The Daniel Compact Prover provides high accuracy,

rapid operation and continuous flow for proving a flowmeter in an operational line. This is accomplished withoutinterrupting normal flow and without the use of manuallyoperated bypass valves.

Its unique design features a patented piston assemblywith an internal poppet valve in conjunction with opticalposition sensing, hydraulic piston return, pneumatic pistonactuation and modern data processing techniques. Theresult is a complete packaged proving system significantlyreduced in size, weight and cost while equalling orexceeding the performance of conventional provers.

The Daniel Compact Prover offers flexible mounting

configurations on a truck or trailer for field proving of flowmeters, or can be permanently installed in a testing facilityeither vertically or horizontally.

Pulse interpolation electronics permit exact timedetermination and pulse counting which provides highaccuracy proving with a smaller volume and fewer flowmeter pulses than any previous prover technology. Theuse of a small displacement volume is made possible bythe high resolution of the Daniel Compact Prover which isattributed to two major factors; precision optical switches, and data acquisition using double chronometry.

Optical switches are used for defining prover volume by

detecting the piston position. These switches are reliable, precise and have a fast response time (5 x 10 -6 seconds).Data acquisition, using double chronometry, allows amuch higher degree of meter pulse resolution than the±1 pulse common to conventional pipe provers.

Control and operation of the Daniel Compact Prover isaccomplished by a microprocessor based device providingthe advanced electronic capabilities necessary for controlin proving volumetric or mass meters.

The Daniel Compact Prover conforms to design guidelinesprescribed in API Chapter 4.2 and Pulse Interpolationtechniques in API Chapter 4.6. All proving report formats

have been designed in accordance with API standard,Chapter 12 Calculation of Petroleum Quantities of the“Manual of Petroleum Measurement”.

Brooks® Compact Provers™ by Daniel®

High Accuracy Calibration Solutions for All Applications

The Brooks® Compact Prover™ by Daniel® is the product of decades of

development and engineering expertise, and offers the most cost-effectivemeter prover to the widest possible market.

The Compact Prover is used for rapid, accurate calibration of a wide rangeof ow measurement technologies. Applications range from load rack, crude

and rened product pipelines and marine terminals to offshore platforms.

Wherever meter verication is fundamental in reducing measurement

variation, the Brooks Compact Prover can be used.

Simplify ing Field Calibration

The Compact Prover is based on the principle of displacement proving. As dened by API, “ All types of displacement provers operate on the

princip le of the repeatable displacement of a known volume of liquid

from a calibrated section of pipe between two detectors.”   The CompactProver utilizes a piston that travels through a measurement section (withdetectors) displacing a known volume of liquid. At the same time a meter, inseries, measures the corresponding volume of liquid.

Through the use of pulse interpolation, meter proving can be accomplishedwith less than 10,000 pulses per pass. This allows for reliable proving withsmaller volumes.

The unique design of the Compact Prover enables a fast automated systemfor proving ow meters such as turbine, vortex, positive displacement,

magnetic, Coriolis as well as liquid ultrasonic ow meters.

Page 4

The Daniel Compact Prover is a highly refined displacementprover.

The design offers trouble free operation with unsurpassedlongevity.

Using a Compact Prover will bring increased versatility, fasterand more efficient proving, and will result in cost savings whencompared with any other meter proving technique.

Size is increasingly important in modern measurementinstallations. The cost of real estate on offshore platforms issuch that the Compact Prover is the only device given seriousconsideration in the design of these installations because of it’ssmall footprint and relative light weight.

Compact Provers are often trailer mounted and used at a numberof different metering sites. Trailer mounted Compact Provers havebeen used to replace many separate stationary provers on largeship loading jetties, for example.

The Compact Prover and its component parts are shown below. Theprover consists of a ow tube that houses a free oating piston with a

coaxially mounted poppet valve. The poppet valve is contained within theprover piston and is connected via the actuator shaft to the piston actuatorassembly. A set pressure in the pneumatic spring plenum, in combinationwith the hydraulic system, operates the piston. During the proving cycle, thepoppet valve closes and the owing stream displaces the piston over the

calibrated volume. In conditions of pulsating ow or varying back pressure,

it is essential to ensure the poppet remains closed during the proving cycle. The Compact Prover utilizes a nitrogen spring system to ensure the poppetvalve remains closed, and this may be relied upon under the worst surgeapplications.

The hydraulic system opens the poppet valve, returns the piston upstreamand holds the poppet valve open in the upstream position. The normal ow

of the uid will pass through the open valve.

The calibrated volume of the cylinder is detected by eld replaceable

optical switches, which are repeatableto within +/-0.0003” (0.0076mm). Thisvery high resolution is achieved throughthe use of precision components andmaterials. Three switches are used: onefor sensing the upstream position of thepiston assembly and two for dening the

displaced volume of the proving system. These signals are used to operate varioustimers in the prover electronics.

In addition, the Compact Prover is the only prover on the market thatminimizes the effects of ambient temperature changes on the volumethrough the use of Invar rods. Invar is a material which has an exceptionallylow coefcient of thermal expansion ( .0000008in/in/°F, .00000144mm/mm/°C) and two of these rods are used to maintain the distance between thevolume detector switches, thereby minimizing the effect of temperature onthe optical assembly.

Compact Prover Operation

The prover is in standby mode when the piston is in the upstream positionwith the poppet valve open. The standby mode is achieved and maintainedby applying hydraulic pressure to the downstream face of the actuator

piston.

Initiating the start of a provingpass causes the release ofhydraulic pressure in theactuator system, and thepneumatic spring plenumpressure overcomes the sealbearing friction, allowing thepoppet valve to close. Theclosed piston assembly willmove synchronously withthe continuous stream ofuid through the prover. The

nitrogen plenum systemassures that the poppetvalve remains closed duringthe proving pass. As thepiston assembly movesdownstream, the rst volume

detector switch is activated, signaling the beginning of theactual prove and counting ofpulses from the ow meter

under test.

At the end of the provingpass the nal switch is

activated, the prover pass iscomplete and the hydraulicsystem retracts the piston.During retraction the poppetvalve is open, allowing ow

through the prover, andonce the piston has fullyretracted it comes to rest inthe upstream, standby modeready for the next proving

pass.

Double chronometry pulse interpolation uses a high frequency master

oscillator which increments time to within 0.000001 seconds. The masteroscillator operates two counters, counter A and counter B. Counter A isstarted when the ag actuates the 2nd detector switch. Counter B is started

with the leading edge of the rst owmeter pulse after counter A has started.

Counter A is stopped when the ag actuates the nal 3rd detector switch.

Counter B is stopped with the leading edge of the rst owmeter pulse after

counter A has stopped. Using the ratio of counter A and counter B allows forthe determination of fractions of owmeter pulses collected.

Normally the Compact Prover utilizes three detector switches, which includeone for upstream (or “ready to prove” mode), with a brief pre-run to the 2ndswitch, which signals the start of the calibrated volume, and the 3rd switchthat signals the calibrated volume has been displaced. Daniel can supply

a Compact Prover with four optical switches, which allows the use of twocalibrated volumes. This set-up permits the more rapid proving of smallermeters. (For example, a 24-inch Compact Prover may be ideally suited toproving a 10-inch turbine meter, as well as a 3-inch turbine meter. The timetaken to prove the 3-inch meter may be reduced many-fold by the use of adual volume conguration in the prover).

New metering technologies offer various challenges in proving. Daniel has

successfully engineered proving solutions utilizing the Compact Prover toprove new technologies and offers complete design, manufacturing, serviceand support packages.

Where meter technologies result in the production of a “manufactured” pulseoutput (i.e. meter electronics may produce irregular or delayed totalizationpulses as a result of internal microprocessor activity), Daniel offersunparalleled expertise and application advice to allow the successful provingof such meters. For example, one preferred method of proving ultrasonicowmeters is to package the Compact Prover with a turbine owmeter.

The compact prover proves the turbine meter, and the turbine is used asthe Master Meter or “transfer standard” to prove the ultrasonic meter. TheMaster Meter proving technique complies to API Chapter 4.5. The additionof a densitometer to the prover allows for mass proving (as shown below)and offers a cost effective solution for proving mass meters such as Coriolismeters. The Compact Prover has been applied across many of thesenew technologies and Daniel is the predominant supplier of single sourceintegrated proving solutions.

Portable Proving

Pipeline Metering

High throughput pipelines have realized operational improvements whenutilizing dedicated Compact Provers for frequent proving. Due to the speedand ease with which a prove may be carried out with the Compact Prover,

proving may be carried out on each transaction.

Available in both static and mobile congurations,

the Daniel Compact Prover offers the most exible

and efcient way to prove pipeline ow meters,

and offers today’s pipeline operators the bestsolution for their proving needs, with customizedengineering as part of the Daniel’s core capabilities.

The Compact Prover’s small size and light weight allows any unit in therange to be truck or trailer mounted. These completely portable proversmay then be used for calibrating various sizes of meters at numerouslocations. The nominal rangeability of the Compact Prover is 1000:1, whichmeans that any reasonable range of owmeters - and beyond - may be

proven with a single Compact Prover.

configurations on a truck or trailer for field proving of flowmeters, or can be permanently installed in a testing facilityeither vertically or horizontally.
