Welcome to an extremely exciting year at Knowsley Community College.

The college in now located in a new purpose designed £32 million campus which provides the latest in technology and skills spaces, enabling you to progress on to Higher Education or work. As well as relaxing and comfortable social study areas, there are state of the art classrooms, workshops, studios and equipment that allow you to learn in a flexible and supported way.

New for 2016/17, our Hair and Beauty Academy in partnership with celebrity hairdresser, Lee Stafford, will be based at our main campus, as will our Institute of Advanced Manufacturing and Technology – a centre focussed on delivering the skills needed by the businesses in and around the Liverpool City Region, with national and international interests.

These, as well as our industry standard equipment and expert tutors, provide you with real-life sector experience – a key attribute that employers and universities are seeking.

In 2016, national performance data identified us as the best college in the Liverpool City Region for our students’ performance, meaning that by studying with us, you get the very best chance for success and progression.

This year also marks the opening of our specialist centre, the Northern Logistics Academy, based at our Kirkby campus and co-located in St Helens.

The Academy is supported by regional, national and global logistics companies and delivers sector specific qualifications including supply chain

management, storage and distribution, and freight and transport. Its exclusive access to local logistics organisations and realistic work environments allow you to gain a real insight into the fast-paced sector. As a KCC student, you will directly benefit from this close association and active promotion of employment opportunities.

New investmentsNorthern Logistics Academy – Moving Skills Forward

The Northern Logistics Academy, new for 2016/17, is a brand new specialist skills and training centre,

born out of a collaboration between Knowsley Community College and St Helens College.

The Academy delivers qualifications ranging from Entry Level through to Foundation Degrees and apprenticeships, focusing on three main areas of training;

Its innovative curriculum offer, developed with and for employers, enables you to gain the sector

skills and advanced knowledge that competitive businesses desire.

Through the industry standard working environments within the Academy and exclusive access to local logistics organisations, you can gain a real insight into the fast-paced sector.

Lee Stafford AcademyCelebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford is bringing his Education Academy to Knowsley. The nationally

acclaimed programme, which teaches students standardised ‘recipes’ for creating innovative styles, will be based at our new campus in fresh, revamped and rebranded salons.

KCC will be working alongside Lee’s handpicked team of trainers, salon owners and hairdressers to bring industry standard skills to the classroom.

Through strong industry links with salons, spas and hotels, students on both apprenticeships and study programmes will have access to valuable work experience and sector insight.

Institute of Advanced Manufacturing and Technology

2016 sees the launch of KCC’s Institute of Advanced Manufacturing and Technology. Formerly our Princess Drive campus,

the Institute will provide a simulated lean manufacturing environment.

IAMTech will include new specialist equipment, as well as advanced qualifications to enable you to gain cutting-edge technical skills.

The portfolio of new equipment, which has been designed and tailored by local industry, includes:

VIRTUAL WELDING TRAINING SYSTEM

The VRTEX® 360 is a best-in-class, advanced level welding training system. It supports safe, waste free training and can be used to develop high class skills both in the classroom and at the workplace.

CAD SUITE

Product design using state of the art technology is a skill necessary for future design engineers. Our CAD suite, updated with high resolution wide screen monitors and an updated 3D printer, provides state of the art training for our future engineers.

FARO ARM

Technology from the FARO arm permits high-precision 3D measurement, imaging and comparison of parts within production and quality assurance processes.

CNC MACHINE

Highly skilled operators will be required to support the design engineers. We have therefore invested in an automated press brake and a high-end CNC machine to develop these highly sought after talents.

Working alongside your vocational qualification or apprenticeship, as well as your English and Maths development, Skills For Success is what sets you apart as a Knowsley Community College student.

By working both online and with your tutor in one-to-one sessions, you will enhance expertise including entrepreneurship, employability, CV building, budget management and interviewing skills. Our team of Youth Workers are also on hand to help with Skills For Success activities.

public at extremely reasonable prices.

Your study programme 1. Your Qualification This will be a vocational course.

2. English and Maths developmentEnglish and Maths are often valued as two of the most important skills by employers and universities – we therefore want our students to excel in these subjects:

// Students who have not achieved a C at GCSE Level will continue to develop these skills with a team of dedicated tutors at college as part of their study programme.

SUCCESS STORY

Lewis Webster

Lewis studied Art & Design and has progressed on to a Foundation Diploma in the subject, continuing his studies at KCC. Lewis, who also designs and sells his own t-shirts, said he thoroughly enjoyed his time at the college and plans to next progress onto university.

What’s it all about?

For those with an appreciation for aesthetics and a personality that’s heavy with creative flair, studying Art & Design can lead to a range of careers. Knowsley Community College’s study programmes allow you to express your creativity and specialise in areas such as Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography and more.

Fashion DesignerFashion Designers work on the design of clothing and fashion ranges. They typically specialise in one area of design, such as sportswear, children’s wear, footwear or accessories. Depending on their level of responsibility and the company they work for, Designers may work to their own brief or be given a brief to work towards, with specifications relating to colour, fabric and budget.

Design Assistants may start on a salary of around £16,000 per year.

Graphic DesignerGraphic Designers are hired by clients to provide impact design for a range of uses including TV, magazines, product packaging, shop fit outs and more. With the rise of social media and online marketing, the demand for graphic designers has never been greater.

A Junior Graphic Designer can start at around £15,000 a year, with a Senior Designer achieving in the region of £60,000 + per year.

PhotographerA large proportion of professional Photographers are self-employed. The remainder work for a variety of employers, including creative businesses, publishers and photographic agencies, or in the education or public sector.

A Photographer can start on a salary between £12,000 and £22,000.

Illustrator An Illustrator uses creative skills in art and design to communicate a story, message or idea. They usually specialise in a particular design medium, such as drawing, photography or digital illustration.

Starting salaries for Illustrators are in the range of £14,000 to £19,000 a year.

During your study programme you will have access to outstanding facilities including a professional photographic studio, a traditional dark room, film and lighting studio and a 3D print workshop. You will also go on trips to see both local and national galleries, as well as having the chance to showcase your work to the public.

ENGLISH AND MATHS

English and Maths are often valued as two of the most important skills by employers and universities, therefore as part of your study programme at KCC, you will enhance these skills and learn how to apply them to the Art and Design sector.

Level 2 BTEC First Extended Certificate in Art and DesignWHAT IS THE STUDY PROGRAMME ABOUT?During your time on the study programme you will gain a range of practical skills through drawing, printmaking, painting, 3D work and photography. The qualification is highly practical and is enhanced with trips to museums and galleries to gain an awareness of a range of traditional and contemporary artists to inform your artwork. You will engage in related work experience that will help you prepare for a career in Art and Design.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?The majority of assessment will be through tutor-led internal assessments with a smaller proportion of assessment set externally by the awarding body.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSYou will need at least 3 GCSEs or equivalent at grade D including English and/or Maths or a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Art and DesignWHAT IS THE STUDY PROGRAMME ABOUT?This qualification is equivalent to 3 A Levels; it covers a wide range of areas within Art and Design and has a mix of practical and theoretical units. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in a wide range of areas including ceramics, photography and product design, whilst enhancing your knowledge through trips to museums and galleries, and even putting on your own exhibition.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?You will be assessed through both practical work and written assignments.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSYou will need at least 5 GCSEs including a grade C in English or a relevant Level 2 qualification (at merit or distinction level where applicable) with a GCSE grade C in English.

HOW LONG WILL THE STUDY PROGRAMME LAST?Two years

Beauty Therapy

Make-up ArtistAs a Make-up Artist, you would be responsible for ensuring that models, performers and presenters have suitable make-up and hairstyles before they appear in front of cameras or an audience. This could involve producing special effect make-up for an actor in a horror film, or perhaps effective make-up for a news reader.

Make-up Artists can usually charge between £200 and £300 a day, depending on experience.

Spa TherapistA Spa Therapist can be asked to perform a range of treatments for both genders, in a relaxing environment. At a more senior level, they may also be asked to introduce new and innovative treatments to make the spa stand out from its competitors.

You could expect to earn between £18,000 and £28,000 per year.

Nail TechnicianNail Technicians are responsible for providing a range of nail based treatments, from the basic shape and polish manicure, to the more advanced, including repairing and rebuilding damaged nails. The role can often be creative, with many clients now requesting nail art and suggestions for colour schemes.

Nail Technicians can begin to earn £12,000 per year.

Salon ManagerSalon Managers not only get involved with the day to day running of the salon, but they can often be responsible for the marketing, finance and training of the business.

Salon Managers’ salaries will vary depending on the size of the organisation, but a starting salary is usually around £25,000.

Restaurant Manager As a Restaurant Manager you would be responsible for ensuring that restaurants operate efficiently and profitably, as well as maintaining high standards of food, service, and health and safety.

Restaurant Managers can earn between £20,000 and £40,000 per year.

Personal ChefAs a Personal Chef, your job role wholly depends of the needs of your client – this may involve sourcing the rarest ingredients, travelling the world to cook for large parties, or simply cooking evening family meals.

The salary will depend on the number of clients you have, however some Chefs can earn around £30,000 a year.

Pastry ChefPastry Chefs are responsible for all those decadent and impressive desserts and sweets you find in hotels and restaurants. They are experts in creativity and precision.

Pastry Chefs on average earn around £20,000 per year.

ButcherButchers sell meat and poultry through individual shops, supermarkets or local markets. Specialist butchers may also make their own meat products such as sausages, burgers and pies.

Network specialisms can include computer, VoIP and security.

A Network Engineer can earn between £19,000 and £50,000 per year.

Computer Games DeveloperGames Developers are involved in the creation and production of games for a variety of media including games consoles, arcade games and apps. You may be involved in user experience and interface design, animating characters and objects, or recording audio.

IT Help Desk CoordinatorHelp Desk Coordinators are responsible for ensuring a company’s IT systems run smoothly – this can often involve having to react quickly and effectively to ensure that no customers or staff are compromised.

Web DeveloperWeb Developers build and maintain websites and web applications. CarpenterCarpenters and Joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings for many different purposes – including construction sites, shop fit outs, restaurant and bars, bespoke houses, and building sets for film and TV. If you enjoy working with wood and want to put your practical skills to good use, this could be an ideal career for you.

Carpenters can start out at around £18,000 a year.

Property DeveloperProperty Developers can be self-employed or working for an organisation. Their role is to re-develop a property, whether turning an old shop into residential flats, or transforming a derelict building to its former self, Property Developers need a keen eye for detail and good budget management skills.

Your salary will depend on whether you are self-employed or not, however some developers can earn up to £80,000 a year.

PlumberPlumbers fit, service and repair hot and cold water systems, and heating systems in homes and businesses. They also work with gas fires and cookers. If you want a varied job that makes good use of your practical skills and takes you out and about, this could be perfect for you.

Starting salaries for newly qualified Plumbers can be between £18,000 and £22,000 a year.

Site ManagerA Site Manager will oversee operations on a day-to-day basis, and ensure that work is done safely, on time and within budget and to the right quality standards.

Kris graduated from Liverpool John Moores and set up his own television and commercial production company, Keyhole Productions, based in Liverpool. As well as running a successful business, Kris was also nominated as Best Young Entrepreneur of The Year.

Creative Media

Advertising ExecutiveAdvertising Executives are responsible for the coordination of successful and creative advertising campaigns – working with creative teams to plan and implement campaigns, as well as working on budget and strategy.

Advertising Executives can begin earn £18,000 a year, with some more experienced Executives earning £35,000 per year.

AnimatorAn Animator produces multiple images called frames, which when sequenced together create animation. These can then be translated into computer games, films and cartoons.

Animators can earn around £15,000 at entry level, with some moving up to £35,000 per year.

Film EditorAs a Film or Video Editor, you’ll be responsible for assembling recorded raw material into a finished product that’s suitable for broadcasting. The material may include camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphics and special effects. This is a key role in the post-production process and your skills can determine the quality and delivery of the final product. You’ll usually work closely with the director to achieve the desired end result.

Starting salaries for Assistant Editors employed by a television or post-production studio are in the region of £18,000 to £25,000.

Graphic DesignerGraphic Designers are hired by clients to provide impact design for a range of uses including TV, magazines, product packaging, shop fit outs and more. With the rise of social media and online marketing, the demand for Graphic Designers has never been greater.

A Junior Graphic Designer can start at around £15,000 a year, with a Senior Designer achieving in the region of £60,000 + per year.

The University awarded the scholarship to Meagan for her dedication to the charity Making a Difference (MAD), with whom she has worked with for the past 3 years, holding various fundraising events to raise money for Ukrainian orphanages.

Nursery AssistantAs a Nursery Assistant, you will be working with babies and young children from birth to five years in childcare settings, making sure that the children under your care develop and learn in a safe and supportive environment.

Nursery Assistants can start on a salary of £12,000 per year.

Special Needs AssistantsSpecial Needs Assistants help children with a wide range of learning, physical or behavioural difficulties, to help them learn, develop and progress in areas such as communication, numeracy and literacy.

Child MinderIf you love children and like the idea of working from home, this could be perfect for you. Child Minders look after children in their own home, whilst the children’s parents are at work or studying. They could look after babies and children under five during the day, or older children after school and in the school holidays.

Electrical EngineerElectrical Engineers design, build and maintain electrical control systems, machinery and equipment, so you’ll need an eye for detail. You could be working on projects including transport networks and signalling, solar panelling and lift systems.

Electrical Engineers can earn a starting salary of around £20,000 and progress to £55,000 per year.

Electrical InstallerAs an Installer, you would be responsible for adjusting, repairing or replacing defective wiring and relays in ignition, lighting, air-conditioning, and safety control systems, using electricians’ tools.

As a KCC student, you will study in our industry standard Lee Stafford Salons, located at our brand new campus. With state of the art equipment, and expert tutors, you will be taught the celebrity hairdresser’s exclusive recipes for success.

Colour TechnicianA Colour Technician specialises in all things linking to colouring hair, whether this is mixing the perfect shade to complement a client’s skin tone, or testing client’s hair and skin for allergies to colourant. The job also involves a high level of consultancy skills to work with your client to get the best results.

Colour Technician’s can start on a salary of £20,000 per year.

StylistSalon Stylists are responsible for providing a variety of hair care treatments and may be hired to work for various occasions including weddings, photo shoots and in television. A stylist may work as part of a salon, or work freelance.

Depending on the place of work, Stylists can earn, on average, £22,000 per year.

BarberA barber is a professional who cuts, trims, and styles hair for primarily male clients, though many women with shorter hairstyles opt to go to these professionals too. Most barbers also provide facial hair maintenance, custom shaves and other men’s grooming services.

The average wage for a barber is around £8 per hour.

Salon ManagerSalon Managers not only get involved with the day-to-day running of the salon, but they can often be responsible for the marketing, finance and training of the business.

Paramedics can earn between £21,000 and £35,000 per year.

Healthcare AssistantHealthcare Assistants help with the day-to-day care of patients, either in hospitals or in patients’ own homes. This may include health checks, helping with daily cleanliness and assisting with nutrition.

Music TherapistMusic Therapists use music creatively to help their clients address social, emotional or physical difficulties, including eating disorders, anxiety, behavioural difficulties, addiction and communication disorders. They also work with those who want to gain an insight into themselves and how they relate to others.

A starting salary for a Music Therapist can be between £25,000 and £35,000 per year.

ComposerMusic Composers write and arrange scores for both instrumental and vocal music. Most composers specialise in a certain field, such as on stage in operas and musicals, or for the camera, in television and film.

The salary of a Composer will differ depending on what field of work they are in, however the average salary is around £29,000 per year per year.

ProducerMusic Producers guide the production of a record by coaching the musicians, advising in pre-production sessions, and directing the in-studio recording and production process.

Set DesignerSet Designers design and create the overall look and feel of a theatre, television or film production. You would often be given a brief by a director or producer and expected to transform a bare studio into a specific scene.

Level 2 BTEC First Extended Certificate in Performing ArtsWHAT IS THE STUDY PROGRAMME ABOUT?This practical programme mirrors the working world of performing arts; you will take part in projects and workshops, developing your acting, dancing and singing skills. Know how to dream big Career opportunities in Science

Forensic ScientistForensic Scientists provide scientific evidence for use in courts of law to support the prosecution or defence in criminal investigations. Their primary role is searching and examining a crime scene to extract trace materials such as tyre marks, paint fragments, fibres and blood.

A starting salary for a Forensic Scientist starts at around £20,000 per year.

MicrobiologistMicrobiologists study organisms that cause infections and help to prevent, diagnose and control infections as they identify and characterise organisms. They are able to comment on effective treatment and can help to develop tests to diagnose infectious diseases.

Microbiologists can begin to earn between £21,000 and £27,000 per year.

Biomedical EngineerBiomedical engineers apply engineering principles and materials technology to healthcare. This can include researching, designing and developing medical products such as joint replacements or robotic surgical instruments, designing or modifying equipment for clients with special needs in a rehabilitation setting, or managing the use of clinical equipment in hospitals and the community.

Salaries for Medical Engineering Technicians range from £21,478 to £27,901 per year.

MeteorologistsMeteorologists predict the weather and study the causes of particular weather conditions using information obtained from the land, sea and upper atmosphere. They use computerised and mathematical models to make short and long-range forecasts concerning weather and climate patterns.

Salaries for Trainee Operational Meteorologists start at around £20,000 per year.

Diploma in Sport, Jack has gone onto to study Sport Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University. Jack says that he really enjoyed his time at KCC, especially the new sports and experiences he was able to try out.

What’s it all about?

We’ve worked with Liverpool Football Club, Wigan Warriors, the Liverpool Marathon and more – meaning a study programme in Sport or Public Services at Knowsley Community College is the ideal opportunity to gain first-hand experience as well as developing your classroom-based skills.

Know how to dream big Career opportunities in Sport and Public Services

PE TeacherPhysical Education (PE) teachers work in secondary schools and colleges, teaching sport and fitness to young people. In this job you’ll need to be physically fit and know how the human body works. You’ll need to get on well with young people and be able to motivate them to take part in sport.

PE Teachers earn around £22,000 per year.

Sports TherapistAs a Sports Therapist, you would be responsible for helping prevent injuries, recognise, manage and treat them should they occur, and then rehabilitate the participant back to full fitness. You could work as part of a sports injury clinic or even directly a sports club.

Sports Therapists can earn between £17,000 and £28,000 per year.

Police Officer Police Officers keep law and order, investigate crime and support crime prevention. If you like the idea of making communities safer and want a varied and challenging job, this could be the ideal career for you.

Starting salary for a Police Officer is £19,000 per year.

Prison OfficerIf you can create good working relationships with all kinds of different people, and have a firm but fair approach, this job might suit you. As a Prison Officer, you would supervise inmates in prisons, remand centres and young offenders’ institutions.

SUCCESS STORY

Danielle IrwinDanielle completed Level 1 and Level 2 in Travel and Tourism at KCC before progressing onto the Aviation and Cabin Crew programme in which she excelled achieving Merit/Distinction in all her coursework. Whilst on her course Danielle also acquired a voluntary Ambassador position at Liverpool Airport in which she assisted passengers through their airport journey. She has now successfully gained employment at Liverpool John Lennon Airport as a Passenger Service Agent.

Flight AttendantAs a Flight Attendant, you are responsible for the safety and well-being of your passengers. This can include ensuring that the plane is clean and well stocked, as well as preparing food and drink. In some extreme instances, this may mean performing First Aid and preparing for emergency landings.

Flight Attendants earn around £22,000 per year.

Tourist Information Centre ManagerTourist Information Centre Managers oversee the different services that provide information and advice about what to see and do in a certain area. They may be responsible for running events, marketing, selling, networking and research.

A typical salary for a Tourist Information Centre Manager is between £16,000 and £20,000 per year.

Tour ManagerIf you want to combine your love of travel with work, then being a Tour Manager could be an ideal career choice. You would be responsible for managing the travel arrangements of holiday makers and business clients, making sure everything runs according to plan.

A starting salary for a tour manager is on average £15,000 per year.

Event ManagerIf you enjoy planning, organising and meeting people, this could be just what you are looking for. Events Managers are responsible for organising and running all kinds of events. You would control the whole project, from planning at the start to running the event on the day.
