FALL 2018 PEN SNAPSHOT

01

The Peer Education Network planned a variety of exciting and engaging events for students, faculty, and staff during fall semester. To kick off the school year, PEN hosted an ice cream social for current and prospective Peer Educators as a welcome back celebration. After the ice cream social, students were urged to attend workshops on metacognition led by Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire, Director Emerita of the LSU Center for Academic Success. In partnership with CET&L over 100 students attended Dr. McGuire's presentation. In late September, Jullien Gordon author of "101 Things To Do Before You Graduate" was invited to speak to all faculty, advisors, staff, students and Peer Educators about motivation and leadership. The PEN annual tailgate was hosted over homecoming weekend. All current and alumni Peer Educators were invited back to share a festive morning filled with food and music before the football game against Tulane. In late October, PEN hosted a round-table open to all staff, faculty, and advisors to share information about the Peer Education Attribute. The Peer Education Attribute provides a way to make peer educator experiences visible on the academic transcript and records and recognizes the educational value that select peer educator experiences provide to students during their undergraduate career.

PEN Training Modules

Peer Education Attribute A course attribute has been created for Peer Education that can be applied to qualified courses. This Peer Education attribute provides a way to make peer educator experiences visible on the academic transcript and records and recognizes the educational value that select peer educator experiences provide to students during their undergraduate career. The course attribute is currently being used for Lindner College of Business PACE Leaders, Learning Commons Peer Leaders, and University Honors Program Gateway Peer Leaders. In addition, new for fall 2019, all Lindner College of Business Undergraduate Teaching Assistantships BA 4098 will have the attribute. To learn more about the Peer Education attribute contact Jennifer Lewis at [email protected].

The two newest modules are now available! PEN and Student Affairs staff have worked diligently with the Gender, Equity, and Inclusion; Clery; and LGBTQ+ Offices to introduce our newest and final two modules in the Peer Educator Module Training Curriculum. One module developed for Peer Educators introduces them to Title IX and Clery policies and reporting standards, as well as the different protocol for the two policies relative to student employees. Completing this module meets students’ Clery training requirements and can be followed by a shortened, position-specific in-person training to meet Title IX training requirements. Our second module introduces students to the importance of inclusive language when working with LGBTQ+ populations, and is intended to cover the same material as the traditional Ally Training offered via the LGBTQ+ Center. To learn more about the training modules, please reach out to Lauren Clark at [email protected].

The Peer Education Network partnered with the Division of Student Affairs to produce a series of online training modules intended to assist with the training of Peer Educators. Modules are available on the following topics: FERPA
