We are a small 14–19 Studio College based

in the heart of Aston. When we are full, we

will have no more than 300 students. The

Studio College offers a vibrant learning

experience combining GCSEs, A Levels

and vocational qualifications, including our

specialism of Hospitality and Catering at

Level 2 and 3. We believe in inspiring our

students to be ‘the best they can be’ so that

they reach their potential academically and

also develop the social skills and personal

qualities, which are so vital for their future

life and career.

We believe that KHCSC is a special

place. A Studio College at the heart of

the community, working with the local

community. We are forward looking, and

have a unique 21st Century curriculum

offering that combines technology with

traditional educational values and has a

focus on the learning by doing approach.

Challenging and engaging lessons will

inspire and motivate students to achieve

their potential. All our students, at both Key

Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, will undertake

work experience every week and will

develop an insight into the world of work,

while at the same time achieving their

academic potential.

Students at KHCSC will also cultivate

their enterprise skills. Working with our

partner employers will develop in students

an understanding of the world of work

and more importantly, their personal

employability skills. We will prepare our

students not only for their working life but

also for their future.

Welcome to Kajans Hospitality & Catering Studio College (KHCSC). Kajans Women’s

Enterprise, as the sponsor of KHCSC, have a great deal of experience of providing

high quality learning opportunities for young people. This, coupled with our excellent

relationships with both local and regional businesses gives us a real insight into some of the

challenges that both employers and young people face.

The Studio College offers a great opportunity to provide quality education in a supportive

environment and with just 300 students KHCSC has the chance to deliver individually

tailored curriculum and specialist work placements. KHCSC works to

value each student regardless of ability and background and runs a

Studio College where respect and discipline provide the cornerstone

for sustainable relationships between students, employers and staff.

Students of KHCSC are set to have a profound impact in Birmingham

and the UK, having achieved academically and their personal best in the

world of work. Through each cohort of students KHCSC will build sustainable

partnerships with local employers who provide placements that lead to

employment and self-employment opportunities in a growing sector. KHCSC

A message from the Principal A very warm welcome to Kajans Hospitality & Catering Studio College.

The Kajans Hospitality & Catering Studio College teaches the core national curriculum

subjects and offers the same academic qualifications as a traditional school. In addition, our

students gain vocational and workplace qualifications and develop the skills and qualities

needed for a wide range of employment opportunities. This gives them the widest possible

range of options for the next stage of their lives.

Key Stage 4 students work towards GCSEs in English, mathematics, science and an ICT

qualification, plus BTECs and vocational options. Key Stage 5 students are able to choose

from a selection of higher level academic and vocational options and gain valuable, paid work

experience. However, what makes our Studio College unique is not what is delivered but how

it is delivered. We have moved away from traditional methods of subject delivery and have

our curriculum taught partly through enterprise and community projects both in the Studio

College and in the surrounding community.

We have ensured that KHCSC is supported by a range of leading Birmingham and regional

employers and other key stakeholders. Through their considerable combined experience they

all bring and with the additional range of opportunities they provide to learn and develop,

our students have the best possible chances of finding exciting progression pathways into

the future.

On leaving the Studio College, students will have Level 2, Level 3 and workplace

qualifications. They have a range of progression routes available to them including access to

apprenticeships, high quality employment and the opportunity to go on to university or open

their own business.

approach to learning, which includes teaching through enterprise projects and work. This approach

ensures students’ learning is rooted in the real world, helping them to develop the critical thinking,

creation and the development of young entrepreneurs, whilst becoming an exemplary springboard

for new business ventures in the local economy.

Our approach to learning is based on the national Studio School model, providing a learning experience unlike any other. Studio Schools and Colleges are a new type of state school model, designed to equip young people with the academic grounding, knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed in life and work.

All studentsAll students in KHCSC meet frequently with a ‘Learning Coach’ who works with them to

identify and meet personal targets, helping them to tailor the curriculum to their individual

needs and aspirations. Learning Coaches support students through one-to-one meetings,

group coaching sessions and practical learning.

There is a varied programme of sport and leisure options for all students and extended

creative learning and social activities that they can access.

The KHCSC site is easily accessible and near several major transport routes that go across

Birmingham. The main Studio College building houses the more academic teaching and

learning activities and provides a well resourced base for the tutor groups and staff teams.

Our Fantastic Facilities

In addition to the ICT rich classrooms, the site contains our assembly hall, science laboratories,

business studies centre, library, creative workspace and drama studio, enabling us to deliver

the range of GCSEs and other qualifications outlined earlier. The site has an exceptional range

of accommodation that enables KHCSC to provide an outstanding student experience.

On site is a dining hall, with a large commercial training kitchen and a second teaching kitchen,

as well as a separate banqueting hall. This building also houses a commercial restaurant, which

sits prominently on the corner of two streets and can be accessed without disrupting the rest

of the Studio College.

To facilitate the students’ transition to the commercial world, a Young Entrepreneur Centre

will be located on site from September 2014, so students who choose to set up a business

can benefit from a mentoring programme to guide them. The centre will contain

entrepreneurial ‘incubator’ spaces, ranging in size to accommodate business growth.

This fantastic combination of facilities gives our students a

unique learning experience which, coupled with their work

placement, will ensure they make a successful transition

onto their chosen progression pathway at age 18.

Subsidised Travel Arrangements‘KHCSC students will be receiving a discounted

bus travel rate for their journeys to and from

the Studio College and for journeys they have

to complete during the day. This will include

travel in connection with their enterprise and

community projects and journeys to and from

their work placement.’

area. Crucially, older students receive

remuneration for their work, earning a

proper wage. This will ensure they are valued

as employees by the businesses in which

they work.

Admissions ArrangementsKajans Hospitality & Catering Studio College is fully compliant with the Schools Admissions

Code 2012 and the Appeals Code 2012. The admission arrangements for the Studio College,

for the year 2013/2014 are 30 students in year 10 and 60 in Year 12 and in following years 50

pupils in Year 10 and 100 in Year 12. KHCSC will admit that number of students in the relevant

age group each year if sufficient applications are received. At capacity we will have

300 students.

Where the number of applications for admission is greater than the published admissions

number, applications will be considered against the oversubscription criteria set out in our

Admissions Policy available at www.khcsc.co.uk. If there are no places immediately available,

pupils will be placed on a waiting list in an order that follows the oversubscription criteria.

KHCSC is fully inclusive and welcomes applications from all young people. The organisation

of support and individual education plans for pupils with Special Educational Needs and

Disabilities is fully outlined in our Special Educational Needs and Inclusion policies, which are

PoliciesKHCSC does not tolerate any kind of bullying and expects staff and students to treat each other with dignity and respect. We take all allegations of bullying seriously and our approach to dealing with real or suspected bullying is outlined in our Anti-bullying Policy.

We also have a comprehensive Behaviour Policy, which clearly describes our expectation

of excellent student behaviour and lists the rewards and sanctions we use to help students

achieve this. Exclusion is seen as the very last resort after every avenue has been thoroughly

explored and our aspiration is to have no permanent exclusions from KHCSC.

To promote a safe environment for pupils,

our selection and recruitment policy

includes all checks on staff and regular

volunteers’ suitability, including Disclosure

and Barring Service checks (previously

CRB), in accordance with current legislation.

We take Health and Safety very seriously

Evidence consistently shows that employers

are concerned about key skills gaps in the

British economy. Surveys have highlighted

a lack of employability skills amongst school

leavers and the majority of employers say

the development of employability skills in

young people should be the top priority

for education.

In a competitive and uncertain economy,

young people need to be able to think

creatively and build resilience so they can

respond effectively to rapidly changing

circumstances.

The CREATE curriculum for work and life

skills will run throughout all the projects and

other extended learning. Individual students

will have targets for their own personal

development linked to the CREATE areas

and these will be shared with all staff and the

employers who provide curriculum support

and work placements.

In addition each student will have a personal

health and fitness programme including

sports, film, creative and performing arts

activities. Our curriculum delivery and

learning opportunities will be enhanced

by technology that will allow students to

link their learning to their real lives. We will

ensure every student is competent and

confident in the use of technology including

the specialist equipment they are likely to

meet in the workplace.

The CREATE skills framework (Communication, Relating to people, Enterprise, Applied skills, Thinking and Emotional intelligence) is unique to Studio Schools and Colleges.

Uniform and Dress Code Proposed Term Dates 2013 – 2014

At KHCSC we have a very simple uniform for Key stage 4, which is practical yet smart. The Studio College colours are orange and black and all students are required to wear black trousers or a black knee length skirt with a black blazer and white shirt or blouse. Further details of our uniform are given in our Uniform Policy.

All Key Stage 5 students (post 16) are expected to dress smartly and follow the KHCSC Dress

Code. Students should be dressed appropriately for the office environment, as if they were

at work. This includes strictly no jeans or trainers to be worn. The type of clothes students

wear at their work placement will vary according to the nature of the employer. All students

are provided with appropriate protective clothing whenever they are engaged in practical

activities in or around the Studio College.

Admissions via the local Authority close on the 31st October each year. Parents who apply via the Local Authority will be notified of the decision on National Offers Day, 1st March. If you do not live in Birmingham you will need to call your own Local Authority for an application form.

Attendance ArrangementsThe KHCSC day runs from 8.30am to 4.00pm with an additional hour from 4.00pm to

5.00pm for creative and physical enrichment activities. This increases learning and skills

development opportunities and gives better chances of success in studies and work

placements. There is an optional breakfast club from 8.00 to 8.30am. Lunch and break times

will total 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Learning session times are varied especially when the students are working on projects in the

community. More formal learning sessions are either 1 or 2 hours long.

The school year covers 39 weeks across 3 terms for our KS4 students but KHCSC will be

supporting KS5 in their workplace for 48 weeks a year. KS5 students are able to choose their

holiday dates by negotiation with the staff and their employer.

On transfer to the workplace at the end of their time at the Studio College, our students are

already used to an extended day and the demands of different employers. The extended day

gives students opportunities to study options that are not in the core but are important for

their chosen profession and other qualifications in their personalised timetable.
