“Where Scholars Come To Learn!”

Greetings Parents & Guardians ~

We Need YOU!

A question presented recently was

“Why do we have this achievement

gap?” That is something to ponder.

What can we do as a community to

erase the stigma that shadows us?

As much as it the educator ‘s respon-

sibility to instruct it is your responsi-

bility as well, I cannot stress that

enough. Why not attend a meeting

or workshop and seriously have dia-

log about this. You have a voice and

your presence is greatly needed. It

matters that you remain involved in

your child’s success. Make every day

count!

The 2001 No Child Left Behind act ,

renamed Every Student Succeed Act

by former President Obama still

speaks volumes. I need you to be

involved, encouraged, informed,

motivated every day in every way! A

quality education will prepare your

child to become responsible and en-

gaged citizens ready for life in a

changing world.

PS48Q is the place to be with our

dynamic team of professionals. Our

educational complex prepares your

scholar to be college and career

ready. However, you too can edu-

cate yourself through your children.

As they learn, you learn.

If you feel challenged we are here to

help. It will take determination and

a strong will. Be the opposition, be

the change that you desire to be.

FYI .. Did you know that you have an

opportunity to obtain a G.E.D. and

further educate yourself.

In saying so .. parents/guardians, I

have GOOD NEWS!! I just discov-

ered that the DOE (Department of

Education) has free classes .

Why not take advantage of this and

get into the marketplace of employ-

ment or what ever your career

choice may be. And yes there are

day and evening classes … all you

have to do is show up.

I hope that you will take advantage

and attend a class of your choice. If

you attend any of my workshops I

can provide more information.

Looking forward, March is Women’s

History Month.

Women are acknowledged and rec-

ognized across the region. Perhaps

we can acknowledge some of our

great women here at PS48Q. Wom-

en stand strong and tall and em-

brace one another. Show some love

and celebrate our beloved women.

In closing, extend your heart and

embrace your child everyday. Hap-

py Valentine’s Day!

Facts

Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Real Veggie Life

By Abigail Shaw

Edited by Mrs. Scott-Channer

Have you ever been a vegan? Being a vegan is a really healthy life. A vegan is a person who does not eat

eggs, milk, and ice cream. This is a little different from a vegetarian, a vegetarian is someone who can eat

eggs, fish, and other dairy products.

Being a Vegan at PS48Q

The food in my school is part meat and vegan parts. We have a salad bar with salad dressing, corn, pickles

and more. Our school serves dumplings, cabbage rolls, rice, apples, beans, and many more foods. There are

also non vegan things on the menu like beef, cheese, chicken sandwiches, and even turkey at times.

Being a vegan is hard for me at school because sometimes or some days there are no vegan options! For

example, today we were served beef and cheese with rice, sun chips, and milk. I gave away the beef and

cheese, and I ate the rice and beans. It would be nice, if there were vegetarian options set aside, so this way

we wouldn’t have to waste the food we don’t eat.

Suggestions

I think our cafeteria can make it better for vegans by offering vegan meals. Also, kids that don’t drink cow

milk should be allowed to get cold water during afterschool. Finally I would like the cafeteria to reopen the

salad bar. Abigail Shaw

Recognizing the DREAM

So I visited several classes that were working on their Martin Luther King Day presentations and one

that stood out for me was Ms. Price class K-13. These scholars created puppets out of paper bags

with the image of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And shared knowledge of his heroic lifestyle.

There was such a buzz around the room about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that you would

have thought these scholars were actually reliving that era. Each were sharing what they knew of

him and how they would make a difference in the world. I actually heard a group discussion

amongst three scholars on how they were mortified of his death. How it was unfair and a sad day for

all. Here are some of the highlights that occurred in the classroom.

Ms. Price— What was Dr. Martin Luther King’s mission?

ALL—His mission was to make sure there was peace and freedom for all

Ms. Price—Where did he work?

King Carter—He worked first in a church

Ms. Price—What was his wife’s name?

Ms. Price—When was he assassinated?

Jacob Emonds—He was killed on April 4th and when I read about it I was so sad.

Mr. W.—Can you tell me a little about Rev. Dr. Marting Luther King, Jr.

Jacob Emonds— Yes, he wrote the “Dream” speech and he wanted everyone to be nice.

Between the one longer and yet

Intentionally make decisions that will

Blind, forge move and create history

We are not called to be popular,

We are not called to be safe,

We are called to follow,

We are the one called to take risks

We are the ones called to change attitudes
