MAUI SCHOONER RESORT MISSION STATEMENT

To provide a welcome slice of paradise for ourselves and our children, now and into the future

Professionally managed by Trading Places International

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Aloha,

Since the last Schooner Scoop, the Board has met twice and approved the following items.

• We will begin updating the showers in 2015. Because we are converting the small tubs to showers, plumbing permits will be required from the County. Once permitted, the shower work will commence. In order to spread the costs over time and to keep as many of our units in service as possible for our guests, it is planned to take place over the next couple of years.

• Maui County requires us to install new water flow “detector valves” on our resort’s fire line main feed from the street before starting our work on the showers. Water use is an issue on the island, and the county wants to ensure fire lines are not used for general water use. The Board approved the required fire line work and it should be completed early next year.

• Our Time Warner wireless service will be improved to accommodate our guests’ increased use of multiple wireless devices at the resort including computer laptops, E-readers, I-pads, and smart phones. Hopefully, you will note the improvement during your next stay at the Schooner.

• We approved the purchase and installation of a solar heating system for our pool. This will reduce our pool’s propane fuel bill for heating. The payback for the installation cost is expected to

be fairly short. This project should be completed by the end of this year. The Board continues checking into the feasibility of utilizing solar power for a portion of the resort’s electrical needs.

Your Board is very concerned that Maui County continues to escalate property tax issues by increasing both the Schooners property valuation and tax rate. The resulting increased tax bill for the Schooner has necessitated us to reluctantly increase our annual maintenance fees by 3% for this next year. The Board and management have done an excellent job in controlling and reducing costs where we can, but the tax increase was too great for us to absorb and still keep the Schooner up to our owners’ expectations. We continue to work on this issue and currently plan to contest our evaluation before Maui County next year when the county allows such appeals to occur.

Mahalo and best wishes to you for a Happy Holiday Season and Prosperous New Year.

Mahalo,

Tom Newman President, Maui Schooner

The beloved humpback whales are back!! Boat captain reports humpback sighting miles southwest of Mala Warf.

The whales are some of Maui’s most faithful visitors. Two-thirds of the entire population of North Pacific humpbacks migrates here from Alaska, returning year after year from mid-December thru May to give birth in the warm, shallow waters. The whales put on a fantastic show of tail-slaps and breaches, entertaining thousands of beach-goers and whale watchers.

It is believed that the kohola (whales) have been visiting Hawaiian waters for hundreds of years and were an important symbol to the ancient Hawaiians. Respect for the ocean and marine life is deeply embedded in the native Hawaiian culture, and in 1994 the Hawaiian Islands Humpbacks Whale National Marine Sanctuary was created to protect the humpback whales and their habitat in Hawaii.

The beachfront setting of the sanctuary headquarters in Kihei pro-vides both beautiful scenery and spectacular nature watching. During winter, whales can easily be spotted on the horizon with frequent activity close to the Maui Schooner shore line. Guest have com-mented on the displays of nature’s wonder directly from their lanais on property. I hope you too have this opportunity during your visit.

Replacement items purchased recently:

• Jacobsen Eclipse 2 Hybrid 22” blade Mower used for our turf grass• John Deere riding lawn mower• Queen size sleeper mechanism• Gas grill• Spa filter• All King size headboards replaced free of charge due to peeling of

Have a wonderful fall and winter season and I look forward to seeing you soon!

ALOHA KAKOU (GREETINGS TO ALL)

TO THE

NANCY GEIST, Resort General Manager

“Aloha and Mahalo to the staff and management of the Maui Schooner. We have been owners at the Schooner since its inception. We can honestly say the resort is as beautiful and pristine as the day it opened. The new restaurant just adds to the beauty of the resort. Mahalo again to all for keeping our paradise away from home so attractive.”

- Joseph and Joyce Serauskas

I would like to say that of the ten plus time shares the wife and I own, the Maui Schooner has the most little things that make it feel like home. With flower vases, cookie and muffin sheets, wood block with knives, blender, mixing bowls etc. Also inside unit laundry, beach chairs, ice chest, the fans and AC are quiet, everything is or looks new.
