CommentThe firsts played a strong Christchurch outfit in the local Derby on Saturday. Although a number of the singles games were competitive, Christchurch proved too good in all matches. It was pleasing to see that a number of boys matches were significantly closer in the second set than the first showing that the boys made Christchurch fight for each match. The Christchurch doubles pairings were full of confident and played a much more attacking style of Badminton. Final result Christchurch 9 defeated Scotch 0.

The seconds played traditional rivals Christchurch on Saturday and the fixture was a close affair. Christchurch got off to a good start winning the first four singles matches. Harrison Banfield won at number 5 easily and in his first match in the 2nds Jordan Doull fought extremely hard to win a gutsy 3 set match. This was easily the highlight of the fixture. In the doubles, all three matches were close but only the victors in the singles, Harrison and Jordan could win their match. Final result, Christchurch 6 defeated Scotch 3.

On a perfect morning for running, we were easily defeated by a very strong and improved Christ Church team. With Captain Henry Wiffen unable to compete due to injury, plus the absence of Kyle Newman, we were weakened considerably at the top end.

Christ Church runners filled the first 8 places in a complete domination. Their first placed runner completed the course in under 15 minutes, which is an outstanding run. However, even though we were outrun again this week, the efforts of the majority of the Scotch College runners could not be questioned. Mr Davey, who stood at the finishing line, spoke to the boys at the end of the race and praised them for their efforts, commenting on how they had pushed themselves to the limit, with a number of them being physically sick.

Once again, a big thank you to all the Year 8 and 9 boys who play PSA sport on Friday afternoons, but still commit to running on Saturday mornings. Thanks also to the Badminton players who join the team for the run. The following boys put in fine races: Oliver Green (9th), Connor Enslin (11th), Riley Aitken (12th), Joseph Bloodworth (13th), Arthur Payne (18th), Charles Wandby (19th), Lachlan Bassett (21st), Riley Walker (22nd), Joshua Jones (24th), Ollie Benson (26th), Logan Deitner (29th) and Jamie McCormick (31st).

After a hard fought win against Aquinas in Round 2 Scotch players were left counting their injuries and in need of a light week only 2 weeks into the season proper. The Round 3 clash against Christ Church saw Scotch travel away for the second week in a row to play Christ Church.

The oval still held some dew with the first quarter played in slightly wet conditions. This did not deter Scotch players who were told to hunt in packs and take risks at every opportunity in order to develop their confidence and self-belief even if mistakes are made on field.

The players played to plan, showcasing their ability to extract the ball from a contest and move it quickly around the ground realizing the ball travels quicker when first option by hand or foot be taken.

After quarter time Christ Church were instructed to congest play making the game scrappy, limiting the flow of play forward for Scotch. Not to deter Scotch players they were instructed to relish the experience and learn their capabilities when encountering a tight, stoppage orientated game, whilst working on their forward structure when the game did open up.

Scotch continued with work rate and when opportunities presented moved the ball forward with precision, running out victors. The weeks focus centered around leadership and direction and how you can impact the play through communication and selflessness – a highlight on Saturday. Players are now starting to understand their role within the team and will be pressed in the coming weeks to introduce their flair with ball in hand to complement their confidence.

Scotch started well by controlled the ball in the midfield gaining plenty of possessions. This allowed the forwards to move into space, creating a number of accurate scoring opportunities. The team built on the success of the first term by competing hard at the ball. The pressure of the team was a highlight with some great tackles preventing Christ Church from counter attacking. At half time Scotch led by 40 points. To their credit the boys outplayed Christ Church in the second half. They had more of the play and they forced Christ Church into turning the ball over. Scotch battled hard and ran out 73 point winners.

CommentComing off an outstanding performance last week against Aquinas, I was confident in the boy’s ability to notch up another winning game. They did just that, with scotch 90 defeating Christ Church 6 convincingly. However, the win was somewhat shadowed by a devastating injury to Shepard while unselfishly chasing and tackling a Christ church forward. Due to a lengthy wait for an ambulance, the game was shortened to two quarters. Nonetheless, this had little to no impact on the boy’s endeavour to win the game. Scotch managed to keep Christ Church scoreless post-injury time and continue to score accurately on the board. Best players were difficult to find due to the enormous team effort and contributions by every boy on the ground. The scotch 8c’s are proving to be a team of finesse, discipline and enthusiasm.

9CDue to CCGS not having a 9C’s football team, Scotch travelled to Aquinas to participate in a scratch-match with Hale and Aquinas. Due to small numbers boys from each school were split and into 2 teams who had a game. With 20 a side there was a lot of congestion however the Scotch boys showed their class whenever the ball went near them.

Scotch started the game and had plenty of the play in the first term. Some good work resulted in Nick Crump and Will Riekie gaining plenty of possessions and Scotch had numerous scoring opportunites. Daniel Manetas once again played well at centre half forward, providing a strong marking target and he was well supported by Kade Lines, Reece Eades and Scott Smith at ground level. CCGS played well in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and the game was in the balance going into the final term. Scotch responded very well and played a pleasing last 15 minutes. A great goal to Crump got the quarter started and continual hard work by the entire Scotch team saw them run out 21 points winners. Fo

This was always going to be a tough game and so it proved. CCGS were very ca-pable and it was a tense first half with few chances in it. Early in the second half Scotch had two one-on-ones with their GK but he made two good saves in quick succession. They scored from one of their two corners and we failed to score from any of our 6 - very costly! The game could have gone either way but this failure to make the most of ones chances cost us points. Whitewood again played well and Munckton created opportunities driving down the left but CCGS looked sharper than us at the start and we need to address our first half performance.

CommentAfter a subdued warm up Scotch started the game slowly and it looked for a moment as if this was going to be a repeat of the disappointing loss to Aquinas last week, conceding the first goal of the match through slack defending. However, Scotch rallied and senior players in the team stepped up to the challenge.Cain equalized with a clinical strike from the top off a short-corner. Scotch went 2-1 up early in the second half. Lewin’s persistence in the D payed off, bundling the ball over the goal line. Credit to a very skillful Christchurch side for getting themselves back in the game with a well taken breakaway goal. Cain added the winner with 5 minutes remaining and Scotch held out.

Scotch took some time to assert its superiority over the opposition but eventu-ally excellent team skills accelerated the scoring. The mercy rule was invoked at 10 goals. Captain Alastair Murray led by example and Oliver Harding and Oliver Benson dominated in the midfield. Scotch used the wings effectively and Andrew Burvill’s and Nick Klug’s pace posed a continual threat. Digby Pink was strong and effective at right half and Josh Pearson was safe in defence and later dangerous in attack.

Comment

This week was another round robin fixture for the 9C’s, who came up against a strong Hale opposition. Games were played across the width of the field, and went for 8 minutes, allowing the team to fully exert themselves for a short period of time before having a well deserved rest. Playing against teams comprising of boys from the Hale 9B and 8B teams, Scotch put in a huge effort to come out victorious in a scrappy, but well deserved 2-1 win against the 8B’s, but went down in a tight 1-0 loss to the 9B’s. Tom Miller and Tom Turner set up numerous plays that resulted in goals throughout all the matches, and provided some good carry when moving forward from defence.

Hoc

Daniel BuchhornA great result against Christ Church. Scotch maintained the majority of possession and our defensive players were not put under pressure too often. Our midfield and forwards were doing a lot of running and really testing out Christ Church’s defence. It was a terrific display of team work with a number players showing great leadership and coaching their less-experienced team mates to victory.

Scotch again faced stiff competition losing 4 – 0 to a skilful ChristChurch side. Scotch spent most of the first half in defence, findingit difficult to move the ball into the forward line. Christ Churchcapitalised on early short corner opportunities to take the game to 2– 0 by half time. In the second half Scotch moved the ball muchbetter, starting to string passes together which created opportunitiesin front of goal. The best opportunity occurred in a breakaway wherePaul Chapman found Darcy Frazer in the circle and unfortunately theChrist Church goalkeeper was able to clear Darcy’s shot on goal.Scotch’s ability to create these opportunities stemmed from theincreased pressure applied, causing the opposition to make mistakes. While Christ Church still managed to put two more goals pass Scotch inthe second half, the game was played more on Scotch’s terms. Whilethere were improvements from the previous game we will need to work onpossessing the ball and our reactions to turnovers.

yThe combined 10C/3rds Scotch team notched up another win, this time against a depleted, but skilful side from CCGS. Christchurch lacked the numbers to field a full side, reducing the game to a 9 vs 9, allowing the players to find and use the space in the field more effectively. Despite gaining the upper hand early on in the first half, Scotch conceded a few goals and allowed CCGS to gain some momentum after the break. However, lead by Sachin Thorpe and Jesse Witts, Scotch scored repeatedly to win with a final score of 4-3.

A beautiful day was witnessed at Allen Park for the 8A rugby derby against Christ Church Grammar. Scotch arrived looking rather lethargic with several boys feeling under the weather since returning from camp. Not even Connor O’Sullivan’s pre match talk seemed enough to fire up the boys. However, from the start Scotch showed why they are unbeaten so far this

season and continuing an excellent run of victories. A number of players stood out for the team – In the backs Lachie Phillips looked as dangerous as ever and Cooper Lindsay managed the line well. Kieran Shine made constant drives over the advantage line and his partner, Ben Skelton looked like a Wallaby in the making with his fierce tackle breaking and searing pace. Both wingers Oscar Lane and Ryan Bradbury had their moments out wide. In the forwards Fletcher Houston was outstanding and tackled himself into the ground. Will “Red Bull” Harkins played like a man possessed when unleashed just before half time and is a worthy contender for man of the match. Sean Szalek’s offloads and direct running constantly wore down the opposition defence. Tom Anderson made excellent contributions in the scrum and line-out.The boys still have some work to do in defence and in the coming weeks we hope to finish games without points being conceded at the end. All deserve a big pat on the back for this win. It really is great to see the boys enjoying their rugby. Final score: Scotch 54 Christ Church 5.

The scrum was dominant but a plethora of decisions going against the team prevented Scotch from gaining and real momentum. Scotch dominated early but gave up the chance to kick early points. Shortly before half time Scotch had a line out drive in the Christchurch 22 and James Fox- Slater burst out of the ensuing maul to score Scotch’s first try, which Rob Steadman converted. Then Christchurch scored themselves after some slack defence near the base of the ruck. Christchurch converted and the scores were locked at 7-7 at halftime. Early in the second half Christchurch scored their second try before Fergus Walsh scored for Scotch after the ball was moved to space. Scotch dominated most of the rest of the half but two disallowed tries and a dropped ball over the line proved costly in the end. A late penalty goal ensured that Christchurch finished 12-17 winners.Captain for the day Julian Sanders led by example and Vincent Carter was good at scrum time and carried the ball with purpose. James Fox-Slater was good in the loose while Liam Warner added some real zing in the second half. Jordan McEwen pulled off and excellent tackle on defence and was very unlucky to have a try disallowed.Scotch 2nds have real potential to do well this season but there were too many individuals running one out without support rather than creating space by drawing and passing.

The Scotch Year 10 A’s had a close call against Christchurch on Saturday, running out 12 -10 victors against a game Christchurch XV. Christchurch are a little shy on numbers this year in Year 10 and the large Scotch squad has resulted in some of the Scotch boys helping them out so far this year. An area of strength of the Scotch team is to put into practice what they have worked on in the week and this weekend was no different. The Scotch forwards had worked on hitting it up around the ruck midweek and they started strongly Matthew Ormerod and Harry Jones making good go forward with close hitting up of the ball around the ruck. James Warne made a welcome return from illness and Alex Elliot-Taylor was influential all day. After many a pick and drive from Scotch Abraham Potter, who was captain on the day, dove over for Scotch to lead 7 -0. Christchurch, although low on numbers, were a very useful team and their forwards responded with some strong play of their own. The wet dewy conditions didn’t lead to open expansive rugby and there were errors across both teams as they struggled to come to terms with the conditions. Christchurch made a good fist of it though and scored a try of their own which went unconverted. Scotch led 7 – 5 at half time.

Scotch started the second half strongly and Darcy McDougal who was dangerous all day scored a great individual try with his strong direct running. The Christchurch loose trio were beginning to exert pressure of their own and were dominating the loose as Christchurch found their footing and were now on top in most areas. Matthew Khowira, a Scotch boy, was having a blinder for the Church boys and it looked like Scotch’s willingness to help out might cost them dearly. The Christchurch pressure eventually told, as their centre chipped and gathered and scored under the posts. Thankfully for Scotch the conversion was missed from right in front. With 7 minutes to go Christchurch returned once again into the contest. Isaac Bombara who had been substituted in the first half had come back on by this stage and he was destructive in his defense around the ruck in the last 15 minutes. He made hit after hit as Christchurch pressed for the winner. They would surely have scored if it weren’t for his huge defensive effort and for this he was rewarded with a man of the match performance.

The sign of a good team is to manage to find a way to win when not at your best and this the Scotch team did on Saturday. They will need to keep these off days to a minimum though if they are to be competitive going into the rest of the season.

Rug

byScotch registered their first loss of the season in an intensely fought local derby away at Christchurch. Defence dominated proceedings and with Church having the lions share of possession and an incredibly one-sided penalty count in their favour, it was credit to the Scotch defense that they conceded only twice in 70 minutes.

Scotch did manage to cross the whitewash in the second half only for the try to be disallowed for ‘not releasing the ball!!’ It was however, one of only a few forays into the opposition half and Scotch will need to work hard this week on their attack if they are to improve their fortunes against Guildford next week.

Guildford Year 9s defeated Scotch 8bs 55-0. As stated by one of the players scotch was intimidated due to the size and aggression brought by the older opposition. Put under pressure scotch failed to stay composed in setting their defensive line along with making low tackles. However, feedback provided in the second half was taken on board and the boys attacked effectively for a few phases, making it almost over the try line.

Scotch 10Bs along with Christ Church lost to the Scotch 10 As 12-10. Due to the lack of numbers, injuries and a request by the rival school, a mixed team was formed for the weekends clash. The scotch boys played with exceptional enthusiasm and were commended for their efforts by spectators. Patrick Carter made some wonderful tackles, whilst Mathew Khowira throughly contributed when both attacking and defending. It was a fairly even and exciting match with a brilliant display of skills from both sides.

Scotch 10C’s took on Christ Church 10C’s, looking for our first win of the season. After narrowly losing our first two games the boys were des-perate for a win. Scotch dominated the first half but unfortunately went 1-0 down 15 minutes in, even though we missed several clear chances. To the boys credit though they fought back magnificently and levelled the score just before half time through Antonio. The second half was much more straight forward. Hugo scored a superb left footed effort effort to make it 2-1, before we then scored a penalty through Connor and a goal with the last kick of the game to rap it up, with the end score being 4-1.

Conrad Forrest played an outstanding game for the 7C soccer against Christ Church. His intension to be involved in the play and contribute to the result was well noted. Lachlan Duddy also caught my attention when he went beyond “second efforts” and actually made four attempts to break up the play and defensively take control of the ball.

I have to say I am enjoying coaching the 7C’s. A group of boys who initially were content with minimal effort and poor attitude have come to realize they can be competitive. Their successes are encouraging and their self-belief is a pleasure to witness.

CommentA tough game from the outset, Scotch began strongly, dominating the midfield battle and piling pressure on the Christ Church back four. Scotch received several opportunities in the first half to score, but the Christ church keeper made a string of great saves to keep them in the game. It was Christ church who scored against the run of play before halftime, their striker beating our flat back 4 with pace and slotting home from close range. After half time scotch continued to work, but missed shots were proving costly and Christ church began to grow in confidence. Jordan Chatt was tripped in the box to earn a penalty, which Oscar Yungsted calmly slotted down the middle to tie the score.

The 7B’s had a tough afternoon in their match against Christ Church. After leading 2 - 1 midway through the first half, Scotch were over run in the second half and went down by 6 goals to 2.

Christ Church got off to a great start with an early goal. The Scotch boys quickly got over the shock of that goal and started to apply pressure in the middle of the pitch. Stefan Safar and James Taylor started to gain control of the midfield. As a result of a controlled pass from midfield, Harry scored with a beautifully placed low shot. The Scotch boys took control of the game and just before half time Tom scored with a fantastic long range shot making the half time score 2 - 1 for Scotch. In the second half the Scotch boys were in total control of the game. There were some solid defending from Lewis, Zack and Callum. The short quick passes between midfielders and forwards were working beautifully. Forwards Harry and Tom were getting plenty of the ball and the Christ Church defenders were under a lot of pressure. Harry scored 4 more goals to bring his total in the game to 5 and just before the final whistle Christ Church scored a goal.

The final score; Scotch 6 Christ Church 2. The commitment shown by the Scotch boys in this game was commendable. They keep improving with each game.

The game started off competitively between the two rival schools. Scotch pushed hard offensively to try and break the Christchurch defence but were continuously stopped. After 15 minutes, Scotch finally broke through and managed to score through a turn and through ball by James and a fine bottom corner finish by Giac. Scotch then came out strong to make it 2-0. Before the end of the half however the tables turned as Christchurch began to fight back. Little could be done as the Christchurch player ran through and put it through the keeper’s legs. Another goal was scored minutes later which was blasted past the scotch goalkeeper. Scotch finished off the first half strong with a goal, the assist going to Mac from his superb corner. In the second half, Christchurch came out with a purpose to win as Scotch’s strong defence consisting of Austin, Connor, Matt and Ben did a great job of keeping Christchurch out. Little could be done however as they managed to score 2 goals to make it 4-3. In the dying minutes of the game Dave scored a quick goal to make it 4-4. Overall a fantastic performance in our hardest match yet.

After an impressive start to the 2014 Season, Scotch looked forward to its next big challenge; a confident Christchurch. As the season has progressed the Scotch 9A’s have continued to familiarise themselves with a common game plan and team expectations. In this 3rd game of the season, they exercised a collective effort that saw them overrun and out-maneuver their opponents to the point where they where able to dictate the course of the play in the latter stages of the game. It was also good to see each player confident in taking risks, illustrating a growing awareness on their team mates. It was a very satisfying team performance where all of the squad worked as one. A great result.

The ever improving Scotch year 8A side produced their best football of the season so far to record a convincing 8-3 win over rivals CCGS. Nick, Freddie, Caleb, Calum, Carson (2) & Josh Fisher (2) all scored but I think special mention must go to Chris Vann who was outstanding in goal in his 1st game for the A-side. His talking & quick distribution of the ball gave the defence real confidence. Scotch led 4-1 at half-time, but CCGS never gave up & within 5 minutes of the restart they’d reduced the arrears to 4-3. The Scotch boys regained focus & when we were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal, Calum Russell confidently smashed his shot into the top corner to dishearten our opponents. More quality passing seen gaps open up in the CCGS defence & Scotch opened the lead back out to 5 goals, finishing deserved 8-3 winners. A great performance, well done to all 14 of the boys!

The Scotch boys lost a close contest 1-0. On reflection, the difference between the sides was two similar goal scoring opportunities. Louis Pappalia was unlucky to see his chip over the stranded CCGS keeper rebound off the crossbar, but 10 minutes later, the CCGS when presented with the same circumstances, lobbed Jonty Gray to score the only goal of the game. The 2nd half was a scrappy affair, with CCGS finishing on top in a physical affair.
