Proverbs 17:27 “He who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.” When I was a kid, I would occasionally pet some of my Uncle Ed’s horses. Horses were (and still are) very majestic animals. As a child, it seemed like horses towered high above; into the sky. On one particular day, my uncle and his crew were trying to “break in” a new horse. This horse had never been ridden by a human. As I looked on in excitement (and a little fear), I was amazed by the horse. It seemed like he was ALL muscle! He was powerful, intimidating, intense, angry, and stubborn. He was mad because someone was trying to make him do something he didn’t want to do; something new that he had never done before. All his spirit inside could do was fight; until he was used to the bridle and his new master. Proverbs 17:27 reminds me a lot about that day at my uncle’s house. Just as my uncle and his crew were trying to restrain a horse, so God’s Word wants to restrain our words, feelings, and actions. If we can keep our words clean and holy even when we want to lash out, then that means God’s Word is having an effect on our lives. It means that we have true knowledge; God’s heavenly knowledge. A few weeks later I went back to my uncle’s house and I saw that same horse. It was a different horse. It was calm, cool, and collected. It ate and played with all the other horses. Most importantly, not only did the horse not fuss when someone tried to ride him, he looked at peace when he was out for a trot. Why the sudden change? Because the horse had come to an understanding. He realized that the bridle he once feared as controlling was now operated by someone he trusted; someone who could help guide his muscle, speed, and agility. The horse had someone who could give him direction. God’s Word is God’s way of giving His children guidance and direction. Those who refuse to surrender to His Word are most likely angry and stubborn. They try to intimidate others with their false power. However, those that surrender to God and His Word allow Him to restrain their hearts; which controls their thoughts and mouths. They have a heavenly understanding in all the world brings their way. So, they have a cool spirit given to them by the coolest spirit of all, The Holy Spirit. Proverbs 17:27

“He who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.”

When I was a kid, I would occasionally pet some of my Uncle Ed’s horses. Horses were (and still are) very majestic animals. As a child, it seemed like horses towered high above; into the sky. On one particular day, my uncle and his crew were trying to “break in” a new horse. This horse had never been ridden by a human. As I looked on

in excitement (and a little fear), I was amazed by the horse.
