Provisional GCSE Results 2017 Building on our recent, excellent A Level and primary academy results, we are now delighted to share our provisional GCSE headline results for 2017. Across all LAT academies, roughly 6 in 10 pupils have achieved the new “Standard Pass” of a grade 4 in both English and maths. Students have attained well across the full range of subjects and most will take up places from September in one of the Trust’s post-16 centres offering A Levels, BTECs and the new International Baccalaureate Careers-related Programme. Especially pleasing is the best set of results on record for Mascalls Academy and The Leigh UTC, plus Wilmington Academy, which has achieved its best results in recent years since reforms of the Gove-era began to take hold. Simon Beamish, Chief Executive of Leigh Academies Trust, commented: “It’s all change again at GCSE. This year sees the introduction of much more demanding courses in English and maths. The content students have been expected to cover this year is much wider- ranging and academically more challenging than before. All assessment is now by terminal examination at the end of year 11 with no opportunities for written or spoken coursework like in previous years. “Despite the greater demands placed on students and the high rates of volatility in school performance widely reported across the media, students throughout LAT have achieved admirably. I am very proud of them and hugely grateful to all of our staff for their hard work and endless support. When the dust settles on this year’s results, I am confident that our academies will emerge yet again as amongst the best in the region.” % of students achieving 9-4 (A*-C) in English and maths GCSE. GCSE Results 2016-17

The Leigh Academy

At The Leigh Academy we are proud to have maintained our high standards at GCSE level in a year when the Government has introduced numerous changes to our examination systems, including terminal exams, increased difficulty across a range of subjects and a new grading system.

Our results are testimony to the dedication, hard work and perseverance of students, staff and parents and we are delighted that large numbers of our students will be returning to us to study A-levels, the new, exciting International Baccalaureate Careers Programme and

a host of BTECs.

In addition to excellent achievements in both English and maths, we are exceptionally proud of our students’ performance in computer science, engineering, history, hospitality and catering, ICT and photography.

Mrs Collins and Miss McGill, Principals at The Leigh Academy, said: “We are exceptionally proud of our students. In this difficult year of change they have proved they can rise to the challenge and ensure that they are successful. We are looking forward to welcoming our students back to post-16, where they will continue their educational journey.”

Longfield Academy

Longfield Academy is proud to have produced yet another year of impressive results and we have enjoyed spending the morning celebrating with our students!

Despite a new grading system and more rigorous qualifications, our English and maths results remained stable, with both subjects pleased to report over 60% of students achieving grades 9-4. Both subjects saw some incredibly

high-achieving students. In English language, Sam Head obtained a spectacular grade 9, which puts him amoung the top 5% of students nationally.

Music and performing arts both delivered another year of outstanding results achieving 100% pass rates.

Principal Alex O’Donnell said: “Those students receiving excellent results today have done so because of the hard work they have put in and the dedication and support provided by staff. Just as important, the buoyant atmosphere at the Academy this morning demonstrates the strength of our community and the well-rounded young adults that our students have become. I continue to be immensely proud to lead Longfield Academy.”

Special recognition should go to a number of our students:

Sam Head: one 9, one A*, four As, Distinction, one 7 and one B

Keith Ellis, Chair of Governors, MD Kenard Engineering:

"I’m delighted to congratulate all the students on their excellent results this year. They’re to be commended for all their hard work and should be very proud of what they’ve achieved. It’s extremely encouraging to see the positive learning experience of students and the superb support provided by the dedicated team at The Leigh UTC translating into opportunities for students to realise their highest potential. The results also continue to demonstrate the benefits of a business-led, problem-solving curriculum, which is so important for employers and for young people at the start of their careers.”

Steve Leahey:

“One of our core aims is to get more girls into engineering and IT. Our girls have excelled this year and will be role models for those choosing STEM careers in the future. Following on from the excellent post-16 results last week, and the large number of students taking up jobs within engineering and IT or going to university this is a resounding vindication of our approach and of the hard work of staff and students alike, we are delighted. As this is only our second year of results, it’s extremely impressive to see how fast our UTC is developing. We will be taking our first students from age 11 in September 2017”.

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy

The Academy’s initial analysis shows that a number of subjects have performed very strongly. Almost a quarter of the 264 students in the year group secured top grades in English, while science has improved its performance overall with more students securing top grades. Students have excelled in RE and

there are strong performances in Spanish, PE and sociology.

David Millar, Principal, said: “I would like to congratulate all students on their achievements. These results reflect five years of hard work and determination. Students and staff have worked extremely hard to achieve this level of success. I would like to congratulate the class of 2017 for their commitment and positivity throughout year 11” - Wayne Barnett, Principal.

Wilmington Academy

Our students have done extremely well and have achieved our best results since 2013. 60% A*-C (4-9) in English and maths and strong performances in other subjects with many students achieving the top 7/8/9 A*/A grades despite the exams being much harder. The students worked really hard and coped well with the extra pressure that has been placed upon them. The results day in the Lecture Theatre was an absolute joy with so many students and families

delighted when opening their envelopes.

The most important thing is the impact this has on the life chances of our students with high numbers opting to stay on in Post 16 and others progressing to college and apprenticeships. None of this would be possible without the dedication and commitment of our brilliant staff.

‘It’s days like today that make everything worthwhile’ Tracey Trusler - Principal
