Editorial by Sarah Phew, lets all take a quiet moment to mark the end of the summer, whether that means that you have the children back to school, said goodbye to the last of the visitors, either personal or the pasty munchers in Bude, (why, oh! why do they walk so slowly?) or just means that you can finally accept that there is going to be no summer and you can break out the winter woollies again. As I think back to my summer, one of the highlights has got to be the Jubilee celebrations in the village. Did you all see the photos in the last edition of the Journal? The way everyone came together was amazing, I think we all started to get that ‘village people’ feeling and I am not talking YMCA!. Do you think we could carry that feeling on into winter, when the weather is not so good and you just want to draw the curtains and snuggle down. I hear people saying about how we don’t have that elusive village feel sometimes and maybe put it down to not having a shop or pub in the middle of the village. If you look at the diary in the middle of this edition you will see events that are going on all the time, including our Quiz night, plug plug. All of these things have to be conceived and organized by dedicated volunteers, who I am sure do not want to experience that feeling of “why do I bother”. Make our village interesting... show an interest! I am sure you won’t regret it. Thank you to all the members of the Jacobstow Journal who attended our AGM , it was a very productive meeting, and if any member who did not attend would like to see a copy of the minutes please let me know. CHURCH ROOF REPAIRS by Ruth Fox

The scaffolding is going up, but there is so much of it, it will take three weeks to complete this element of the job. The actual work will not be completed until the final day of November. The Church and Churchyard are now closed for health and safety reasons until 30th November.

As soon as the scaffolding is finished the contractor, Nova Construction of Truro, will open a site office within the Church yard precincts

Services are still being held but for the time being they are held in Jacobstow School Hall. A list of services and service times is on the church gate and the notice board by the shop. This will mean that for any urgent special services such as a baptisms or funerals etc, people will need to contact one of the church wardens or Rob Dickenson so that alternative arrangements can be made.

The Church is very grateful to the school who have made us very welcome.

This year the Harvest Festival will be held in the school hall with a Harvest supper and auction to follow in the Parish Hall. We hope to be able to have a Remeberence service also in the Parish Hall on 11th November in the late afternoon. The church carol service is scheduled for December 2nd but this also will be in the School Hall. Posters will be put up to announce any alterations to these arrangements.

A fishy tale..... A doctor in Hampshire was famous for always catching large fish and had many trophies to prove it. One day while he was on one of his frequent fishing trips he got a call that a woman at a nearby farm was giving birth. He hurried to her aid and delivered a healthy boy. The farmer had nothing to weigh the baby with so the Doctor used his fishing scales. Mother and her 22 pound 10 ounce baby are doing well!

JACOBSTOW COMMUNITY SCHOOL

At Jacobstow Primary School and Preschool we enjoyed a fantastic start to our new school year with an Outdoor Education day and whole school camp. We are great believers that children should learn through experience and this day was a great way for the children to learn from their environment, through sport, through cooperation and teamwork. We are very lucky to have lovely school grounds

and walks that encourage the children to have an interest in and learning from their immediate environment and we like to make the most of it.

Our day was filled with challenges, fun and lots of learning, and amazingly the sun shone! We

worked hard to get our teams across ‘shark infested waters’, to transport water, to protect falling eggs and to build creative works using natural materials. We raced, jumped and scored goals with a

mini sports day to replace the one we had to postpone because of bad weather. We hunted for ‘treasure’ , played hide and seek and had our ‘midnight’ walk and then we slept in the

hall; it was great!

Thanks to all the staff who gave up their time to stay and especially to Joanne and Angie for cooking our tea.

OLYMPICS We were there! What an amazing experience! We had tickets to watch Basketball and Athletics, so had to travel to the Olympic Park twice. We had been anxious about the time it might take us to get there but the journey in and out via train and tube was easy

with no delays. Stratford was busy, but you go with the flow! It took 20 minutes to walk to the entrance to the Olympic Park and another 30 minutes to the Basketball Arena which gives you some idea of the size of the place. Security was stringent but no long queues - much better than Heathrow! We watched 2 Basketball matches in a morning session, great atmosphere and lots of noise! We spent the afternoon exploring the Park. The Velodrome and Aquatic Centre were stunning structures with green areas planted with wild flowers and grasses. You could sit on a grassed bank area and watch the Big Screen, joining in with the cheering and shouting even though the event might have been sailing or rowing which were at other venues. The highlight for us was going in to the Athletics Stadium for a morning session. We watched Usain Bolt win his 200 metres heat, Women's Javelin, Men's Triple Jump and the Women's 5000 metres. We waved our flags and joined in with the huge support for the athletes. The atmosphere was something we had never experienced before. We both feel privileged to have been there and done it! London certainly delivered! Claire & Tony Simmons

The Wainhouse Corner Telephone Box

The Scouts kindly volunteered to clean the filthy Telephone Box situated outside the Wainhouse stores .

BT, however, refused the offer because of Health and Safety Regulations!!!!!!!

British Telecom say they will send somebody out to clean it.

Well done the Scouts for bringing the state of the box to BT’s attention but we will have to wait until BT take action–- Watch this space!

Retirement of two long serving members of the Parish Council

Jacobstow Parish Council regrettably accepted the resignation of two of its longest serving members, Mrs June Rose and Mr. Jim Cory. June has been a Jacobstow Councillor for twelve years and Jim has been a Councillor for fifty years. Jim was a Parish Councillor at St

Gennys for twenty years before moving to Jacobstow and then a member of Jacobstow Parish Council for thirty years. Both will be missed after their long and valuable

Prepare for the worst in rural locations - Councillors Report

Is it going to be a mild or cold winter? Is there going to be snow?I am prepared to tell you the answers to all these questions – in six months time! Not much use knowing after the event. One way or the other we have got through it. We will also know how we coped and how our neighbours have coped. We can of course prepare for the worst with simple plans. But before I discuss plans can I

Phil Tucker

say that the most likely injury this winter is the most avoidable. Broken bones. When it is frozen go out in the afternoon to get provisions and your paper. It is vital that you avoid that common slip on ice. Change your habits and realise that a broken wrist is going to change your life more than not having the daily blurb for a few hours. In over 65’s most people slip on ice and break a bone between 7am and 11am. Enough food for 7 days (tinned, dried and fresh) A 25kg bag of potatoes, a bag of carrots and meat in the freezer and you will pretty well get through any snowfall sent. Other tinned food and dried food (like porridge oats) is a real bonus. Microwave meals food is almost useless if the power is off. A gas primus or gas stove You may lose electricity and gas if freezing conditions persist. You may need this for cooking food and melting snow. Matches, Candles, torch and battery radio. If possible a mobile phone. You will need to light the cooker and see. The radio will keep you entertained and informed. The mobile phone will have limited battery after one day if the power is off. Keep warm (the most important) If the power is on and you are older then turn up the heating. It won’t cost much more and certainly will be cheaper than being ill. If the power is off the temperature inside you home will rapidly drop. You may need to seriously consider moving to a friend or family member for the duration of the power cut. Make this decision early because hypothermia is a real danger. If for some reason you can’t move (and by this I mean the snow makes it impractical not because you dont want to be a bother because you won’t be) then sleeping bags, warm drinks, warm food often. You will need to eat and drink more than usual. This Month (October or November) Form into help groups with young and old members in a area. Each member of the group has a list of phone numbers of the other members. Don’t be afraid to ask if they are ok regulary and don’t be offended if you are called, be reassured if you need helo that someone will notice. Don’t hesitate to ask for something or offer something. Most severe weather lasts less than a week or two. Don’t go out in icy conditions if you need to go out in early afternoon. If you have any issues which you feel are not being properly addressed or which you need help then please don’t hesitate to give me a call.Phil Tucker 01288 341617 [email protected] Page 13

Pumpkin are very topical at the moment so keep an eye on them because they will spoil if you don’t protect them from slugs, snails and frosts, so put them on bits of old slate or stone to keep the underneath from rotting. Once harvested, all squashes and pumpkins will keep until Christmas if kept in frost free conditions. You should have your spring cabbageS planted by now, if not get some plants and put them in straight away for spring greens. Plant them about a foot apart, you can take out every other one for greens. If you like garlic, plant it now to give it a long growing season. Buy a couple of heads and split them into cloves, push them into the ground so that the top is just showing. The same goes for Japanese over wintering onions. Now is the time to take cuttings of hardy trees and shrubs. Cut a length of mature wood, trim the bottom so a bud is just above the base. The top needs to bud just below the top, bury this cutting so the top half is just above the ground. Now you should be digging your plot ready for next year and putting in some feed at the same time. I have five compost bins and dig one in every winter but in a different part of the plot because not every vegetable needs feeding every year, stuff like onions and garlic don’t like the ground too rich because it causes white rot on the roots Happy gardening and if you have any questions give me a call on 230565

Jacobstow successes at St Gennys Horticultural Show, July 25th

Jacobstow was well represented among the successful entries at the above show. The children did especially well with Sion, Cerys and Bethany

Osborne and Joshua and Michael Cobbledick picking up several 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. Mr. Ivor Davidson was particularly successful winning the Novice Cup for attaining 1st and 3rd prizes for various vegetables and flowers.

Mrs M Osborne, Mrs A. Brooks and New Witheven Workshops also did well winning various 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes . Well done to all the above.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE VISIT Well after all the pomp, circumstance and ceremony of this fantastic summer with the Jubilee, the Olympics and the Paralympics, John and I took ourselves to the capital for just one day. We booked a visit to Buckingham Palace which was absolutely brilliant, after being in a lot of stately homes and National Trust properties, this

really does top the lot. The Jubilee Diamond Exhibition was mind blowing, unfortunately they wouldn’t let you take home any samples!!

Tea in the Palace gardens was the crowning glory (even if we needed a bank loan to pay for it!!!) the only disappointment was that the tea came in paper cups!!!

Walking down the Mall where all the Olympic Marathons took place and with

all the bunting still around was amazing. Past the House of Commons where hopefully all the politicians were eventually back from holiday and the London Eye was great. Then back to lovely green peaceful Cornwall. You can’t beat it!!! Jo Afford

JACOBSTOW W.I. NEWS At the September 13th meeting, Mrs Francesca Vincent demonstrated Textile Art to members showing many beautiful examples of her art and even assembling a piece much to the admiration of the audience. Using black velvet, coloured foil, sequin waste and raffia the art took shape using a hot iron and very clever sewing machining. Thanks to a business grant from the Bude, Council Francesca was able to start her own studio in the old museum on the Canal Wharf in Bude where visitors are able to watch her at work and buy her handiwork. The competition for the evening was won by Mrs Jen Cowling. At the Holsworthy show Jacobstow W.I. came 2nd for their display entitled ”The Olympics” and 3rd overall. Pat lane won the YFC raffle, a toy wheelbarrow full of sweets, lucky grandchildren!!!!!! Subscriptions have again been raised and are now £33. The Group Meetings will not be run by the Cornwall Federation in future but will be organised voluntarily by the group itself. The Birthday lunch on October 28th will be held at The Eagle House Launceston. Mrs Pat Lane will be holding a Mulled Wine evening at her home on Saturday 8th December at 7.00 p.m, raffle and Bring and Buy stall, in aid of W.I. funds. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 11th October at 7.30 with a talk by Katie Zoeftig on her visit to Nepal. On Thursday 8th November at 7.30 p.m, the speaker will be David Sargent giving a cookery demonstration.

WALKING THE JAMES WAY with Mary Carter Old School House - 01840230656

Please join us for a celebratory walk on 2 November 2012. We will meet at the Old School House, Jacobstow at 10.30 am and gather at Watergate at 11 am for the official opening. I should, perhaps say, reopening of this ancient sunken lane that is part of the pilgrims route to Santiago de Compostella in Northern Spain. A very big THANK YOU to Mr James Parks of Titchen Farm who has so generously allowed this walk to happen at his own expense. Thanks also, Roy, for the graft! It is now such a delight to walk to Blagdon. We will then continue though Blagdon and on to Poulza Post via the kissing gate that was awarded to Gerald Uglow for his generous spirit when we were opening the footpaths. The walk continues though Poulza Post land, a small copse and across the field to the lane. Then enter the wood. Here folk could shorten the walk by going down Poulza Lane and back to Watergate and the village. The walk will continue though the wood and along the edge of the field where I can point out other possible walks. We will then join path 5 that was once the ancient cart track that linked Jacobstow to Week St Mary .We will continue into the copse that was cleared by local families in 1996 (Do you remember the well earned bacon baps and baked bananas?). Continuing across 2 fields to enter into Ash's courtyard, follow the lane over the ford and up to the Week St Mary and Jacobstow road and back to the village to the Old School House for a lunch of Bread and Cheese. Rain or shine......

The walk is around 4 miles and takes 1 ½ to 2 hours. Proper foot wear is a must and dogs on leads please. We will celebrate The James Way with the school children by doing this walk on Friday afternoon of 26 October as well. Please note the walk may

have to be slightly changed if conditions are muddy. I would be happy to guide walks around Jacobstow footpaths if anyone is interested on Friday Autumn mornings.

WEATHERWISE by MONITOR

July continued the previous months trend with 4.5” of rain collected at Canworthy Water. Significant rain fell on 19 days, with only the 23rd-28th producing a reasonably dry spell. 24oC was recorded on the 26th.

7th July South Devon had a severe weather report of 4” of rain in a 10 hour period. Here there were heavy rain showers, but locally the 12th was the wettest day, with .87” collected in the 24 hr period. A heavy river flow was observed also on the 18th.

August was the wettest month so far this year, 6.75” being collected in total. A very heavy downpour was recorded on the 5th, with 1.34” falling in a very short period (2hrs) causing a considerable surface water collection on the road junction here. A situation which repeated itself the following morning. On the 5th, a thunderstorm was noted some 6 miles to the NNW, this being the first observed here this year. Only the 10th produced a really clear sunny day, but the 8th to 13th were fairly warm and humid.

The Tropical Atlantic is very busy, with 13 named storms to date of which 7 have had hurricane status. The Azores had a close brush recently with Hurricane “Gordon”, the 2nd time in 6 years that a storm of this name had come across to the Islands. “Kirk” was an example of a mid-latitude hurricane which turned north east towards the British Isles and recently brought strong winds and heavy rain to the far north of the country. Such storms are designated as “extra-tropical”.

LOCK IN and LOCK OUT

In September, the 3 year old Morwenna, the replica of a gaff rigged sailing cutter, entered the Bude Canal in lovely sunny weather.

She arrived amid cameras and crowds as it was part of Dick Strawbridge’s new series about food around the coast of Cornwall.

WEBBERS ESTATE AGENTS Well, what a year it has been with Jubilee Celebrations, the Olympics and Paralympics, which have been such a phenomenal success. I think many buyers have been too

wrapped up with what was going on in the country to really concentrate and focus their minds on moving through the summer. August is traditionally a tricky month with people on holiday and children home from school. Here in Bude we can feel very busy, but, the productive nature of the business is pretty negligible. W e do remain optimistic that September, October and November will be decent sales months, with stronger activity from committed buyers. In the past two years these have been our best consecutive sale months of the year. However, with the on going doom and gloom about the economy, I feel sure the need for sensible pricing and good quality marketing will remain a must if you really need to sell your property. Remeberance Sunday and the Poppy appeal

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the First World War ended. Civilians wanted to remember the

people who had given their lives for peace and freedom. An American War Secretary, Moina Michael, inspired by John McCrae's poem,"In Flanders' Fields", began selling poppies to friends to raise money for the ex-service community. The Legion adopted the poppy for its fundraising in 1921 - and so the tradition began. To date the

2011 poppy appeal has raised £39,774,990 Poppy Factory

In 1922 Major George Howson, a young infantry officer, formed the Disabled Society to help disabled ex-Service men and women from

the First World War. Howson suggested to the Legion that members of the Disabled Society could make poppies and the Poppy

Factory was subsequently founded in Richmond in 1922. The original poppy was designed so that workers with a disability could

easily assemble it and this principle remains today.

Some of the bloodiest fighting of World War one took place in the Flanders and Picard regions of Belgium and Northern France.

The poppy was the only thing which grew in the aftermath of the complete devastation.

John McCrae, a doctor serving there with the Canadian Armed forces, deeply inspired and moved by what he saw wrote these verses in 1915

In Flanders’ Fields By John McCrae

In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below

We are the dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders’ fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high,

If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders’ Fields.

, INTERVIEW WITH BOB REASON by Jeanne Gimblett

It was twelve years ago when Bob and Marion Reason found and purchased a fire damaged cottage in the centre of Jacobstow. They planned to renovate it for their holiday home. A daunting prospect! In spite of many adventures and difficulties they achieved their goal and now they have made Penhallym Cottage their permanent home; although that was not to be the end of the story because Bob became even more entrenched in village life when he became secretary to the Parish Hall Committee. I asked Bob how he got ‘the job’ . “Oh” he said, “I just went to a meeting and stuck up my hand.” A typically modest reply from someone who works hard on our behalf. What does this voluntary job entail? Bob explained that the Parish Hall is let out for both community and private functions and he sees to all the bookings and payments concerning these. As we can see from the Journal this involves everything from church meetings to private parties and Parish Council meetings to Christmas lunches, not to mention quiz nights and WI meetings. You name it the Parish Hall will be able to

accommodate it. Events need tables and chairs, clean floors, safe kitchens and adequate heating. Most of the time it is Bob whom we rely on to organise this. You may think that this is quite a lot to take on single handed but Bob told me that he valued the backing he has from the Parish Hall committee (nine people in all) and many other volunteers, including Roz and Sue who help out with “the odd bit of typing”.

Nevertheless, at the end of the day someone has to do the ‘doing’ and it is usually Bob whom we see there. During the last six years the Parish Hall committee have had to renew the flat roofing, there are new double glazed front windows and recently the fire doors have been replaced by warmer double glazed door . Bob tells me that a brand new Wall Kettle has been ordered ; this will be thermostatically controlled and ensure that there is boiling water when it is needed. The next project will involve replacing the chairs, some of which are more than fifty years old. It seems obvious to me that our twelve and fifteen pounds a session is not going to cover such capital expenditure.

Page 36

Page 37: Providing news and information for the Parish of Jacobstow ... › journals › oct12.pdf · the weather is not so good and you just want to draw the curtains and snuggle down. I

Interview of the month continued

Bob explained how most major works entailed applying for grants and charitable donations . This is a thankless task with many unsuccessful applications to every successful one. I expect everyone realises that a hall let out to the public has to comply with all sorts of regulations and needs Public Liability Insurance, not to mention, annual boiler Safety Certificates and service. Checking and keeping up with everything is part and parcel of the job and we should all be very grateful to Bob for undertaking this on our behalf. When he is not looking after the Parish Hall how does Bob spend his time? He told me that he looks after the garden and his chickens, enjoys the company of children and grandchildren, works at his part time taxi job, fulfils his role on the Parish Council and (would you believe!) undertakes the bookings for the National Trust in this area. Isn’t there an old saying “If you want a job done ask a busy man”?

ADULT EDUCATION Did you browse in the “Learn Enjoy Succeed” booklet which come through our doors in August? It’s that time of year again when one should try and “improve” oneself with Further Education. No longer do we have to turn up at the appropriate hall or school to sign on, it can all be done on-line (www.cornwall.gov.uk/adultlearning). However to those traditionalists booking can also be made:- By phone - 03001231117 This is the number for all enquires By post - form on leaflet back and send to the address in St Austell.
