We’re excited and proud to be the first UTC in the UK to specialise in health care and health science, offering learning and career opportunities for young people like no other school or college in the region.
healthfuturesutc.co.uk04
By combining academic study with real-life work projects, personal development activities, and career opportunities our young people become well-rounded, work-ready individuals. They benefit from both a highly academic education and by putting their learning into practice in exciting work-focused projects delivered by industry professionals.
We’re able to deliver tomorrow’s education today through a robust partnership of over 20 of the region’s major health and education organisations. Working together we develop young people who can meet employers’ demands for good qualifications, transferable skills and a professional attitude to work whatever career they may eventually choose.
There’s no doubt that Health Futures UTC is a fantastic place for 14-19 year olds to gain a unique top-class education, build confidence and explore a vast range of career and higher education pathways.
Our Vision Our vision is to provide a broad, inclusive health and science curriculum, delivered to the highest standards in partnership with our employer partners. This ensures our learners receive personalised, practical experiences, offering opportunities that enrich their experience above and beyond that normally expected, and enhancing their employability.

A new approach to learning
We understand that whilst children and young people are individuals, each with their own learning styles and motivators, they all flourish when nurtured and encouraged to realise their full potential and achieve their ambitions. Health Futures UTC staff and partners are determined to meet these aspirations by using a variety of teaching methods, activities and technologies to provide a unique learning experience.
We will open up their young minds to the endless possibilities awaiting them in the world of work and education through a range of experiences, tasks, studies, collaborative projects and personal development activities. Together, teachers and students will design and complete personalised study plans that will deliver sound qualifications and a perfect mix of knowledge, skills and experiences to help every learner thrive in the workplace or university.
Technical challenge ProjectsAll of our students participate in project work known as technical challenges. This is one of the key differences between a UTC and a traditional school or college. Students work with practising professionals, supported by a use of scenarios and technologies designed to reflect real-life workplace and community settings. Working together in this way helps develop our students’ understanding of the health sectors and the intrinsic links to their classroom learning. In addition to cultivating practical, technical, professional, business, and social skills the projects also provide valuable qualifications.
Inclusive education opportunitiesOur extended day ensures that students can make the best use of the resources around them and receive the support they require to flourish. Classroom studies and technical projects are designed to ensure that learning is taking place in the right way, at the right level, and with the right support from teachers, partners, peers and mentors.
We foster a culture of respect, encouragement and ambition that ensures the needs of all learners are sensitively and appropriately considered and managed. Parents and young people can be confident of an equitable provision for all students including Vulnerable Learners, those with Statements of Special Educational Needs, and those identified as Gifted & Exceptionally Able learners.
State-of-the-art technology Equipped with first-class technology and learning spaces specifically designed to enhance the student experience beyond the traditional, our campus provides the perfect setting in which to develop young professionals. To complement the extensive use of e-learning in the classroom and to help put their knowledge into context, students are also taught using technologies that can replicate a wide range of health care and health science environments. Inspiring and stimulating their minds and senses, a simulated hospital ward with interactive computerised ‘patients’ and a high-tech visualisation suite are used to immerse students in virtual environments. The realistic reproduction of settings such as an operating theatre, road traffic incident or pathology laboratory brings sights and sensations not ordinarily accessible to young students.

Students will look and feel like young healthcare professionals
The UTC working day We’ve designed our days to closely reflect a typical business day, with an 8.30am start and a 5.00pm finish Monday to Thursday, and a 4.00pm finish on Friday. This helps prepare our students for the reality of employment expectations and routines. It also means there’s little or no homework as we aim to cover everything during the working day.
Dress codeIn keeping with world-of-work principles we’ve adopted a business dress code rather than a traditional school uniform to help students look and feel like young healthcare professionals. Any specialist clothing and equipment will be provided by the UTC for students. The dress code details can be found on our website.
Sports & wellbeing Taking advantage of a roof-top games area, fitness suite and gym, all young people will participate in regular Physical Education (PE) sessions for their personal health and wellbeing. Various aspects of fitness and wellbeing will also be integrated into learner’s core subjects, options and technical project work, at an appropriate level.

Flexible career opportunities Although Health Futures has a focus on health care and health science, students acquire robust qualifications and transferable skills universally welcomed by all employers and universities. Their unique education equips them for the world of work whatever career pathway they may eventually choose, and encourages them to explore opportunities they may not even know exist.
Careers advice and support All Health Futures students benefit from extensive careers advice and signposting to help them on their journey through education and into the world of work, higher education, apprenticeship or specialist training. Whatever their eventual choice, everyone is given valuable access to career specialists and professionally qualified partners, all happy to share their first-hand knowledge and experience to help young people make important decisions about their life choices.
Extensive health career opportunities For those who decide on a health focused career pathway, our partnership with major NHS organisations provides valuable insight into the 350+ career opportunities offered by the UK’s largest employer. But even with that level of choice, prospects are not limited to medical, care or laboratory roles. Another rich seam for employment is public health which focuses on preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting wellbeing. There is tremendous career diversity and opportunity across the entire health economy locally, nationally and globally, spanning the NHS, local authorities, charitable organisations, private businesses and community schemes.
Unsure about career pathways? There is lots of information online about health career opportunities. For example the NHS website introduces young people to the vast range of choices on offer and advises them on the qualities, skills and qualifications needed to follow their ambitions. With an A-Z of careers, videos, case studies and an interactive career-mapping tool designed to help explore and consider enjoyable work roles, there’s plenty of practical information at: stepintothenhs.nhs.uk and an insight into the vast array of public health careers at: phorcast.org.uk

Creative learning through collaboration
There’s a school of thought that suggests children and young people flourish when encouraged to explore and express the vast possibilities that stimulate and occur to younger minds. They’re also known to especially benefit from creative learning and collaborative working at a young age.Health Futures UTC is excellently placed to exploit this knowledge and provide valuable advantages to the region’s 14-19 year olds.By combing an interactive approach to study with an extraordinary opportunity to learn co-operatively from one another, career professionals and qualified teachers, Health Futures is able to offer its students an inspirational and enviable educational journey.
Life skills through enrichment
To enhance learning and personal development each individual participates in a programme of activities known as enrichment. These are an integral part of our approach to education, offering students the opportunity to learn and share skills and experiences, and encouraging them to face new challenges. They may wish to undertake a Duke of York Award, volunteer to help a charity, explore a business initiative, become a Health Cadet, or get involved in art, music and drama community projects. The enrichment programme has a strong emphasis on the personal, social and enterprise (PSE) aspects of a UTC education, building confidence, enhancing interpersonal skills and developing a sense of community and social awareness.
Building team spirit through Learning Companies
Taking the traditional ‘House’ system to another level Health Futures UTC has adopted a Learning Company framework to encourage and support students’ progress and achievement. This concept helps expand academic learning, personal development and career interests through collaborative working, which in turn promotes a sense of team spirit and fosters a culture of equality, diversity, dignity and respect.
