DESCRIPTION

Platelet rich plasma is essentially blood plasma with a far higher content of platelets than normal. These platelets have a number of uses in the body and have a lifespan of several days while continually being replaced by the body. A lack of platelets can lead to excessive bleeding (known as hemophilia) which impairs the body’s ability to heal wounds, as it cannot clot. Equally, too many platelets in the blood can increase the risk of blood clotting, which can be very dangerous for a number of reasons.

General Use Platelet rich plasma is essentially blood plasma with a far higher content of platelets than normal. The general medical use of this therapy usually relates to its abilities to promote soft tissue and bone regeneration. For these qualities, PRP therapy can help with a number of different ailments ranging from osteoarthritis to nerve damage. Recently, those involved in sports have also seen some potential benefits.

Sports Injuries Using blood given by an athlete, platelet rich plasma can be cultivated and used to help injuries. Injecting the plasma near the affected area in order to promote healing and regeneration can help speed up the healing time for injuries. PRP therapy has already been used in tendonitis to help alleviate long-term affliction and it is already starting to show promising results for athletes. As with much of the knowledge surrounding this therapy there is much more that needs to be done in the way of large-scale and long-term testing in order to more conclusively assess its impact. One of the main benefits attributed to PRP therapy relates to how it is non-intrusive. Whereas before one may have tried to operate on affected areas, PRP therapy uses the individuals own blood and regenerative capabilities to help treat sustained damage.

Doping There are many concerns that this therapy violates anti-doping rules. Again, this relates in large part to the therapy’s implementation still lacking major testing and appraisal. As it is unclear whether treatment can affect the finding of other doping drugs, or whether it can enhance performance in and of itself, PRP therapy remains under scrutiny. Thus far however, treatment has remained off the list of prohibited treatment. This is promising for its development as a way to help alleviate injuries as more money can be invested into investigating its efficacy. Although there is still a lot of testing which needs to be done with regards to PRP therapy, it seems that for the moment it remains a positive development in the way injuries and rehabilitation can be treated, especially among athletes.

As this treatment is non-intrusive and generally seen as non-harmful as it uses the bodies own healing mechanisms, the future looks positive for PRP. To find out more on how this revolutionary therapy could help you, visit The Joint and Spine Institute.
