    TheCOLLEGE

    ProfilePhek Government College is located on a hillside with a campus area of 38 acres on the outskirts of Phek Town. It is affiliated to Nagaland University and offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science programmes with honours in five Arts and five Science subjects. It also hosts an IGNOU Study Centre offering postgraduate, diploma and certificate courses. The College has total faculty strength of 32. Eight faculty members have doctoral degree and five others are pursuing their studies. There are 30 ministerial and supporting staffs.

    HISTORY Phek College was established on 28th July 1981 as a private institution and the College started to function at Pre-University level from 15th September. The College then became affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in 1983. Degree courses were started in 1994 with B.A. General Course and Honours Course in Political Science, Education and History.

    On 1st February 1990 the College was taken over by the Government of Nagaland and it is now affiliated to Nagaland University.

    Science stream was introduced at Higher Secondary level in 2005. The name of the College was changed from ‘Phek College’ to ‘Phek Government College’ in September 2004. The College started offering B. Sc. Honours in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics andZoology and B.A. Honours courses in English and Economics from July2013. Higher Secondary courses (Arts & Science) were detached fromthe college in 2015.

    NAAC ACCREDITED “B GRADE”The College was assessed and accredited by the

    National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on 4th March 2019.

    Vocational CoursesAdd-on Courses with CertificateThe College offers three vocationalisation courses, mushroom cultivation, folriculture (funded under RUSA Vocationalisation Project) and coffee cultivation.

    The courses are of six months duration. Mushroom Cultivation can be taken as a CBCP* (Choice Based Credit Paper) or, as an Add- on Course by any interested person. Floriculture & Coffee cultivation can be taken as Add- on Courses only.(*CBCPs are taken in lieu of EVS- II in the 6th Semester B.A. or B.Sc. Add- on Courses are Certificate courses, which are issued by the College.)

    • The Mushroom Cultivation Course offers both theory and practical classes. There is a Mushroom Cultivation Unit specifically set up for this purpose, where students can have a hands- on experience on how to set up mushroom growth rooms and how to grow them under controlled conditions. Mushroom spawn production techniques are also offered.

    • Proficiency in English can be taken as a CBCP. During the course of study, the students are taught the basics of phonetics,varieties and differences in the British, American and Indian English,grammar and proficiency in English skills. Those with basic English knowledge can hone their skills by undergoing this course of study.

    • The Floriculture Course includes both theory and practical classes. Students are trained to prepare flower beds, and harvest flowers in poly and green houses.

    • Coffee cultivation Course consists of theory and pratical classes on the methods of coffee cultivation which includes preparation of seed beds, cultivation area, pest and disease management, harvesting and marketing.

    The College offers both Bachelor of Arts and Science (General & Honours) Courses.

    • Admission process begins soon after the declaration of NBSE Higher Secondary results.

    • Application form along with prospectus-cum-handbook can be obtained from the College on payment.

    • Application forms duly filled and accompanied by attested photocopy of requisite documents should be submitted to the College during office hours, within the stipulated time.

    • Students should compulsorily come with their parents/guardian on the day of admission.

    • 5% of seat is reserved for SC/OBC/differently abled students.

    • Admissions are also open for foreign students.

    • Orientation programme for freshers is conducted at a later date. It is COMPULSORY for all admitted students to attend the orientation.

    • Students should remain within the campus during class hours on all working days.

    • Students loitering around within or outside the campus during class hours will be penalized.

    • Use of mobile phone or any other electronic gadgets is strictly prohibited during class hours and inside the library. Defaulters will attract penalty of confiscation of the gadgets for two months.

    • Use of intoxicants are strictly forbidden in the College premises.

    • Ragging in any form will lead to immediate expulsion.

    • The college maintains zero tolerance towards sexual harassment.

    • Malpractices during examination will attract penalty of expulsion from the College.

    • Every student must handle College property with care.

    • Every student must maintain cleanliness of the College campus.

    • No collection of money or fund raising activity is allowed within the College Campus without prior permission from the Principal.

    • It is compulsory for all the students to wear uniform every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On other days, students are to wear decent attire.

    • Every student must, at all times maintain decorum within or outside the Campus.

    • End Semester Examination question papers are prepared by the University.

    • Examination routine for End Semester Examination is notified by the University which is normally of 3 hours duration.

    • Students are evaluated on a 30:70 basis i.e. 30 marks for Internal Assessment and 70 marks for end Semester Examination.

    • Pass Marks: A student shall have to secure a minimum of 45% marks in the Internal Assessment, and 45% marks in the end semester examination in theory papers. However, in a given Practical Paper, a student shall have to secure a minimum of 55% marks to be considered passed in a given Semester.

    • Activities for Internal Assessment: The internal assessment for 30 marks is made in the following three categories of activities:

    a) Class Test b) Assignments c) Seminars

    • Eligibility Criteria for End Semester Examination: A student shall be deemed qualified to appear at the End-Semester Examinations only if he/she secures minimum qualifying marks in the internal assessment tests and maintains 80% Attendance in every subject.

    • Admission to the Next Semester: Advancement to the next semester is permitted only with a maximum of two backlog papers from the preceeding semester. Further, entry to the next semester shall be regulated at the level of 4th, 5th & 6th Semesters which are explained as under:

    a) Admission to 4th Semester shall be allowed only after clearing 1st Semester backlog paper(s) during the 3rd semester.

    b) Admission to 5th semester shall be allowed only after clearing 2nd Semester backlog paper(s) during 4th semester.

    c) Admission to 6th semester shall be allowed only after clearing 3rd Semester backlog paper(s) during 5th semester.

    d) Backlog paper(s) of 4th Semester needs to be cleared during 6th Semester.

    e) Backlog paper(s) of 5th and 6th semesters need to be cleared during subsequent examinations of these semesters within 10 semesters with a maximum of only one chance.

    * Students desirous to drop honours paper can do so only after their 1st Semester, before the Admission to 2nd Semester.

    L. MEFUTIBA MERIT AWARDThe L. Mefutiba Merit Award is a meritorious award instituted and

    sponsored by Shri. L. Mefutiba, former Principal of the College. This award is given to the College topper in the University Exam. The award

    ABOUT THE SUBJECTThe Department of History offer general courses on socio-economic, political and cultural life in India from Pre-history up to the Indian National Movement. The objective is to make students understand the elements of change and continuity in Indian history. Subjects relating to major developments in the world from decline of the feudal age till the emergence of Cold War Era are also included. Honours paper cover varied subjects on North East India, East Asia, India under the Mughals, history of the United States of America, introduction to archaeology, Modern India, coming of Christianity in Nagaland, etc.
