Integrated DesignToday’s high performing buildings are systematically integrated across all disciplines – from passive day lighting to active HVAC to dynamic control systems. Design teams work together to model interdependent factors such as lighting, occupancy and HVAC demand. Electrical and data systems designers work together to design monitoring and control systems. Integrated design leverages the collective expertise of the full team for eff ective and innovative solutions.

Energy Effi ciencyLED lighting uses a fraction of the energy of most other lighting sourcesand can be applied in almost every capacity. Extensive use of computer modeling serves to optimize the complimentary eff ect of the building systems. The result is a building that is in harmony with the occupants while using less energy. Control systems, including occupancy and daylight harvesting sensors, reduce energy use such as lighting and HVAC when less is needed and during occupied and non-occupied hours.

DaylightingWindows, skylights, interior clerestory windows and glass walls all allow light transfer through a space. Building orientation, if designing a new building, can be planned to take advantage of the best seasonal lighting.

Reduced Water UseLow and no water use plumbing fi xtures reduce potable water use. Low water and native landscaping with automated systems reduce water requirements. Climate responsive control systems manage water volumes based on precipitation.

Materials SelectionDurable, locally-sourced, sustainable, and low VOC materials put less stress on the environment by using less, lasting longer, and reducing emissions.

Sustainable DesignCSHQA CPU Exhaust System

When CSHQA engineers modeled HVAC systems for their new offi ce in a renovated warehouse, they included a factor for CPU-generated heat. While not a problem in the winter, it added signifi cantly to the summer cooling load. Our lead mechanical engineer designed and built a special housing that is added to the exterior of each computer to exhaust the heat to a central system. Depending on the season, the heat is either exhausted to the outside or recycled back into the building. This integrated system is estimated to reduce the building cooling load by 5 tons.

Housing assembly attached to computer and ductwork

CSHQA has been a leader in energy effi cient design since the early 1970’s. We are committed to design of high performance buildings using innovative, energy smart design and engineering, industry leading materials, sustainable construction protocols, and the latest LEED, Green Globes and ENERGYSTAR® rating systems.

Specifi c Project Experience

Workplace Strategic/Environment PlanningSuccessfully creating a work place environment that encourages productive exchanges, connection between people and technology, cooperation and sense of community takes a collaborative approach. It is important that the user group is engaged early on as well as the members of building facilities, and even the public, to determine the best possible approach to a specifi c project. Often times some of our best resources are furniture companies and other product vendors. Our new CSHQA Boise offi ce space is an excellent example of successful strategic workplace design and environment planning. We were actually able to transform the culture within our offi ce through the design and relocation of our work space.

We approach each project as a unique design challenge. A strategic planning project typically begins with studies that include research from National organizations we participate in, publications, case studies and past project knowledge. Workplace surveys can also act as a vital tool to understand what’s working, and what is not working in an existing environment. Putting our heads together, and relying on research and experience based knowledge will provide the design team with the information they need to develop strategies for successful workplace design and environment planning.

Workplace Strategic/Environment Planning Projects

• CSHQA Offi ce

Public Space Planning The most important aspects of public space planning are accessibility, wayfi nding, and traffi c fl ow. There are many white papers and case studies available to us through our organizational network and resources. Other components to consider for public space planning include: technology resources, layout, and aesthetics. Company image is also best demonstrated in public spaces as an identifying component in public space planning.

The projects listed below are good examples of successful space planning projects. In particular, Pioneer Federal Credit Union demonstrates our innovative approach to wayfi nding. Rather than utilizing an extensive array of signage in this space, we used interior materials to help the public navigate the space.

Public Space Planning Projects:

• Pioneer Federal Credit Union Remodel

• St. Luke’s Fruitland Clinic

• Glanbia Cheese Innovation Center and Corporate HQ

• Boise City HR Annex Remodel

CSHQA – Boise Offi ceBoise, ID

The new CSHQA offi ce is designed to be a living laboratory for energy effi cient, sustainable and innovative design and to be shared with clients, peers and the public. The 20,000 SF space can house up to 90 professional staff and includes a wide variety of amenities including multiple conference rooms and casual work spaces. The heart of the offi ce is the open plan studio which extends across the entire space from north to south. The project is registered with the certifi cation goal of LEED® Platinum.

In this building the public and private spaces are separated by a ‘spine’ of fi ve offi ces and conference rooms, yet it is a soft separation with the reception entry and desk creating a segue from public to private. Extensive daylighting fi lls the offi ce in light hours and a variety of LED light fi xtures compliment the fl uorescent lights in the studio. Outside the studio LED fi xtures are the only non-daylight source.

Adaptive reuse was very important to the fi rm. All work stations and nearly all other furniture was relocated from the previous offi ce. The number of casual meeting spaces was nearly doubled, as were the number of conference rooms.

Technology has been integrated into the lighting controls, display systems, and video communications throughout the building. Imaginative and bold colors are the backdrop to the space and interior glass wall open up the space even further. CSHQA ownership wanted the space to be a tangible, measurable showcase of technology for the industry. They are “practicing what they preach” by inhabiting and documenting the state-of-the-art offi ce space they designed.

CSHQA provided interior design for this retail banking project (architecture by others). Pioneer was looking for a new identity, so it was important to the client that the design and interior communicate a refreshed company image. CSHQA designers challenged Pioneer to break from their preconceived notions of not only how a bank looks, but also how it works.

Vibrant colors without the traditional dark woods prevail. The open space reveals accessible staff visible from many vantage points, including the front door, and room to relax. A community room is available after hours. Located on Broadway Avenue, many of the banks’ target customers are younger, tech savvy and looking for a place that feels right.

Currently under construction.

Important considerations included wayfi nding, clear separation of public and private spaces, and a welcoming atmosphere for the people of Fruitland and surrounding rural areas. The layout, extensive signage, and the separation of clinic, emergency and lab traffi c contributed to successful wayfi nding inside the clinic spaces.

The public/private separation was very clear, with what is termed a hard separation, and contributes to the privacy necessary in a medical setting. At the same time, the nurses’ stations are open and accessible and doctors’ offi ces are adjacent to exam rooms. This aspect of design was important to allow clients to see the caregivers.

Colors, materials and fi nishes refl ect the owner’s preferences and brand while conveying a sense of comfort and restraint appropriate for a rural community. Color palettes were selected to echo the natural colors found in agricultural and open spaces. Materials and fi nishes had to meet strict standards for medical environments, as well be durable and long-lasting.

Throughout the process there was signifi cant collaboration between the end users/caregivers and the design team to ensure both their immediate and long-term needs would be met.

Specifi c Project Experience

Glanbia Corporate Offi ce and Cheese Innovation CenterTwin Falls, ID

CSHQA provide full architecture and engineering services for this two-building corporate campus in downtown Twin Falls. The Corporate Headquarters called for signifi cant programming to fulfi ll organizational goals. The Cheese Innovation Facility was designed for public and client interaction.

The Corporate Headquarters was literally designed around the building program. Organizational fl ow, adjacencies and collaboration were key considerations. The layout balances private offi ces and open work stations with daylight distribution and visual access to exterior windows and views. The interior design communicates the company image throughout private and public spaces with a neutral palette and splashed of vivid accent colors from the company logo. Consistent materials were specifi ed throughout the building (and the Cheese Innovation Center) for a unifying theme.

The program and layout of the Cheese Innovation Center was designed to accommodate visitor tours and to showcase the advanced research being done by the company. Glass-walled viewing areas allow visitors and potential clients to see into the lab while transmitting light into the interior
