Preserving concrete structures with StoCretecProtection and repair solutions

Property managementThe property management area in-cludes product and system solutions for the protection and repair of concrete facades on industrial, administrative and residential build-ings. These buildings come under the definition of structural engineering, which refers to construction work above ground level.

All products assigned to this applica-tion combine high cost-effectiveness with maximum safety. There is a com-prehensive product range available, which also complies with the require-ments of the EN 1504.

To make things simple, the solutions are divided into four application fields:• Property management• Traffic• Energy• Nature and resources

There can be many different rea-sons for carrying out a concrete repair.A repair is always required when the look or function of building elements or constructions made from concrete or reinforced concrete deteriorates: usage or strain caused by influences that are detrimental to concrete can result in serious damage. Intelligent systems and solutions are required in order to repair the func-tion and appearance of the building elements or constructions and provide long-term protection.

This brochure gives an overview of the StoCretec product portfolio for the protection and repair of steel rein-forced concrete structures. Whether it is a facade, bridge, tunnel, wastewa-ter treatment plant or power station, StoCretec system and product solu-tions are perfectly customised to suit any area of application.

Products according to the standard – EN 1504

The EN 1504 series of standards “Products and systems for the protec-tion and repair of concrete structures” has been in force since 1 January 2009. All StoCretec products comply with the specifications and test criteria of this standard.

Introduction | 5

Nature and resourcesThe refurbishment of facilities for waste and water management represents a particular challenge where the aim is to optimise quality, cost-effectiveness, and environmental protection.

Concrete structures in sewage plants can sometimes be exposed to extraor-dinary effects. On the one hand, there are general stresses and strains – including frost with or without deicing salt, and carbonation – on the other hand, there are specific chemical threats, such as biogenic sulphuric acid corrosion.

The extensive StoCretec programme for the protection and repair of con-crete structures in sewage plants is evidence of many years' experience and special expertise.

TrafficTraffic applications require checked and tested repair systems that meet the stringent requirements of traffic engineering and construction. This area of application focuses on the repair and protection of bridges and tunnels.

Dry and wet spray mortars and so-phisticated silo technology facilitate efficient, cost-effective work proce-dures on the construction site, adapted to the size of the project in question.

Innovative composite materials made from carbon fibres have a low dead weight and increase subsequently the load-bearing capacity, thereby repairing the suitability for use. The StoCretec procedures for strengthen-ing existing structures are, of course, approved by the construction supervi-sion authorities.

EnergyExposed constructions such as power plants or dams must be able to with-stand extreme loads. Their construc-tion requires suitable systems for surface protection from the very be-ginning.

Tower constructions, such as cooling towers, are subject to immense stress. Aggressive pollutants can also dam-age the building substance. For this reason, both preventive protection and sustainable repair measures are required.

The StoCretec product range for this application is perfectly customised to meet high standards, whether an existing facility is being modernised or a new building is being built.

Concrete repair to comply with the highest requirementsThe problems involved in concrete repair are extremely complex: weathering influ-ences, aggressive pollutants, and mechanical stress all leave their marks on concrete. So it is only to be expected that refurbishment measures have to meet the highest durability standards in order to preserve the building substance. At the same time, economic factors must also be taken into account. This is where the StoCretec product systems come in, with an outstanding cost/benefit ratio.

Whatever the cause, the objective is clear: finding an efficient solution which protects the construction and, if necessary, allows it to be adapted for changed requirements.

StoCretec repair systems are adapted to suit the specific requirements of any field of application. Whether the construction is a facade, bridge, tunnel, sewage plant, or industrial building, there is bound to be a product or system that can be integrated into the repair concept.

Protecting reinforcementTo maintain the durability of reinforced concrete as a building material, con-crete and reinforcement must be protected against damage. A major source of damage is the corrosion of the reinforcement due to high carbonation depths. The penetration of chloride (e.g. from deicing salt) also causes corrosion of the rein-forcement.The most common form of corrosion protection coatings are polymer-modi-fied cement-bound systems (PCC). Products such as StoCrete TH 110 also function as a bonding layer for the repair mortar. Alternatively, de-pending on the particular application, corrosion protection coatings with an epoxy resin base are recommendable.

The right mortar for any application

A holistic solution means considering all relevant aspects of the repair of concrete structures as a whole, whilst remaining cost-effective. The StoCrete SM quick repair mortar represents an outstanding example of such a solution. Re-profiling and the application of fairing coat are com-pleted in a single step, which reduces time expenditure and, as a conse-quence, results in monetary benefits both for the investor and the com-pany applying the material.

StoCrete TF 204 marks the launch of a new generation of fairing coat. Thanks to the reduction of the modu-lus of elasticity and the compressive strength, the filler can also be used for solid and less solid substrates. Moreover, this material allows an even coating free of pores.

Securing the future with durable surface protection systemsThanks to its manifold design possibilities, its outstanding properties, and nearly unlim-ited formability, concrete is the most popular building material in modern architecture. Creative intelligence and perfect construction result in building concepts which meet the highest aesthetic and artistic requirements.

However, soiling or corrosion may impair the appearance over time, while also endan-gering the constructions. There is a great deal that can, and must, be done to combat this. Like any building material that is subject to wear, weather, aggressive pollutants, and other external influences, concrete changes its appearance over time. This is not only a visual problem, but also a technical one, as material ageing may also damage the building substance. Appropriate surface protection is therefore essential in the long term.

StoCretec offers an extensive range of solutions for preventive protection against substances harmful to concrete, as well as for subsequent repair. Whether impregna-tion, hydrophobic impregnation or coating, the proven high-quality StoCretec prod-ucts do an excellent job of conserving the value of concrete structures.

Long-time protection at little expenseConstructions can be protected in the long term by implementing preventive, ecological, and economical measures at reasonable technical expense. One of these measures is the deep-acting hydrophobic impregnation of rein-forced concrete structures.

Based on the latest research findings, the hydrophobic impregnation has been continuously improved to pro-duce a deep-acting hydrophobic impregnation. Today, the deep-acting hydrophobic impregnation of concrete with StoCryl HG 200 represents one of the most efficient protective measures against the ingress of water-soluble pollutants into the concretes surface layer.

Good to know: even the appearance of exposed concrete remains abso-lutely unchanged with this method.

The detailed technical specifications and information on the products contained in the Technical Data Sheets and approvals must be observed.

Versatile surface protectionSealing coats partially fill the capillary pores on the concrete surface. They produce a thin layer on the surface and prevent water absorption. This way, pollutants dissolved in water cannot penetrate the concrete. Fur-thermore, they reduce the diffusion of carbon dioxide. Sealing coats can be applied in a transparent, glazing, or coloured manner, which allows for different types of design. The thin layer is, however, not suitable for building elements subject to high mechanical and chemical stress.

Coatings as well as intermediate coat-ings cover an extremely wide applica-tion range. As is the case with other measures, the prevention of water absorption is the main objective. Additionally, coatings also have other properties such as diffusion resistance, crack bridging, or wear resistance. The availability of different colourings complies with the desire for individual design options in build-ing environments.

Closing cracks fast and reliableAll products for concrete injection

Cracks in concrete constructionCracks in reinforced concrete cannot be completely avoided. The tensile strength of concrete is rather low compared to its compressive strength. Tensile forces have to be transmitted by the reinforcement. Cracks occur when the steel expansion exceeds the flexibility of the concrete. However, not every crack represents a fault. The permissible crack widths are regu-lated in EN 1992-1, NA. Narrower cracks are considered harmless. In the case they exceed the permissible width, the cracks must be treated.

Systematic refurbishment by crack injectionInjection is a proven and reliable method tho repair cracked concrete: specially formulated reaction resins or hydraulic materials are injected into cracks or cavities by means of an injection packer.

The correct StoCretec injection system is selected after an in depth analysis - considering the cause of the crack, the crack condition and the intended use of the concrete structure.

Strengthening of concrete structures by using CFRP-systemsIntelligent technology for the repair or retrofitting of reinforced concrete structures

The proven Sto S&P CFRP–System solutions, enable economically convincing solutions for subsequent strengthening and improvement of reinforced concrete in structural and civil engineering structures.

CFRP – technology replaces the conventional construction technologyProjects which have been realized worldwide within the last decades demonstrate the performance, reliabil-ity and durability of the Sto S&P CFRP – System strengthening solutions.Solutions are available for:• flexural strengthening with e.g.

Sto S&P surface bonded lamella or lamellas applied into slots, carved into the concrete

• shear force strengthening with e.g. surface bonded steel lamella or Sto S&P carbon sheets

• end anchorage and prestressing of Sto S&P laminates

• structural column confinement e.g. Sto S&P laminated carbon sheets

• seismic retrofitting with e.g. Sto S&P laminated carbon sheets

Using the solutions, structural strengthening is also possible where conventional construction technology could not be applied. Sto S&P CFRP systems are flexible, ensure fast and easy application, can be easily trans-ported and, above all, they are long term proofed.

Bridges or parking garages: no reinforced concrete structure is built for eternityReinforced concrete structures are built for a long service lifetime. But e.g. errors during the construction, structural damages, increasing loads or the change of use of the building, brings up the need to strengthen an existing structure. In the past, struc-tural strengthening could only be done by using complex technology, like the application of an additional reinforced concrete layer e.g. by using the spray mortar systems or installing a steel beam. However, these conven-tional methods entail a number of disadvantages. They increase the dead load of the structure, reduce the vertical clearance, cause long downtimes, noise and dirt. Or the installation process is simply expen-sive and time consuming.

Modern carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) systems – state of the art – for structural strengtheningFor a wide range of engineering applications, CFRP is used as a light and stable material in very many years. A minimal thermal expansion coefficient and excellent resistance to corrosion as well as the specific very high tensile strength are some of the technological advantages of CFRP.Sto S&P structural CFRP strengthening systems have been intensive tested under many different conditions by an independent research institute under government supervision. All tests were carried out to ensure the long-term performance in differ-ent environments. Tests have been conducted for e.g. long-term fatigue, artificial ageing, stability in alkaline environments and installation and use under dynamic load.

Sto S&P ARMO System. Innovative strengthening system with a car-bon grid reinforced cementitious mortar systemBy using a specialized cementitious spray mortar, a carbon grid is applied on the concrete surface with a three layer system. The first layer is the spray mortar, the second layer the grid and the last layer is again the spray mortar. If necessary, it is possible to apply an additional grid layer. This

system can be installed easily by each company which is familiar with the spray mortar technology. It can be used where ever polymer modified cementitious spray mortar can be used and additional structural strengthening is needed. Additional benefits of the systems are the corro-sion, the chemical and fire resistance and, of course, the small application thickness compared with a system using steel reinforcement grids.

The detailed technical specifications and information on the products contained in the Technical Data Sheets and approvals must be observed.

Bridge deck waterproofingBridges need to be protected: these constructions are subject to high mechanical loads and increasing traffic. In particular, vibrations in-duced by the dramatically rising num-ber of heavy transports weaken the structure and generate cracks. Pene-trating chlorides included in de-icing salts induce corrosion and cause substantial damage of the reinforce-ment.To preserve the durability and stability of the structure, bridge decks have to be protected against water and deic-ing salts by means of age-resistant waterproofing systems.
