It is with great pleasure that we present our annual showcase of community giving. This year, we surpassed $17 million in total giving since The Provident BankFoundation’s inception. It was an exceptional year and we are proud to havesupported more than 300 organizations in our 11-county giving area with continued or new support.
This year presented unique challenges to our community, which is why 2012 also marked the debut of a Request for Proposal (RFP) program – SuperStorm Sandy Relief and Recovery. Our board allocated an additional $250,000in funding to help small businesses in New Jersey impacted by the storm. Werecognize that the relief and recovery period is ongoing, and we are committedto helping communities most affected for the duration of these efforts.
As we approach a decade of service, we also look back and recognize the Foundation’s many accomplishments, many of which were achieved throughthe great work of our executive director of seven years, Kendall Warsaw. We are extremely grateful and appreciative of all that she has done in makingthe Foundation successful in its mission.
We are excited to welcome Jane Kurek as the new executive director. Jane hasbeen a part of the Provident family since 2007. She joined the Bank as communityrelations manager when Provident acquired First Morris Bank & Trust. We lookforward to Jane’s efforts to build upon the Foundation successes.
In 2013, we will commemorate 10 years of serving communities throughout thestate. It is our privilege to continue support of valuable organizations – such asthose featured here – that are dedicated to enhancing our communities andimproving the lives of New Jersey residents.

Today’s global economy is highly dependent onscience, technology, engineering and math (STEM).Yet, the number of college degrees in these disciplines is decreasing in the U.S. In fact, onlyfive percent of U.S. undergraduates earn collegedegrees in science and engineering.
One organization is trying to change this by improving scientific literacy in the community. Students 2 Science in East Hanover operates amodern chemistry laboratory for the sole purposeof providing students with a hands-on science andtechnology experience.
A $5,000 grant from The Provident Bank Foundationgave students from Discovery Charter School inNewark the opportunity to participate in the organization’s ISAAC (Improving Student Affinityand Aptitude for Careers in STEM) laboratory program. Students worked with professional scientists in a high-tech laboratory environment.
“The scientists were wonderful to work with andour students cannot say enough good thingsabout the experiments they conducted and thethings they learned,” said a Discovery CharterSchool teacher.
The ISAAC program focuses on changing students’attitude toward pursuing a career in a science, technology, engineering and math-related field,as well as improving students’ aptitude with thesubject matter.
“Students 2 Science gets children excited aboutmath and science and instills confidence in students. It’s a terrific program where students conducthands-on experiments while working side-by-sidewith professionals,” said Jane Kurek, executive director of The Provident Bank Foundation.

New Jersey may be the Garden State, rich withfarmland, but many people have little or no access to farm-fresh foods.
America’s Grow-a-Row (AGAR) in Pittstown aimsto change that by bringing fresh foods directly tothose who need it most. In 2012, the organizationdonated 328,000 pounds of fresh produce toinner-city communities.

A farmer’s market was held in bothcities every other week for 14 weeks offering asolid selection of free, healthy produce. The markets also provided instruction on how to prepare new food options that can improve thehealth of these communities.
In addition, youth and residents were invited toAGAR’s farm in Pittstown to harvest fresh fruitsand vegetables to bring home to their families.
“Many of our children thought picking vegetableswas picking a can from the shelves; the farm hasintroduced them to healthy eating,” said KymGilchrist, a participant in the Newark Free FarmMarket. “The farm can change the trajectory ofmany lives in Newark.”
“The farm is immensely important to the community, introducing urban families to farming and thebenefits of eating healthy,” said Jane Kurek, executive director of The Provident Bank Foundation.“Residents learning to grow their own food andsustaining the new healthy eating habits they created – that is a true measure of success.”
