New Baptismal Font and Other Upgrades

Upon entering the church this weekend, you may notice something different in the area where the old baptismal font stood. You are not seeing things or imagining, work has begun for our new baptismal font and statues. The cost of the project will be taken directly from our “To Teach Who Christ Is” fund and no additional need for contributions will be necessary. The need for the baptismal font is something the parish has needed ever since it was determined that the old one was beyond repair. After contacting several reputable church art and furniture vendors, one was picked not by price only, but by the style of baptismal font offered. The process of drawing and planning has come to an end and the construction has begun with the hopes the font and other items will be completed by Easter. Along with the baptismal font, the church is also in need of two statues traditionally found in Roman Catholic churches. In the corner of the area where the baptismal font will be located will stand a traditional statue of the Blessed Mother. She will be placed on a pedestal with a permeant kneeler made out of stone complimenting the colors and textures of the church. Opposite the spot of the new Mary statue will be another statue of St. Joseph who will be placed in the area where our present Mary and Child are placed. The wood statue of Mother and Child will be professionally moved to the foyer of the school, where a statue will be suitable for a school with children. Wait! There is still more. The final piece will be a new holy water font in the narthex. After many years of good use, the top of the holy water font is becoming very warped. Fixing it is not a great option because the holy font is an extension of the baptismal font, whereby when we enter and leave the church, we sign ourselves with water reflecting our continued commitment to our own baptism and the promises made. The holy water font, albeit less ornate than the baptismal font, will be made using the same style so as to bring the connection of baptism and holy water ever closer in our minds. The present base of the holy water font will be recycled and will serve as the base for the St. Joseph statue. One of things that is so important about upgrading a space or adding new furnishings is to keep within the framework of the original architecture and style as best as one can. The commissioning of the baptismal font had one simple objective—even though it is new, it must look like it has been there from the beginning. Therefore, the baptismal font will fit seamlessly with our other structures such as the altar, ambo and presidential and deacon chairs. The color will match exactly and the floor around the font will be tastefully re-tiled to accentuate the importance of the font which facilitates baptism. The proposed upgrades will be finished off with some new electrical fixtures. One of them will be to light up the new Blessed Mother statue. The lights presently in the baptismal area are sufficient enough to illuminate the new font, so they will not be changed. However, the sconces on the walls in the church (the fluorescent fixtures barely hanging on the wall) which I call the “gutters” will be replaced and the stations repositioned on the wall in the same place to bring out those beautiful carvings all the more. There is a lot to accomplish before Easter, but hopefully all the plans will proceed without a hitch. Thank you in advance for your patience during the construction phase. I am confident that any inconvenience it will create will be well worth it. Fr. Tim

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time; World Marriage Day Monday: Our Lady of Lourdes; World Day of the Sick Tuesday: Lincoln’s Birthday Thursday: Ss. Cyril and Methodius; Valentine’s Day Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK

February 11 is World Day of the Sick, an observation started by Pope John Paul II as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. The day coincides with the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes. People around the world take the time to pray for the sick and for those who work very hard to alleviate the sufferings of the sick on this day. Faith organizations mark this day especially to provide the sick with medicines, food, and spiritual guidance.

Pope John Paul II initiated the day in 1992 to encourage people to pray for those who suffer from illness and for their caregivers. The Pope himself had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s a year before, in 1991, and it is considered that his own illness was impetus for his designation of the day. Pope Benedict XVI also declared his decision to resign from his post as the Pope on this day in 2013. He cited his failing health as the reason behind his decision.

This phrase is the commandment given us by Jesus in John 15:12. It speaks to us in a

simple but challenging way of how our Father wishes us to live. Loving one another

is a daily decision, simple but challenging.

GOD’S SUMMONS

Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.”

We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FEBRUARY 13 Dialogue, Tolerance & Peace

This day marks a time where people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities.
