WITSA will also view the level of commitment expressed by the host to organize a world-class conference that will reflect positively on the host country as well as on WITSA. It is important for the host to demonstrate that the WCIT will receive support from not only the ICT industry but its government as well.
Due consideration will also be given to the host, industry and host country commitment to support the congress; project staffing, marketing, and capabilities to host a large, prestigious international conference, projected attendance, geographical location, and venue. Kenya’s Events &FestivalsA mixture of cultural activities, traditional festivals and much-loved sporting events make up Kenya’s busy calendar. In addition, countless African events are held in many of the country’s towns and villages throughout the year.
Maralal Carmel derby takes place in the striking
and arid district of Maralal. Normally a quiet area
with few visitors, Maralal bursts to life for this
extraordinary occasion. The camel derby has a
number of environmental and peace-promoting
aims. It was established to bring nomadic pastoral
peoples together and help them interact, to
raise awareness of the importance of camels as
economically viable sources of livelihood, to raise
money for the education of pastoralist children, and
to draw attention to the increasing desertification of
the region.
Camels, more often used as pack animals in northern
Kenya, come into their own during this three-day
spectacle, displaying their strength, speed and
skill. The event draws attention to the incredible
endurance of this animal that can go without water
for 14 days, having oval rather than round blood
cells so its blood can flow even when thickened by
dehydration.
The camels are rode by Kenyan and international
champions, Kenya’s finest camels compete in the
professional camel races. The start of the race, in the
center of Maralal town, sees camels vying for lead
position and scrambling to get ahead. Participants
continue to battle for position along the challenging
42km track, racing through the desert towards the
finish line. Amateur races are also open to everyone
and camels are available for rent. For those who do
not want to engage in the race there are plenty of
other brilliant camel related events including camel
polo, camel auctions and camel products for sale.
The event has blossomed with time into being a
happening that is about more than just the camels.
There is a cross-country half marathon, a fun run,
donkey rides, dances and bike races that attract
both professional bike riders and amateurs. And for
those who prefer simply to soak up the atmosphere,
the area, dotted with bars, nyamachoma kiosks, and
stalls selling local handicrafts, provides a colorful,
vibrant and fun introduction to this little visited
region.

Rhino Charge is a distinct motor sport competition
that is held annually with the aim of raising money
for conservation of the Aberdare Ecosystem. It is
an exciting competition that requires bravery and a
high level of skill in off-road driving and navigation
besides that it also attracts hundreds of spectators
who head into the bush to watch the event. The
Aberdare national park is a home for the endangered
black Rhino; it is also an important water catchment
area providing water to the Tana and Athi rivers,
Kenya’s main rivers. A variety of vehicles aim to reach
designated checkpoints scattered over approximately
100 square kms of rough terrain in the shortest
distance possible. During the rally, teams have to
make the decision between taking a safer, wider route
or taking a riskier more direct route. The teams must
then plot the control points on the map and decide
their route. Navigation is by compass or GPS and the
winner is the competitor who visits all controls in the
shortest distance, GPS measured.
The funds raised from the Charge go directly to Rhino
Ark, a conservation charity working to fence Kenya’s
Aberdare Forest, offering protection to endangered
species and habitat.

the rules and criteria of the event. The Africa Concours
d’Elegance showcases vintage and classic cars from
around the world.
It’s not only about cars and motor cycles because this
is a major social event here in Nairobi, in which many
use it to socialize with friends and family. It attracts
elegance when it comes to dress code, as people
adorn the latest fashions.
The Safaricom 7s is a tournament that is run annually

Nairobi is connected by tarmacked roads to Kenya’s other major urban centers, such as Mombasa,
Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Garissa, Machakos, Kisii, and Kericho among others. The City is currently
undergoing major road constructions to upgrade its infrastructural network. Most roads are well lit and
surfaced with adequate signage. Bypasses are currently under construction and seek to ease congestion
in Nairobi’s downtown area and the surrounding suburbs.
Nairobi is served primarily by Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. It is the largest airport in East and
Central Africa. The airport is situated 17 km (10 miles) from Nairobi’s Central Business District. The airport

at Nairobi Railway Station, which is located near the city centre. The line runs through Nairobi, from
Mombasa to Kampala. Its main use is freight traffic, but regular nightly passenger trains connect Nairobi
to Mombasa and Kisumu. A number of morning and evening commuter trains connect the center with the
suburbs.

Conference tourism is very sensitive to security matters. KICC has therefore put in place firm measures to ensure delegates and visitors safety while in and around the centre.
The Center is centrally and strategically located in the Central Business District and is surrounded by highly secured institutions like the Kenya Police Headquarters, High Court of Kenya, Office of the President, among other very highly secured buildings. This alone is a guarantee of security at the Centre.
Inside the centre, KICC enjoys a fully equipped police station to beef up the security of delegates. The Centre is also guarded by internationally acclaimed security firm known as the Bob Morgan (BM). KICC prides itself in having one of the latest ultra modern electronic security systems that covers all meeting rooms, entrances main gates and all the walking paths in the building.
The Centre has strong walls and several gates with barriers all the way from the main gates to the entrance of the building. After the security check at the main gate, screening of delegates and visitors is done at the entrance to the building. KICC does not only stress on security, it also ensures safety of every individual in the Centre. The centre therefore has intruder alarm systems that include panic buttons to alert people in case of fire or any emergencies. Fire fighting equipment have also been placed at all corners of the building.
During most of our events especially major ones like AGOA, 7th global conference on health, which happened recently, other security stake holders including the Government of Kenya come in to ensure security is beefed up all the way from the airport when delegates arrive into the country. A security committee including Kenya police, the host KICC, Immigration department, Airport security, Protocol security, Emergency response organizations, and the tourist police provide security oversight.
The committee conducts a risk assessment on crowd risk, fire, catering, noise and cash in transit if any. However for most of these functions, registration of delegates is done online way in advance and identification badges given to them either in advance or on the opening day.
This therefore means that by the day of the event, only the registered and vetted delegates are allowed into the centre minimizing chances of people with ill motives accessing the building.
Security & Safety

2022 wITSA.
Fire Safety
The fire system is also well equipped in that in the
event of a fire, delegates can be assured of their
safety. Instructions on precautionary measures are
placed at all strategic areas of the venue, where
delegates and other visitors can get information
on what to do in the event of a peril.
Fire extinguishing equipment are placed in every
meeting room and hall ways of the facility and the
fire exits are on every floor in the entire building.
Delegates can thereby be at ease as their security
shall not be compromised as far as their Stay at
the center is concerned.
The fire assembly point are strategically placed at
the compound where every person entering the
facility can see it and if an alarm is sounded, they
can easily access these points.
Delegates need not to worry about their safety
in the event of fire as fire drills are usually
conducted after every three months as a
precautionary measure.
Medical Emergencies
During the period of the 10th WTO Ministerial
Conference, KICC shall make arrangements
with qualified medical personnel to provide
emergency medical services as well as two
fully equiped stand-by ambulances

Conferencing in Kenya
GReeN coNVeNTIoNS MeAN so much to Kenya. Conservation
of the environment intertwines
with the livelihood and survival
as well as existence of nearly
all other features of the earth surface. In
light of the various aspects that contribute
to the destruction of the environment such
as deforestation, poor management of waste
disposal, poor knowledge of farm management,
depletion of natural resources and general
population growth there have been vast efforts
and strategies that have been put together in
order to contribute at least basely to the global
sustainability of our nations as a whole.
Green
70
2022 wITSA.
Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty. “ Albert Einstein”
In Kenya most conventions take this seriously in
the path of the betterment of our environments
and general living standards as a whole. As
global warming continues to become a harsh
reality, Kenya like any other country is taking
climate change very seriously. Local scientists
have had rare opportunities to share with their
counterparts around the world matters related
to Health, Environment and Climate change.
Kenya is also the only country in the developing
world to host the United Nations Environmental
Programme (UNEP) head quarters and Kenya
then has a responsibility to play a leading
role in developing its Meetings Incentives
Conference Events (MICE) industry supporting
wholly the mission of green conferencing. As
a country within the East African region and
conference market, Kenya has an expertise
in producing conferences that are of high
quality and provide networking opportunities
for delegates, sponsors and partners. Kenya
offers events and hosts congresses that create
micro-market places for utilities, developers,
investors, suppliers and policy makers to meet,
do business and develop partnerships.
The Kenyatta International Convention Centre
(KICC), for instance an Iconic meeting center
in the city of Nairobi-the capital city of Kenya,
has not been left behind on the venture of
green meetings. KICC is absolutely clear about
the value of green meetings and that is why
it strives to be at the forefront in addressing
issues arising from climate change.
The Centre has held numerous major world
summits to discuss matters related to the
environment both locally and internationally
and just recently, KICC played a crucial role in
bringing the world together to fight climate
change during the Earth Hour 2009, which
was hosted successfully, to support the green
initiative.
Other factors contributing to the support of
hosting green meetings include the use of solar
power to light up meeting grounds at night,
separation of waste disposal bins between
three, recyclable, non recyclable and food
wastes. Planting trees to re-afforest as a CSR
practice among various others that will better
improve our environment and boost its overall
sustainability.
