•At the turn of the 12th century it was the capital of a Ruthenian duchy and after the mid 14th century it belonged to Poland; it was granted civic rights (according to Magdeburg law) at the time, which were confirmed by King Władysław Jagellon in 1389.

•In the Middle Ages, Przemyśl was the capital of a “Land”, an administrtive unit with an area of more than 12 thousand sq. Km.

•  In 1772, following the first partition of Poland, Przemyśl was incorporated into Austria.

•During the First World War the town—fortress was besieged by the Russian army twice.

•From September 1939 to June 1941 the Germa-Soviet state border ran along the town’s section of the San River, which was marked in accordance with the Nazi-Soviet Pact. According to the agreements made during the Yalta and Teheran summit meetings an eastern border was imposed on Poland to run along the Curzon Line, which resulted in the fact that Przemyśl found itself in the border zone and cut off from areas that had been its natural economic base.

In the years 1878 - 1914 Przemyśl was changed into a ring fort fortress of the 1st class; the third in size among 200 similar military objects constucted in Europe. The town was surrounded with a ring of 15 km of embankment and a moat, reinforced with about 30 bastions, forts and gates. All the forts, stores, bridges, cannons and materials that could be used by the enemy were blown up and the fortress was surrended in March 22, 1915. It was taken over again by the joint Austro - Hungarian and German armies on June 3, 1915.

The devastated and neglected forts were recognized as a legally

protected relic of defence architecture in 1968.   They  still

make a unique historical - touristic, as well as landscape,

attraction. A track marked in black runs among the fortifications.

From any location in Przemyśl it is easy to find the way to the Cathedral. Your guide is the Cathedral tower - the highest point in the city skyline. An attractive route to get there leads up the stairs from the west-northern corner of Town Square, across Grodzka Street, and up another flight of massive stairs right to the northern walls of the cathedral chancel. You will have the Bishops' Palace and the great cathedral tower to your right.

The Orthodox Basilica is an interesting site both on account of its location and history. The first occupants of the church were Jesuits who came to Przemyśl in 1610 by invitation of Bishop Sieciński.

During the reign of king Kazimierz the Great a stone Gothic castle replaced the wooden construction. Another reconstruction took place in the Renaissance period. In the 16th century Starosta Piotr Kmita commissioned a system of wooden conduits to provide water to the castle. Back then the castle had 5 stone towers, a wooden gate, a draw bridge spanning the moat and several wooden houses in the courtyard.

In the 18th century, under the governance of Stanisław August Poniatowski - the Starosta of Przemyśl and the future king, one more renovation was commissioned.

The Town Square

In Przemyśl, the Town Square has a lay-out that breaks away from the traditions of those in other Polish towns.

The four sides don't form a closed square. There are no buildings on the side to the west and the side to the south is not complete.

The central feature of the square is a fountain made in brass, with figures of playful baby bears spewing water over inattentive on-lookers.

The Clock Tower

The white clock tower, situated along this route, was built around 1780 in the late Baroque style. It originally served as a belfry of an Orthodox church.
