About the Institute

In the year 1960 DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi resolved unanimously in its meeting to establish DAV College at Abohar in the sacred memory of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj and Mahatma Hansraj, the founder of DAV Movement. The founder Principal of this college was Sh. N.D. Grover who left no stone unturned in raising this institute to the peak of glory. Sh. V.N. Chawla, Sh. M.L. Sekhri, Sh. V.B. Mehra, Sh. H.R. Gandhar, Dr. B.C. Josan and Dr. B.B. Sharma have been the visionaries par excellence in this chain of principals whose untiring and inspiring efforts helped this college make a mark in every field. These illustrious Principals and renowned administrators who with their rich experience and wide vision made remarkable contribution in the sphere of education and pubic life. Presently college has been traversing new tracks under the leadership of Dr. S.K. Arora and this institute is scaling new heights of success, name and fame.

Identity CardOn Joining the college, each student is issued an identity card bearing his/her photograph, name and roll number/pupin number. Students are expected to bring their identity cards with them to the college. Books are issued from the library and students are admitted to the reading room and house examination on production of the identity card. Identity card is also necessary for participating in cultural and social activities and for claiming railway/bus concession.

General Instructions Form must be submitted in the office as per schedule and acknowledgement of the same must be received from the office. No form will be accepted after the date specified. Students are required to note the following points while filling up the admission forms :1. The form must be filled up in the student’s own

handwriting.2. The spellings of the name of student, father and

mother must be the same as recorded in the cert ificate / DMC of the Matriculat ion examination passed.

3. Every candidate must write the name of his / her mother along with the name of the father in the stipulated column.

4. Date of birth must be recorded properly with due proof.

5. As and when the Registration Number PUPIN is issued by P.U. Chandigarh, it must be filled in the stipulated column.

6. Affix one photograph of the passport size at the specified place and enclose one with the form.

7. Every candidate must give a certificate that he / she has never been disqualified by any Board / Body / Council / University in any examination.

8. The student must specify the category for reservat ion in appl icat ion. Benefit of reservation shall not be granted if it is not claimed in the admission form.

2. Original migration certificate is required to be submitted by the candidates who have passed their lower qualifying examination from any board/ university other than P.S.E.B./ Panjab University.

3. Character Certificate from the last institute attended must be attached in original.

4. An attested copy of the DMC of last examination passed.

Conditions for Admission1. Seats are limited. Admission will be strictly on

merit basis. 2. Every admission from B.A., B.Sc., B.Com. - I, to

M.A. classes shall be provisional subject to the approval / confirmation of admission by P.U. Chandigarh. The college shall not be responsible if P.U. does not approve / confirm the admission of any student due to wrong or incomplete particulars submitted by him / her or for want of any requisite document. Therefore before filling in the form, the candidate must ensure that he / she is eligible for admission to the particular class. If any ineligibility is detected at any stage, the admission shall be cancelled and the college shall not be responsible in any case.

3. Admission of students placed in compartment in one subject will be done as per the latest rules / instructions from P.U. Chandigarh.

4. The Principal may refuse admission to any applicant without assigning any reason.

5. If a student is found ineligible at any stage, his/her admission shall be cancelled and he / she will have no claim whatever to :

(i) refund of dues paid. (ii) Stay in the hostel. (iii) Appearing in the examination. (iv) Any other privilege available to the bonafide

Gap Year An affidavit in duplicate by each candidate having gap year seeking admission to the College to the effect that he / she was not disqualified by any Board / Body / Council/ University and he / she was not already registered with the Panjab University (whenever applicable), must be submitted. In case of re-admission after a long spell, the candidate must quote his/her old Registration number of Panjab University.

Compartment Case The candidate who has been placed under compartment / re-appear in one subject only with at least 20% marks in the subject in which he / she has been placed in compartment in the +2 examination conducted by the Open School/Board in India shall be eligible to seek admission to the Ist year of B.A./B.Sc. (General) /B.Com./B.B.A./B.C.A. course under 10+2+3 system of education, if otherwise eligible, provided he / she passed all the subjects in one attempt except the one in which he/ she was placed under compartment / re-appear and also

he / she fulfills the conditions as are applicable in the case of students who have been placed under compartment in the +2 examination conducted by a Board / Body / Council / University in India. A student of any other University who is placed in compartment in 1st year / 2nd year of B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. / B.C.A. / B.B.A. course is not allowed to join the 2nd year / 3rd year course of the university.

Migration/Deficient Subject/s: A candidate who has passed his / her Ist year or 2nd year examination of B.A. / B.Sc.(General) / B.Com. / B.B.A. / B.C.A. course conducted by another university / college affiliated to another university in India under specific authorization by the university concerned, is allowed to migrate to the college in the 2nd year / 3rd year class, of the respective course on the condition that such a candidate will have to clear the deficient subject/s if any, within the permissible chances.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Immigration if any, shall be allowed as per Panjab University rules and subject to the approval of the University. The migration certificate must be submitted latest by 30th September. Incomplete forms will not be considered.

Refund of College Library & Hostel Security The college library & hostel security will be refunded up to 31st October otherwise shall stand forfeited. Any student getting readmission to the college can get securities adjusted at the time of admission.

Change of Subject /Faculty1. Students may apply for change of subject(s) faculty

by 31st August along with a fee of Rs.50/-. No application for the change of subject(s) after the time limit prescribed by Panjab University will be entertained. The application for the change of subject must be got recommended by the Dean Programming and sanctioned by the Principal and deposited in the General Office.

2. Any student who wants to change from Science stream to Arts shall not be entitled to get refund of Science fee already paid.

3. The change of subject(s) shall be allowed only if : (i) Seats are available and (ii) The application is s i g n e d b y t h e f a t h e r / guardian of the student. 4. The change of subject(s) will be at the risk and responsibility of the student.

House Examination The College shall hold one mid semester examination besides the class tests in every semester to provide the students an opportunity to assess their understanding of the subjects and enable them to make necessary improvement in their studies. The students themselves can watch their progress and anaylse where they stand academically. These examinations are compulsory for all the students as their eligibility to appear in the University Examination is determined on the basis of marks obtained in these examinations. The college honours the toppers of the terminal examinations to encourage for better performance in University Exams on Annual Awards Day.

B.A. (TDC) Part - I (Semester System)

ELIGIBILITYä Any student who wants to seek admission to

B.A. I (General) Course (at +3 stage) should have obtained at least 33% marks in aggregate in all subjects including the marks obtained by him in the subjects of compartment (at least 20% marks in theory and practical) taken up by him at the 10+2 examination of Science, Arts and Commerce faculty.

ä Every candidate admitted to B.A. (TDC) Part - I class shall take up the specified languages or other subjects as compulsory subjects (as prescribed and notified by the university).

ä In case the student is seeking admission to the B.A. Ist year, he should have obtained 33% marks in aggregate in all the subjects including the marks obtained by him in the subject of compartment (Theory & Practical taken together), taken up by him at the 10+2 examination.

ä He / she should clear the compartment in twoconsecutive subsequent chances, failing that they will have to leave the course.

NOTE :1. Persons who have passed Senior Secondary Part II

(10+2) examination from C.B.S.E. (Central Board of Secondary Education), New Delhi but have failed in English Subject shall have to clear the relevant subject in two consecutive subsequent chances, otherwise their admission shall stand cancelled.

2. A student who has been placed in compartment in one subject only at the +2 Examination conducted by a recognized Board / Body / Council / University in India (as per booklet of equivalence of Examination and list circulated) and has obtained at least 20% marks in the subject in which he has been placed in the compartment will be allowed to take admission to Ist year of B.A./B.Sc. subject to the following conditions:

CURRICULUM The B.A. (General) programme of study shall consist of 24 credits (every year of 8 credits), each credit having a value of 100 marks. A subject studied for the whole academic year shall carry 2 credits. All the theory papers and practicals, irrespective of their credit value, shall be studied throughout the academic year. The details of the subjects to be studied in B.A. (General) First year examination, 2015 shall be as under

COMPULSORY SUBJECTS(a) Punjabi or History & Culture of Punjab- 1credit(b) English -1 credit

ELECTIVE SUBJECTSä Any three elective subjects including languages and Elective/ Vocational subject.ä A student is required to take up 3 elective

subjects in all, selecting not more than one subject from any of the following sets of combinations.

1) English / Hindi / Punjabi (Students can opt only one language out of these as an elective subjects)2) Economics 3) History / Mathematics 4) Political Science 5) Sanskrit / Physical Education

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONSä Every student will appear for the same subject combination in the next semester.ä No student can change any Elective Subject in

B.A. II & III as per P.U. rule. Admission to B.A. II and III classes shall be open to a candidate who has passed B.A. I and II examination respectively of PU from this college or any other examination recognised by the PU as equivalent to its B.A.I and II examination respectively. The subjects for B.A. II and III classes will be the same as offered by the student in B.A. I and II respectively.

ä No student can offer Political Science & Maths or Physical Education & Maths.

ä In subjects having pract icals, the theory papers and practicals together will be of 2 credits value. The candidate will have to pass theory and practicals separately. ä Each paper of one credit shall be allocated 3 hours of teaching per week during each academic year. However, for subjects having practicals, three hours of teaching will be allocated to each theory paper and two hours for a practical per week, or as per requirement of the subject concerned.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

PUNJAB HISTORY AND CULTUREFor B.A./B.Com./B.Sc./B.B.A./B.C.A.

The students of the following categories shall be entitled to take up the option of History & Culture of Punjab in lieu of Punjabi as compulsory subject.(i) Students who are not domiciled in Punjab and have not studied Punjabi upto class 10th.(ii) Wards of / and Defence Personnel and Central Government employees whose jobs are transferable on all India basis.(iii) Students can also take add-on course (Punjabi language & culture)

M.A. Hindi / Punjabi / History / Political ScienceNo. of units – 01 for each (Semester System)

ELIGIBILITYM.A. Ist Semester A person who has passed any of the following examinations from Panjab University or from any other recognized university whose examination has been recognized as equivalent to the corresponding examination of the P.U. (Under 10+2+3 system of education) shall be eligible to join the First semester of the M.A. Course.(i) B.A. with Honours in the subject of the Post- Graduate course.

(ii) B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. (General) examination with 50% marks in the aggregate.

(i) B.A.(Pass), B.Sc. (Pass) examination with full subjects obtaining at least 45 % marks in the subjects of Post – Graduate class.(ii) Master 's Degree examinat ion in another subject or another faculty. (iii) For Hindi/Punjabi course a person who after

passing B.A. examination has passed the Prabhakar / Gyani examination respectively securing 45% marks shall also be eligible.

(General degree course) shall be open to a person who has passed 10+2 examination conducted by a recognized Board / Body / Council / University : As per notification of Panjab University, the admission to B.Com.I will be done on merit basis. A student who wants to seek admission to B.Sc.I (Medical, Non-Medical, or Computer Application) must have obtained at least 40% marks as aggregate of all subjects (Gen. English, Gen. Beyond the Classroom

Library The college has a vast, voluminous and well

equipped library that houses about 70,000 books. The

“Lekhram Bhawan” was bui l t w i th a mot to

“swadhyayanma pramadah” i.e. always indulge in self

study.

The library subscribes to about 20 national and

regional news papers. It also provides access to over

3100 e-journals and 75000 e-books through UGC-

INFLIBNET scheme under its nlist programme that

throws open book shelves of reputed international and

national digital libraries at one screen. The students get

individual passwords to avail this scheme at PG level.

There are two big reading halls with a seating

capacity of more than 200 students at one time including

one A.C. hall apart from other user friendly corners and

spaces. The library provides book-bank and internet

facility along with computerized catalogue.

There is colossal collection of reference books. It

also provides open shelf facility. The new arrivals and the

career guidance sections are regularly updated.

The library remains open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The staff is very cooperative to cater to the needs of the

students. The learners are issued a library –cum-identity

card on which they can get books as per the rules of the

library.

BOOK-BANK FACILITY

The book-bank is maintained for meritorious and

needy students and the books are issued for the whole

session.

Any fee concession, stipends, financial assistance,

book-bank facility or any other facility granted by the

college shall be withdrawn in the following cases.

1. Those who have not appeared in and passed

the house tes ts or mid semester exams

(September & December). 2. who have not attended at least 75% of the

lectures delivered up to dated. 3. who have not given all the class assignments . 4. who are found guilty of indiscipline in the

college.

Extra Mural Activities EMA department has been established to hunt the

hidden talent of students in fine arts, dance and music.

India is the land whose traditional art forms are

unparalleled in the world. Deeply rooted to the Indian

ethos, they are mirror to the word that our cultural

heritage is far better than theirs. The objective of EMA is

to acquaint others with this rich culture of India. Every

year, round about the month of September, best

performers are selected in Talent Hunt competitions who

further participate in various youth festivals at Zonal,

Inter-Zonal and Intervarsity level. The student can

participate in innumerable activities.

National Cadet Corps (NCC) The students can join NCC while being in the

College. The courageous, adventurous and physically fit

students can avail his opportunity. There are about 40

parades in an academic year which are held on Sundays

and other holidays. The students can appear for 'B' and

'C' certificates. Apart from these NCC organizes special

guest lectures on various occasions. Cadets are sent to

attend special camps at various outdoor stations. A few

cadets are the pique of the college who have participated

in events like Paragliding, Republic Day Parade etc.

Magazine The college publishes its magazine 'Seemant Jyoti' annually to build substratum for sublimation of creative energy of students. It also acts as a platform for dissemination of ideas. Students can contribute to any of the following sections: English, Hindi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Social Sciences, Sciences, Commerce, Computer, Physical Education, Fine Arts and News. The Magazine exhibits thoughts and ideas of the budding creative artists on diverse themes. There are two student editors for each section who work under the guidance of their respective staff editors. The students also maintain Wall Magazine and food for thought sections.

Alumni Association The Alumni Association has been constituted to bridge the relations between Alma Mater and its pass outs who hold prestigious positions in society, industry, education, administration etc. The institution aims to invite this stake holders so that they contribute to its betterment. Rajnish Ahuja, eminent industrialist of Ludhiana and an old student of the college is the president of the association.The objectives of the Association are :1. To strengthen the link and tie of fellowship between the present students, members of the teaching staff of D.A.V. College, Abohar and the old students in the country and abroad. 2. To promote and encourage active interest in the progress and welfare of its members and students by arranging programmes from time to time. The college organises grand meets of its Alumni. During every meet, a directory of its members is published and distinguished alumni are honoured. The college organised its Alumni Meet in January, this year.

Sports The college has luscious and well maintained play grounds. It aims at fabricating physical, mental and emotional health of the students. The teams unceasingly go for practice sessions and best athletes are sent for training also. The college has SAI's centre for Judo and Coaches for Archery and Athletics. The annual sports meet is held in the month of February and best athletes are duly rewarded. The college provides various amenities to the sports persons for the following games : Archery, Yoga, Boxing, Judo, Table-tennis, Volleyball, Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Netball, Badminton, Power lifting etc. The students have won acclaim in various championships and competitions at inter-college, university and interuniversity level. 'Yoga' centre is being run by the college under sports department. Yogi Sukhnath trains the students who have been brining honours to the college at University and interuniversity level competitions. We also run an add-on-course on Yoga and Mental Health.

Hostels The college has three hostels, one for boys and two for girls. The college hostels are well-built and furnished with ultramodern amenities. Smt. Raj Ahuja Memorial PG hostel for girls and the old UG hostel provide facilities like AC halls,gym, library, RO water purifiers, indoor games, internet etc besides providing basic amenities to the residents. The boys hostel is located near sports group and has all ultramodern facilities. The hostel wardens and the assistant wardens treat students with parental care.

National Service Scheme (NSS) NSS provides an opportunity for the community feeling to the volunteers. The department has three units for boys and one for girls of one hundred students each.

The volunteers are enrolled in the month of July. Every year one day and ten days special camps are organized. The volunteers offer themselves for the welfare of the populace. They get involvement in various activities of the adopted village and create awareness against social evils. This gives them a sense of participation in building dream India by providing an outlet to satisfy their creative urges. NSS has also associated itself with Indian Red Cross Society that provides a platform to attend state level and national camps. It also selects students for international seminars. Apart from these, various days and weeks are celebrated throughout the year viz. World Population Day, Van Mahotsava and National Literacy Week and so on. The students are also nominated for state awards like Shahed-e-Azam Yuva puraskar. They can also contribute to the magazine of Red Cross Society. There is also a provision for educational excursions and volunteers are selected for RD parade and national integration camps.

Health Centre Dr. Saroj Miglani has been appointed as visiting physician & consultant. Heath centre is kept open in the evening. Its chief objective is to provide first Aid, medicine and advice on health related problems.

Societies/Clubs The college has a number of subject societies and clubs that organize various activities throughout the year. Rules ForPayment of Dues1. Every candidate will have to make full

payment of dues at the time of admission on the same day when his/her form is signed by the Principal. In case of non-payment on the same date his/her seat may be offered to next candidate. All payment of college and hostel should be made on the prescribed dates.

2. All the payments of the college and hostel dues will be accepted in cash only.

3. Fee once paid shall not be refunded. 4. If a student leaves the college during the

academic session he will have to pay the fees upto the months in which migration is sanctioned by the university.

5. When the name of a student is struck off on account of non-payment of dues it can be renewed only if the guardian of the student makes a written request. The lectures, even if attended during that period, will not be counted.

Reward for Meritorious Students Academic excellence is our prime concern. The college makes all efforts to motivate the students to achieve excellence and proficiency. Any student who turns out to be a University/ Board Topper or gets to hold any of the first five positions or secures a place in merit list or achieves first / second or third position in college will be duly rewarded.

Eligibility Conditions for University Examination All the students are required to attend the classes regularly and punctually. They shall become eligible to appear in University examination only if they have attended the required number of lectures both in theory and practical classes.

For university examination, a student is required to attend 75% of the lectures delivered in theory as well practical classes subject to minimum of 25% attendance in each practical subject.

1. Name of the irregular students will be struck off from the college after continued absence of 6 (Six) days. 2. Any student who is absent from any of these house test without the prior permission of the Principal shall be fined and shall be deemed to have scored Zero in the subject(s) concerned. Any student found guilty of misconduct/ using unfair means during the examination will be severely punished. The parents of students will be informed about their performance in these examinations.

Sizzling Performance byEMA TeamThe Folk Dance (Boys) team Luddi bagged 3rd prize in 57th PU Interzonal Youth and Heritage Festival. The team clinched 2nd prize in Punjab Stae Intervarsity Heritage Youth Festivals (2015-16). The members were adorned with university colours from the department of youth welfare. The EMA students had a laudable performance in the Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival and brough home 22 prizes with Ghazal, One Act Play, Debate, Folk Dance (Boys), Poem Writing, Ladies' Traditional Song securing first positions.

Placements The placement cell of the college is quite active and invites various companies to visit the college and hold tests for students of various streams. The faculty members of science, commerce and computer applications work as a team to prepare the students for securing placements. 3 Students secured placement in Tech Mahindra, 2 in WIPRO. 9 got job offers from WIPRO, Infosys & TCS, 3 in TCS, 1 in Infosys and 2 in Accenture. 10 candidates were selected by M/s Anand Energy from Dept. of Agriculture.

Internal Assessment The students of B.A./B.Sc./B.B.A./B.Com. shall be awarded Internal Assessment on the basis of the house

Environment Education &Road Safety :Environment Education is a compulsory qualifying paper, which the students have to study in B.A./B.Sc./B.C.A./ B.B.A./ B.Com. The students are required to qualify this paper with at least 33% marks either in the Ist year / 2nd year / 3rd year of the course. The examination will be conducted by the university. However, the students of Semester system may appear in it during 2nd semester of 1st year.

A student appearing in the university examination shall have to secure at least 25% marks in the house test besides the requisite attendance in classes.

NOTE : The Principal may hold a special test for the benefit of those students who fail to qualify for the university examination on the basis of house test. A student appearing in the special test shall have to obtain at least 30% marks in the aggregate of all the subjects. A special fee for this test shall be charged. The special test may be held at the sole discretion of the Principal and no one can claim the benefits of special test as matter of right.
