    What Is Prostate Cancer?

    Prostate Cancer involves the prostate

gland, a part of the male reproductive

    system.

Normally, the cells in the gland grow and

divide to form new cells in an orderly

way. The cells perform their functions,

and then die. Sometimes, however, in-

stead of the cells dying, they keep divid-

ing and creating new cells that the body

    does not need.

The cells form a mass of tissue called a

tumor. The tumor can be benign

(harmless), or malignant (harmful). A ma-

    lignant tumor means cancer.

    You May Be

    At Greater Risk If:

You are a man over 40 years old.

Theres a family history of prostate

    cancer.

    You are African-American

You eat too many high fat foods.

You eat a lot of red meat.

You dont eat enough fruits and

    vegetables.

Prostate Cancer occurs more often in

Black men than any other group of

    men in the United States.

    Dont Believe Everything

You Hear:Myth: An enlarged prostate gland is

    a sure sign of cancer.

Myth: Prostate cancer is caused by

having too much sexual activity when youreyoung.

Myth: Having a mass or lump in the

    prostate means you have cancer.

Use These Tips For A Longer

    Healthier Life:

Eat low fat and high fiber foods

such as whole wheat, rye and bran

    breads and cereals; peas and beans;

Eat 5 or more fruits and vegetablesdaily. Red, green, and yellow vegeta-

    bles, especially tomatoes are very

    good. Grapefruit and water-

    melon may also be very

    helpful.

    Dont eat a lot of red meat;

Have a rectal examination by your

doctor every year after age 40 to 45.

See a doctor immediately if you de-

velop any of the warning signals on

    the other side.

    Here are the Facts:

Fact: An enlarged prostate oftendevelops in men over 60, but often

    does not mean cancer.

Fact: The cause of prostate canceris unknown..

Fact: A lump in the prostate mayor may not mean cancer. Thatswhy its so important to get a rectal

examination by your doctor everyyear after age 50. Men at high riskshould begin testing at age 45.

    Can Prostate Cancer

    Be Found Early?

Prostate cancer can often be found

early by testing the amount ofprostate-specific antigen (PSA) in

    the blood. With prostate cancer,

the PSA level is usually above 4.

However, the PSA test is not

    100% accurate.

Early detection and treatmentprovides the best
