and hes in heaven.
I love bringing inormation to people. I also love the act that I learn new things every day. Matt was
recognized or his contribution to 2011 Arab Spring coverage, which garnered CNN a Peabody Award. I
think at the end o the day when youre tired, stressed and ready or bed, you can still look back and smile
about it and cant wait or the challenge the next day will bring. This happens to me every day at CNN.
