Within days of the Ghostbusters movie being released in June of 1984, I was approached
by a friend of mine and he said that we “had to build what was in this movie, and take it to the
beach [to show off] and have a good time”. Needless to say, I was curious as to what he
was talking about.
I would watch the movie three (3) times in the theaters.
My first viewing was to “take in” what my
friend was talking about, and just to enjoy the movie.
The second viewing was to take notes with my
note pad, and to draw sketches as fast as I could to keep up with the movie. I was mainly
focused on drawing the Proton Pack. This turned out to be somewhat of a challenge. For the next viewing, I had another idea.
Finally, in my third viewing, I took my Yashika SLR 35 mm Color Camera armed with 24 ex-posures. (In those days, digital cameras as we know them today did not exist.) Later in this document, you will see some of the pic-tures that I had to work with in order to come up with what I call the GENERATION ONE PACK, or simply the GEN-1 Pack. After the photos were developed, about a week later, I
was able to roll up my sleeves and begin drafting the Proton Pack based on my
memory and the pictures that I had taken in the theaters.
Later in this document, you will see some pic-tures of the construction of the GEN-1 Pack
from the 1991 Assembly.
After completion of the two Proton Packs in the summer of 1984, we took them to Johnny Mercer’s Pier and Carolina Beach in Wilming-
ton North Carolina. That was lots of fun ‘busting Ghosts there and everyone seemed
to enjoy it.

All in all, these plans were based on viewing the movie just three (3) times and a couple dozen or
so photos that I had taken.
For that Halloween of 1984 and the next seven Halloweens that followed, that was my costume
and I managed to win several contests.
In my days, I did not have the VHS Tape of the movie in order to more accurately render the movie props. When the movies came out on
DVDs, I was able to take some digital still shots on the computer to better understand the movie packs, but I kept my GEN-1 Pack as I had de-
signed it in 1984.
One thing that I have done was to modify and im-prove the electronics over the years. As of No-vember of 2011, I’ve added sound to my Pack.

The Ghost Trap
Here are some early concepts of the Ghost Trap.
Although the final product does not have trap doors that open and close, a dry ice chamber
was installed making a cool ef-fect of a “caught ghost”.

Here’s a prototype of the PKE Meter that I built in October 1991. Missing in this photo is the handle and 9 Volt power source.

The PKE circuit here was based on a 555 Timer IC along with the 4017 Decade Counter IC. This
“chaser circuit” was wired so that the LED’s flashed in a similar pattern found in the movies. In this case,
there are 10 LED’s. In this prototype, there is no sound effects.
