Why Eradicating Pests are Important?

Pests are unwanted plants, animals, insects, germs and other organisms that interfere with

human activity. They may bite, destroy food crops, damage property or otherwise make our

lives more difficult. Effective pest control requires some knowledge about the various pests

and how harmful they can be.

Common pests in Australia

1. Termites

Termites are Australia’s most destructive pests causing an average damage worth

$7,000 to $8,000 to a home. And 1 in 4 Australian homes will have termites in their

lifetime. Termites which are usually called as ‘white ants’ live in colonies and are a

collection of different individuals with specific functions or tasks.

2. Mice

House mice are active all the year nesting in warm, quiet places like lofts or cavity walls.

They constantly gnaw, damage furnishes and chew on packaging to access food and

have been responsible for enormous losses of food. They are known to spread disease

and have caused enormous losses of human life.

3. Cockroaches

Cockroaches like to live in warm homes, kitchens and wall cavities. They often come out

after dark and feed on any type of food.

4. Wasps

Wasps can become a problem in your garden and can enter homes too. Large wasp

nests contain over 25,000 wasps. They can be found in lofts, walls cavities, trees,

bushes and underground. Although all wasps have the ability to sting people, they

generally only use their sting to paralyse or kill their prey. However it is important to note

that wasps will attack to defend their nests when intruded upon.

5. Moths

Moths can be a real nuisance in the home. They lay eggs on natural clothing and

damage by eating clothes, carpets, upholstery and can be very destructive.

6. Bed Bugs

Contrary to their name, bed bugs feed on human blood and can be very difficult to

control as they spread quickly. If unable to reach humans, bed bugs will feed on warm

blooded animals like birds, rodents and pets.

7. Ants

Ants enter homes in search of foods and their nests are often located in lawns, warm,

dry soil and under paving. They are social insects that live in more or less permanent

nests and their colony sizes may vary enormously.

8. Spiders

Australia has the world’s most deadly spiders. Although they are beneficial in keeping

flies and mosquitoes to a minimum, they may pose a risk to family.

Diseases Transmitted by Household Pests

Salmonellosis

If the food in the home gets infected by rodent faeces, chances are that the members of

the family are going to contract salmonellosis which is a type of bacterial food poisoning,

usually marked by gastroenteritis.

Leptospirosis

Also known as Weil’s disease, this type of disease is transmitted to humans by contact

with the urine of the infected animals. It is highly infectious and is characterized by

jaundice and fever.

Tapeworm

Tapeworm is one of the most dangerous yet common diseases spread from household

pests to humans. They stay in the intestines of vertebrates and make them extremely

sick.

Favus

Favus happens to be an extremely contagious skin disease found in humans as well as

numerous domestic fowl and animals which is caused by a fungus. All species of

rodents carry diseases which can be transmitted to humans and even common pets like

dogs and cats may be affected.

So, if you find any of these pests in your residence, immediately contact a pest control services
