You can also write what is NOT
matter!
Properties of Matter
What is a Property?
Property – characteristic that enables us to
distinguish one kind of matter from another
Physical Properties A physical property can be observed or
measured without changing the
identity of the substance
Examples:
Extensive Properties
Extensive – depends on the amount of
matter present
Examples:
Intensive Properties
Intensive – does NOT depend on the
amount of matter present
Examples:
Chemical Properties A chemical property refers to the ability of a
substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances
Examples:
These properties cannot be observed without changing the substance!
New Vocabulary…
Quantitative – a
numerical description
of a substance
Qualitative – a description
of a substance that does
NOT include a number
…And There’s More…
Solubility – the maximum
amount of solute that will
dissolve in a given amount
of solvent at a given
temperature and pressure
Stability – the tendency of
a material to resist
change or decomposition
…Last Two!
State/Phase of Matter –
the physical forms in
which all matter naturally
exists on Earth
Density – a ratio that
compares the mass of an
object to its volume
Density of water = 1 g/mL
Physical Changes
Physical Change – a change in a property of
matter that does NOT result in a change in
identity of the substance
Examples:
Chemical Changes
Chemical Change – a change in which the
composition and properties of a substance
change, altering the identity of the substance
(also called a chemical reaction)
Examples:
Evidence
Formation of a gas or precipitate
Change in color
Change in temperature
Change in odor
Law of Conservation of Mass Mass is neither created nor destroyed
during a chemical reaction; it is conserved
Antoine Lavoisier
