We take as much of the stress and strain of the long journey ‘down under’ by making 24-hour stopovers in Dubai on both the outbound and homeward journeys, staying at the Marco Polo Hotel which is located close to the airport, alongside final approach: the hotel has 4 restaurants, café, English pub (bar meals and live entertainment) and swimming pool and is very popular with our groups. The tour price includes general admission to the Avalon airshows; but not those in New Zealand as we await the release of the standard entry charge - and any optional upgrades that will be available at a supplement. Flights are from London’s Heathrow Airport on the scheduled services of Qantas; we stay in superior-standard, comfortable hotels with private facilities (most have in-room tea/coffee-making machines), on a bed and breakfast basis throughout the tour; surface travel is by air-conditioned charter coach (please see appropriate paragraph in General Information) - our driver in New Zealand, John, is first-rate, is an aviation enthusiast and knows our groups very well; and we are accompanied at all times by an Ian Allan Tour Manager who has travelled this itinerary before.

On our previous tours enthusiasts have extended their holiday in New Zealand and/or Australia, and even continued around the world returning via the USA, or going on to visit Singapore, Thailand, Japan etc; we will be very happy to discuss and/or arrange your additional requirements. Limited by time or funds? Then why not consider a shorter tour. For example, missing out one or both stopovers in Dubai on the outward and/or return journeys. We expect this 22-day tour to be very popular as the opportunity to visit 3 major airshows on consecutive weekends, in this part of the world, is a rare occurrence. We have purposely not repeated the same itineraries of our highly successful tours of New Zealand in 2014 and 2016, so as to offer you something different.

PROVISIONAL ITINERARY (all times local) DAY 1: TUESDAY, 14th FEBRUARY Between 17:00 and 18:35 please meet your Ian Allan Tour Manager and fellow enthusiasts, in Qantas Airline’s check-in area located in Departures in Terminal 3 at London’s Heathrow Airport. Latest check-in time for the Airbus A380 flight to Dubai is 18:35. Heathrow Airport, Terminal 3 Flight: QF 002 Departs: 20:35

DAY 2: WEDNESDAY, 15th FEBRUARY Dubai Arrives: 07:35 After Immigration, Baggage Reclaim and Customs we transfer by coach to the neighbouring Emirate of Sharjah, about a 30-minutes drive away. We visit the Al Mahatta Museum, better known as the Sharjah Aviation Museum, which is located in the old Operations Block on the original RAF Sharjah airfield. Along with lots of photographs and memorabilia this very interesting museum has a small collection of aircraft, mostly in Gulf Air colours, and a DH Comet cockpit and Auster: see photo right. Shortly before midday we arrive back in Dubai and check in at the 4-star Marco Polo Hotel. As enjoyed by our previous groups, we will again ask for permission to take photographs of landing aircraft from the roof. Website: http://www.marcopolohotel.net/ Remainder of the day is at leisure.

DAY 3: THURSDAY, 16th FEBRUARY After breakfast we board our coach at 06:30 and transfer to Dubai Airport where we check in with Qantas for our A380 flight to Sydney: latest check-in time is 07:35. Dubai Flight: QF 002 Departs: 09:35

DAY 4: FRIDAY, 17th FEBRUARY Sydney Arrives: 06:30 As transit passengers we remain airside: time to stretch our legs before boarding our connecting flight to Wellington at 08:55. Sydney Flight: QF 161 Departs: 09:45 Wellington Arrives: 14:55 After completing the usual entry formalities, in the Arrival’s Hall we are welcomed by John our local coach driver and transfer the 60 miles to Masterton. Here we check-in to the fabulous 4* Copthorne Hotel and Resort Solway Park for 3 nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Facilities include on-site restaurant, bar and heated swimming pool. Website: https://www.millenniumhotels.com/en/wairarapa/copthorne-hotel-resort-solway-park-wairarapa/?cid=gplaces-CopRWairarapa Many airshow pilots stay here as it is only a short 15-minutes walk from Hood airfield.

DAYS 5 & 6: SATURDAY, 18th & SUNDAY, 19th FEBRUARY Two fabulous days at the “Wings Over Wairarapa 2017” airshow, one of New Zealand’s largest and best aviation events which is held every 2 years. Details of participants are yet to be released but you can expect to see a good number of New Zealand based warbirds from WW1 (including the truly outstanding replicas built for Peter Jackson by The Vintage Aviator – see paragraph below) - to WWII. Bill Reid’s recently restored Avro Anson is absolutely fabulous. There will be various ‘aviation’ stalls and military vehicles. The coach will depart the hotel each morning at 08:00 and return after the flying programme finishes.

However, you have the option to walk to and/or from the show as Hood airfield is only about 1 mile away. The coach could well be stuck in traffic trying to get in to and out of the show! The NZ Sport and Vintage Aviation Society (SVAS) collection includes Tiger Moths, a rare Percival Proctor, an ex-RNZAF Harvard and an original 1930’s J3 Piper Cub. Website: www.facebook.com/svasnz The Old Stick & Rudder Company houses a unique collection of classic WWI and WWII aircraft all of which have a strong connection with New Zealand and its aviation history. A feature of the collection is that nearly all of the aircraft are in perfect flying condition including a FG-1D Corsair, P-40E Kittyhawk, Percival Piston Provost, 2 DHC Chipmunks and an Avro 504K and more than a dozen replicas of the Great War. DAY 7: MONDAY, 20th FEBRUARY This morning we drive back to Wellington and sail on the 14:45 car ferry across the Cook Straits, arriving in Picton on the shores of Queen Charlotte Sound on the South Island, at 17:55. The last part of the cruise through the magnificent Marlborough Sounds is especially scenic and reminiscent of Norwegian fjords. Re-boarding our coach we drive 18 miles south to the town of Blenheim, staying 2 nights at the 4-star Chateau Marlborough Hotel, facilities include tea/coffee makers, licensed restaurant, bar, swimming pool (with bar) and free Wi-Fi. The centre of the town is only a 2-minutes walk away. Website: http://www.marlboroughnz.co.nz/

DAY 8: TUESDAY, 21st FEBRUARY This morning we visit nearby Omaka aerodrome. Here we visit the Omaka Aviation Heritage Museum where their exhibition “Knights of the Sky” includes one of the world’s largest private collections of rare WWI aircraft: approximately 3,000 sq metres of purpose-built display area and accommodates both WWI aircraft and rare memorabilia in a mix of dramatically staged static displays of original and replica aircraft, along with flyable planes from the WWI era – see photo right. One of the museum’s highlights is the worlds only surviving Caproni Ca 22. Website: www.omaka.org.nz Following our tour of the WWI “‘Knights of the Sky”’ exhibit, we go to the newly opened WWII exhibition “Dangerous Skies” featuring, amongst others, Avro Anson Mk1, Fw-190, Yak 3 and MkXIV Spitfire (aircraft subject to change as some may be attending the Wairarapa and/or RNZAF Ohakea’s airshow).

Also resident on the airfield is this Bristol Freighter (pictured left), and subject to one or both engines being serviceable, the owners have very kindly agreed to ‘run-up’ them up during our visit, as enjoyed by our previous groups. Our last visit of the day is a few miles down the road at Woodbourne: a true British classic - an Armstrong Whitworth Argosy freighter - the “whistling wheelbarrow” (pictured right).

We check-in and take our seats for a very special ‘flight’ during which refreshments will be served. Website: www.argosy.org.nz/

DAY 9: WEDNESDAY, 22nd FEBRUARY The Marlborough district is the top wine producing area of New Zealand with its wines winning awards around the world, and we start the day with a tour of one of the local, award-winning, vineyards. Arriving back in Picton by 13:00 we board the 14:15 car ferry back to Wellington arriving at 17:45 We then check in for a 2-nights stay on a bed and breakfast basis at the 4 star Novotel, Wellington. It is located in the heart of the city and close to many attractions. The cable car, botanical gardens and the waterfront are all within walking distance. It has an on-site restaurant and bar with other options located in the immediate area. There is a small charge for Wi-Fi. Website: www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-3276-novotel-wellington/index.shtml Wellington is New Zealand's capital city, and clings to the steep hillsides around its magnificent harbour at the southern tip of the North Island. The geographical heart of the country, it is also the political and administrative centre. The city has a cosmopolitan flavour with department stores, boutiques, galleries, trendy cafes and restaurants. Dinner tonight is included in the tour price, in the hotel’s restaurant.

DAY 10: THURSDAY, 23rd FEBRUARY A free day to enjoy as you wish.

DAY 11: FRIDAY, 24th FEBRUARY At 08:30 we depart for RNZAF Ohakea, venue of the 80th Anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 90 miles to the north. We currently await release of further details of what is planned to be a 2 day event on the Saturday and Sunday. Today we will park outside the base on the approach to the runway to get photos of aircraft arriving for the show. In addition to RNZAF aircraft, there will also be aircraft from international armed forces.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) Consular Advice The FCO's consular service is a major operation. Every hour of every day consular staff around the world are advising and helping British nationals. For up-to-date passport, visa and security information, we suggest you visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice In addition, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) provides both a web site http://abta.com/go-travel and an Information Line, telephone: 020 3117 0599. This line is open between the hours 10:00 – 16:00, Monday-Friday (excluding bank holidays).

Passports and Visas Citizens of the UK are required to be in possession of a Full UK – Biometric - Passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your return. You may also refer to the World Travel Guide website: www.wtgonline.com for general information on passports, visas and health requirements. British nationals do not require a visa to enter Dubai, Sharjah or New Zealand for a stay of up to 6-months. You will need a visa to enter Australia. British citizens can get the following types of electronic visitor visa: eVisitor visa: on-line direct from the Australian Department of Immigration & Border Protection. There is no visa application charge or service fee for this. If you do not have access to the internet: Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via your travel agent or airline. There is no visa application charge, but a service fee of £25.00 will be charged if purchased by Ian Allan Travel. Information on all other types of visa is available from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, or from the Australian High Commission in London. Non-British citizens should consult their nearest UAE, New Zealand and Australian Consulate as appropriate.

New Zealand and Australian Customs Both countries have very strict Border Controls and charge an instant fine for bringing in restricted goods. Please ensure that all the necessary items are correctly listed on your declaration form, and dispose of any food and fresh fruit you may be carrying with you in the amnesty bins provided, or declare it.

Coach Travel Ian Allan Aviation Tours only use coaches chartered from reputable companies, with a driver. Where we have had to cancel a tour, due to the small number of bookings, we have looked at the possibility of renting a 16-18 seater minibus, with our tour manager driving. However, without exception, the hiring of such a vehicle is illegal if any of the occupants make any payment towards the rental price, fuel and/or other expenses - known as “for hire or reward”. Any such rental, made without these facts being known to the rental company at the time of booking, also invalidates all insurance covering the vehicle, contents and persons. The DVLA has also confirmed that any “for hire or reward” rental could breach the normal driving classification of a standard UK driver’s license. Therefore, we do not undertake any tours using 9-18 seater minibuses from a rental company; either with our tour manager, or a member of the group, driving.

In addition to the hand baggage allowance above, you may also carry on board personal items such as an overcoat, handbag, walking stick, camera or slim-line laptop. As a safety precaution, all cabin baggage must be able to fit in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Anything in excess of the dimensions and weight allowed as listed below will need to be repacked as part of your checked baggage allowance. Restrictions remain in place for the carriage of liquids, gels, and creams in hand baggage for all passengers departing from and transferring through all EU airports. Some other airports around the world operate their own restrictions. Customers are advised to check before they travel. Limited quantities of liquids (individual containers must not exceed 100ml or 3.5 fl oz), are allowed as hand baggage but must be carried separately through security in a clear plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag that does not exceed 20cm x 20cm (8 inches x 8 inches), or quart size. Items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely closed. The bag can only contain liquids such as shampoo, suntan lotions, creams, toothpaste, hair gel and hair spray, perfumes, cosmetics such as mascara and lip gloss, water and other drinks, soups and syrups and other items of a similar consistency. Cigarette lighters are NOT permitted in hold baggage or through the security search. These may be purchased airside. Prescription medicines in liquid form, e.g. diabetic kit can also be included. All electrical devices, e.g. cameras, laptops, i-pads, mobile phones etc, must be fully charged. If not they, and you, may have to undergo additional security checks which could result in you missing your flight; in which case – depending on the co-operation of the airline - you may have to purchase new tickets (if you do not board your first flight then all other flights are automatically cancelled). At security all remaining items should be placed in the tray provided for screening, e.g. car keys and fobs, cash, solid food, books, newspapers, cigarettes and tobacco, belts and shoes. Pushchairs and walking aids are permitted but must be x-ray screened. All wheelchairs will be subject to search. Please note, you may be subject to a hand search by the security team and required to remove footwear to be x-ray screened. Once in the departure lounge passengers may purchase certain items in any shop and take it onto the aircraft as normal. Passengers may be subject to a secondary search at the departure gate before boarding. Any items not on the approved list will be removed. As baggage regulations can change with little warning, due to security requirements, you are strongly advised to contact the airline for the latest information nearer to the time of your departure.

Baggage Weight Restrictions – UK Airports: Since 1st June 2004, any single piece of checked baggage weighing more than 70lbs (32kgs) has not been accepted at check-in by any airline operating from London’s Heathrow Airport. The BAA, and most other airports world-wide, have also introduced this limit in an attempt to reduce manual handling injuries amongst airport staff. Please bear this in mind when packing.

Travel Insurance For citizens of the United Kingdom, Ian Allan Travel Ltd are able to offer competitive and comprehensive insurance cover. However, if you do not wish to take out our insurance, you must ensure that comparable or greater cover is taken. The number of your Insurance Policy should be written, if known, on your Booking Form at the time of making the reservation, but no later than the date when final payment is due. A copy of the policy must be forwarded to Ian Allan Travel Ltd. Individual insurance policies are arranged through CoverMore Insurance Services Limited; the premiums for which will vary according to your circumstances. Full details are available on request. These policies also include cover for non-scheduled flights, i.e. pleasure flights, where the aircraft is licensed and insured to undertake such flights, and where a payment is made.

Wheelchair Assistance at Airports Anyone requiring wheelchair assistance at airports must have this service requested and confirmed in advance. Airlines and/or airports can no longer provide this service without prior confirmation, therefore, please annotate your booking form accordingly.

Flexible Itinerary We are very happy for enthusiasts to take time away from the printed itinerary to pursue their own interests during multi-day stays in the same place, so long as they inform the Tour Manager. It will be the individual’s responsibility to ensure that they re-join the group in the hotel at the stated time on the day of departure.

Land Only Price For enthusiasts who would prefer to join the tour in New Zealand (instead of flying from the UK with the main group), we will be pleased to provide a ‘Land Only’ price. This price does NOT include flights to or from New Zealand or Australia. You are strongly advised to contact us before making your own flight arrangements in the event that there has been a change to the published itinerary. Please note that the ‘Land only’ price is based on you meeting the tour at the hotel in Masterton and leaving the group at the hotel in Melbourne. If however you wish to join the group on the arrival transfer from Wellington Airport we can offer a seat on the coach for £30.00.

Flight Timings & Connecting Travel Arrangements to Departure Airport All flight departure and arrival times are correct at the time of preparing each itinerary; however, airlines may change these times with little or no prior warning. In practice such changes are only a few minutes either way or the final itinerary will show the actual times. Clients making their own arrangements to get to the departure airport by air, rail, coach etc., should bare the above in mind if purchasing non-refundable or non-changeable tickets. Ian Allan Travel cannot be held responsible for any changes to flight times and any privately arranged travel tickets to the airport becoming invalid.

Pre-departure For connecting flights from UK regional airports - please call Ian Allan Aviation Tours on 01932 255625 for the latest special offers available.
