Prospectus
Mission Statement
Great Oaks College is established to provide extended
educational opportunities to young adults who have severe
learning difficulties in West London. Our educational
programmes are designed to prepare students for active
lives, increasing the opportunities available to them
through increased independence.
At Great Oaks we believe that all of our students are
capable of making outstanding progress and of becoming
more active members of their community. We deliver highly
individual programmes of education precisely tailored to
their individual learning styles, needs and interests.
About Great Oaks College
Great Oaks College was opened in September 2018 in purpose
built accommodation on our new site at Gresham Road, Hounslow
offering a range of Further Education opportunities to young people
aged 19-25 with moderate, severe or profound and multiple learning
difficulties, including autistic students.
We can offer excellent vocational,
educational, sensory and sports
facilities and education delivered by
our highly skilled staff team. supported
by a range of qualified therapists and
health professional as indicated in their
Education Healthcare plan and our
assessment of their needs.
Students will follow one of
three pathways;
● Vocational
● Life Skills
● Sensory
Young people interested in attending
a post 19 course should apply by
completing the application enclosed.
They will be contacted by a member of
our team and invited to an assessment
and to discuss what they need to be
successful in College. If a place on one
of our courses at Great Oaks College
is suitable then funding will need to be
agreed by the Local Authority before a
place can be offered.

Vocational Choice Course
Vocational Choice is a two year course designed for young people
who have made the decision that they wish to pursue employment
on leaving education. They have demonstrated that this is a realistic
option for them and are ready to develop the level of independence
which will be needed. Applicants may not have a realistic idea
which type of employment they will be able to do and need to
explore options further.
Course Content
Core Curriculum on two days per week;
● Functional Skills Maths
● Functional Skills English
● ICT
● PHSCE
Vocational Training on one day per
week in two vocational areas
chosen from;
● Catering and hospitality
● Creative and practical enterprise
● Horticulture
● Premises services
Vocational experience on one day per
week; work experience either on site or
employer based supported by a trained
job coach.
Student’s therapy needs as indicated in
their EHCP will be delivered across
the course.
This is a four day per week programme
attending from 9am until 3pm daily.
Applicants may like to add an enrichment
day to their programme.
Entry Criteria
● Applicant should be able to
demonstrate that they have potential
for employment and intend to pursue
employment on leaving school
or college.
● They have already taken part in
work experience.
● They should be willing to undertake
independent travel training.
● They will be able to maintain an
attendance rate above 90%.
Accreditation
● NOCN Using Employability Skills
leading to an Entry Level certificate.
● Functional skills qualifications in
Literacy, numer-acy and ICT at an
appropriate level (Entry 1 or 2 or 3).

Vocational Training Courses
Our Vocational courses two year courses for people who have
decided to pursue employment when they leave education at the
end of the course. They have already tried arange of roles through
vocational training and work experience and need to develop
skills in their chosen career area.
Course Content
Core Curriculum on two days per week;

● ICT
● PHSCE

week in one vocational areas
chosen from;

From 9am until 3pm Applicants may
like to add an enrichment day to their
programme.

Life Skills
Life Skills is a two year course for young people need to remain in
education to develop skills for adult life. Students will work within
their ability to become as independent as possible in everyday tasks
and in accessing community facilities. Some young people may
take part in vocational tasting programme if appropriate.

Core Curriculum on two days per week;
● Literacy
● Numeracy
● ICT
● PHSCE
● Social Skills
Life skills programme on two days
per week;
● Local travel skills
● Accessing the community
● Accessing leisure facilities
● Cooking
● Household tasks
● Vocational tasters (if appropriate)
Student’s therapy needs as indicated in
their EHCP will be delivered across the
course.
This is a four day per week programme
attending from 10 am until 4 pm daily.
Applicants may like to add an enrichment
day to their programme. This programme
is not available part time.
Entry Criteria
● They have made demonstrable
progress during their previous key
stage/phase (usually 1 level).
● Applicants will not be living
independently before applying for
the course.
● They will be able to maintain an
attendance rate above 90%.
Accreditation
● LASER Entry Level Certificate in
Independ-ent Living—Living in the
Community and Looking after your
Home.
● NOCN Functional skills qualification
in liter-acy, numeracy and ICT if
appropriate (entry levels 1&2).

Independent Living Skills
Independent Living Skills is a two year course for young people need
to remain in education to develop skills for adult life. Students will

by attending their next placement on one
day per week. Most students will begin
travel training for their journey to College
during the course.

stage/phase. They are using their life
skills regularly at home.
● Applicants will not be living
independently before applying for
the course.
● They will be able to maintain an
attendance rate above 90%.
Accreditation

in literacy, nu-meracy and ICT if
appropriate (entry levels 1&2).

Multisensory Course
Great Oaks multisensory programmes are designed specifically to
meet the educational needs to young adults who have profound
and multiple learning difficulties.
Course Content
Multisensory programmes are
individually designed to meet student’s
needs to enable them to develop and
maintain skills in communication,
interest and awareness, physical skills,
participation in personal care. Student
will have access to community facilities
and on site hydrotherapy where
appropriate.
This is a five day per week programme
attending from 10am until 4pm daily
Student’s therapy needs as indicated in
their EHCP will be delivered across
the course.
This is a flexible programme which
student might attend until they are 25,
progress will be reviewed annually with
places agreed on a two yearly basis.
Most students in their final year in
education will begin to attend four days
per week and spend a day a week in
their next placement.
Entry Criteria
● They have made demonstrable
progress during their previous key
stage/phase.
● Applicants will not be living
independently or in residential care
before applying for the course.

Enrichment Days Making an application
Students on four days per week courses may like to add an
enrichment day to their week. Enrichment Days are designed to
provide a choice of enjoyable sports and creative activities and are
aimed at encouraging our students to remain fit and active for
their adult lives.
Students interested in attending a course at
Great Oaks College should apply initially by
completing an application form and forward-
ing it, in the first instance Anne Clinton.
Applications will be invited to an assessment.
If a course is felt to be appropriate an offer of
a place will be made to the applicants Local
Education Authority, with the assessed level
of funding required. Funding decisions will be
made by Local Authorities.
Places in great Oaks College will be confirmed
by the Local Authority.
NB Great Oaks College does not arrange
transport to College. Applications for transport
will need to be made separately.
There will be an choice of activities published annually such as;
The number of choices will depend on how many student sign up.
Funding for enrichment days will be agreed separately.
