Step 1 First, you'll need 2 stock images for this tutorial, one of the Car , and the other is of Fireworks . Start off by duplicating your background layer. Now desaturate this image to get rid of the annoying hue by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+U. Next, we'll add our own color modifications, which are more subtle, and cover the entire vehicle. Add a new adjustment color balance layer and fill in the values as shown in the screenshot. Next we place everything in a layer set called 'edit'. The layer set is so that you can turn off all the visibility on all the work you did. This will allow you to see the difference between the original image and how far you are in the design. http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/super-fast-speed-lighting-effect/

Step 1

First, you'll need 2 stock images for this tutorial, one of the Car, and the other is of Fireworks.

Next we place everything in a layer set called'edit'. The layer set is so that you can turn off all the visibility on all the work you did. This will allow you to see the difference between the original image and how far you are in the design.

Step 2

Using the dodge and burn tools with soft round brushes around 150-200px in size, with the dodge tool set to highlights, the exposure at 45-50%, the burn tool set to highlights, and with the exposure set to about 85-90%, start dodging and burning certain parts of the image. For instance, you may want to dodge the front wheel arch, the lights, Mercedes logo, grill and the mirror. You may want to burn the rear end, the bottom, the back door a tad, and the windows until they turn completely black.

You should decide what you find adequate. If you are using a mouse like me, simply tap, instead of constantly pressing, this way you have a lot more control. We are doing this to add contrast. The After image below shows the windows blackened, and other areas as well.

Page 3: psd and abduzeedo

Step 3

Now open up the Fireworks image. Go to image > rotate canvas > 90°CW. Next go to filter > blur > motion blur. Set the angle to 0° and the distance to 750px. Hit OK. Then cut and paste this picture onto our car. We won't be using this entire image, the areas of interest have been marked in the image below. The area with the big red X over it is pretty much useless.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/super-fast-speed-lighting-effect/

Page 4: psd and abduzeedo

Step 4

Paste this light layer above the background copy layer and below the color adjustment layer. Set its blending mode to screen. This gets rid of the black background without hurting the other light values. Now rotate and position the spot marked with thegreen arrow in the previous screenshot above the right headlight, as shown below in the screenshot. You can stretch the image if you want, it's blurred already so blurring it more won't hurt.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/super-fast-speed-lighting-effect/

Page 5: psd and abduzeedo

Step 5

Duplicate the light layer and move the spot that was marked green in the previous screenshot to the left headlight. HitCNTRL+T and size it down just a bit. Now add a layer mask to this layer. Then with a soft black brush get rid of most of thesurrounding light. Below is the image of the mask.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/super-fast-speed-lighting-effect/

Page 6: psd and abduzeedo

Step 6

Go back to your light layer. Select the clone stamp tool (S). Set it to linear dodge (add) in the settings at the top of the window. Then get a decent sized brush, about 500-600px. With the settings below, start cloning different parts of the existing light onto the windows and the roof. Cloning is an easy task, you ALT + CLICK to set a source. This is where the material will be cloned from. Then simply click on another spot on the canvas to clone a piece there. One word of caution, make sure that 'sample:' is set to current layer!!

Step 7

Add a new layer below the 'light' layer. Call it 'flare'. Fill this layer with black and set it to screen. Next go to Filter > Render > Lens Flare. The 105mm prime at 110% brightness looks good, but perhaps you like something else. Put the flare a bit off center, hit OK. Then position the flare over the left headlight. You might notice a white box appear when you move around the flare, that's because the flare stretches beyond our canvas. Use a layer mask to get rid of this box.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/super-fast-speed-lighting-effect/

Page 7: psd and abduzeedo

Now make sure the 'flare' layer is selected (and not the mask), hit CNTRL+U, or go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. Then in the dialog box, tick colorize. Then enter 60 for saturation. Hit OK, duplicate this layer, make it a bit smaller, and place it over the other headlight.

Tip: if you don't want to repeat the flare process again, but you do want a brighter flare, then you can duplicate the layer without moving it.

Step 8

I don't like monotone images. This image is far too red. Let's add a splotch of color. Create a new color balance adjustment layer just above our first one. Then fill in the following values in the images below. This will give you more tones.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/super-fast-speed-lighting-effect/

Page 8: psd and abduzeedo

Step 9

Duplicate the 'background copy' layer and go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Then set the angle to about 35° and the distanceto 25px. This gives us a very blurred image. With a layer mask, mask out areas of focus such as: the headlights, the grill with the Mercedes logo, and the windows. Also, mask out the black background, this will focus the blur more. If the background were not black, but rather there was scenery there, then it would make far more sense to leave it blurred. Since it's black, by masking it we will obtain a soft edge around the blur (since we are masking with a soft brush). Name this layer 'motion blur'.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/super-fast-speed-lighting-effect/

Page 9: psd and abduzeedo

Step 10

This next step is to get a bit of detail back. Duplicate the 'background copy' layer. Move it above the 'motion blur' layer. Now hit CNTRL+L ,or go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. This will bring up the levels dialogue. Then take the white slider, located at the right, and move it towards the middle. Next add a layer mask, and mask out most of this layer, except for the front of the car. I called this layer 'grill detail'.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/super-fast-speed-lighting-effect/

Page 10: psd and abduzeedo

Step 11

Let's light up the window a bit. The next step is to create a layer above all other layers and call this 'window light'. Take a low opacity (15-20%) white fuzzy brush, which is just big enough to cover a decent part of the window, and slightly tap a few times on the glass. This should add brightness to the light there. Last but not least, create another layer on top of all the other layers. Fill it with black. Then go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Set the amount to 10%, Uniform distribution, and tick Monochromatic.Set the layer to screen, and drop the opacity to around 40%. We're done.

Conclusion

Starting with the natural lighting of a Fireworks Display image, we created a motion effect. You can apply this to many different objects, think sunglasses, and other reflective surfaces. It works great as a tool to enrich a scene, like a club scene where you might want some extra lights, or a whole design element for a poster. It's a strong effect you can add to your Photoshop skill set.

Assets

This effect basically relies on lots of good photos. Unfortunately that means this tutorial is more as a general guide than for you to explicitly follow step by step - unless of course you feel like going and buying all the stock photos you'll need to do so. You can get them all from iStockPhoto though I don't have the exact URLs as I bought them so long ago and my account there has literally thousands of files downloaded :-) In any case here is a mini image of them all!

The Finished Product

First of all, here is the finished product. After I produced this mockup in Photoshop I then recreated the site in Flash with animations and buttons and so on - you can see the Flash Showroom site here.

You can also click the image below to see the full view.

Page 14: psd and abduzeedo

Step 1

Now the final image is 1024x768, the first thing I did was place the main background image. Unfortunately for me it's the wrong dimensions (as you can see below). I could enlarge it and crop but then I'd lose some of the nice detail that I wish to use later, so instead I chose to extend the photo.

Step 2

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 15: psd and abduzeedo

Fortunately the job isn't too hard because the top area of the photo is fairly straight forward. The trick is to use gradients of colours picked out of the current background to extend the photo.

I first used the pen tool to draw a shape (shown) that I wanted to fill over with my gradient. Notice that the shape covers some of the area of the actual photo. This is so that afterwards I can use a soft eraser to erase the edges and have it fade gracefully in. I then picked a dark shade from the right hand side and a light shade from the left and drew a linear gradient across in a new layer above the photo. This was followed by some gentle erasing along the bottom to blend.

Step 3

Once again I repeat the same step but on the left side with the light grey area. Again the shape I draw over the photo is larger than necessary so I can erase back for a smooth blend.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 16: psd and abduzeedo

Step 4

Finally the shadow on the right looked a bit uneven, so I added a third layer on top and using the pen tool traced out a shape around the sofa and gave it a dark to light gradient to have a more consistent shading, thus doing away with any last traces of where I blended the images.

Step 5

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 17: psd and abduzeedo

Now the background is ready we can start placing objects. Before we do that I should say a few words about the type of images you want to choose:

1. You need photos that taken at the same angle as the background image you are comping them into. In this case it's a front on view. Note that this is by far the easiest angle to do this effect on.

2. It's also best if you get photos of objects that are isolated as it makes cutting them out way easier 3. Finally avoid photos where any part of the object is out of focus. For example a shot with some perspective may have an edge

of the television a little blurry, if that's the case cutting the object out is much harder, if not impossible.

Anyhow so for each object you simply use the pen tool, trace around the object and then right click on the canvas, select Make Selection from the menu that appears and then copy the object out of it's background and paste it on your main canvas. There are other ways of extracting objects, you could use the Magic Wand tool for example when the object is on flat white, however I findit's much cleaner and not that much harder to do it with the pen tool. If you do use the wand tool, make sure to use a larger photo and then scale down to hide any crappy pixelation effects.

You could also use the Filter > Extract tool, however that's not much easier and the result isn't always as good.

Step 6

Anyhow so here I've placed the TV on to my backdrop. Because there is shadow to the right hand side of the room and it's lighter on the left, I've also gone over the TV with the Burn tool to make it match a little more. Light and shadow are pretty important in making objects match their environment, in this particular tutorial we won't be doing much of that, but we will in the third part of this series.

In any case, the TV is already looking good, but really it should be casting a shadow on the wall beneath and to the right. Currently it looks like it's just floating in space, so let's fix that next.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 18: psd and abduzeedo

Step 7

There are lots of ways of creating shadows, in this instance I just created a layer beneath the TV and then with a soft brush and black selected I painted down and to the right. (by the way I'm not sure why I left those tools and history palettes in the screenshot, that's some lazy tutorial making right there :-)

So as you can see the shadow is what you'd expect if light was coming from the top and left which is sorta what matches the background image we're pasting into.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 19: psd and abduzeedo

Step 8

After that I placed an image onto the television. I placed it in a new layer and then gave it an Inner Shadow layer style with a distance of 0. This is so that there is a bit of shadow along the edges and the image looks like it's inset. This is a bit of a quick and dirty effect, really if you wanted to do the TV just right I'd suggest actually switching your television and then observing what happens at the edges and what sorts of highlights the glass/screen has from the light. But in this instance the TV is small and when I take it to Flash I'm placing videos here so it's not so important.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 20: psd and abduzeedo

Step 9

Next we want to place the laptop. As with the TV I cut out the laptop and mouse from their respective images. I shrank them down using the transform tool (CTRL-T) and placed them appropriately. I then drew a mouse cord (see next step).

Step 10

To make the laptop look like it's really there I drew a mousecord that drapes over the cushion thing and down on to the floor. This helps make the objects look like they are really interacting with their background and not just floating about.

I did this by grabbing my pen tool and imagining where the mouse cord would go if it really was there. It looked like it would go along the cushion, drop down and then along the floor (not really rocket science, but I thought I'd spell it out anyway!) Then once I'd drawn the path, I right clicked and selected Stroke Path and used a 2px hard brush with a light grey colour.

Once the cord was drawn in I used the Burn Tool to brush a bit of shadow onto the cord to make it look more realistic (since in reality everything has bits of light and shadow and no object is really just a flat colour).

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 21: psd and abduzeedo

Step 11

Next we have to add a shadow beneath the laptop and mouse. The mouse's shadow is pretty straight forward - it's just a bit of blurry darkness set to Multiply over the carpet. For the laptop you want the shadow to go down the edge of the cushion.

In the screenshot below I've lifted the laptop up so you can see the shadow I've drawn in properly. Once again I just made it using asoft brush and a dark colour, then set the layer to Multiply so it blends better with the photo beneath. Because the cushion has an edge where the shadow goes over the edge (on the right-most part) I've made the shadow change angle ever so slightly and go down the cushion.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 22: psd and abduzeedo

Step 12

With the speakers on the right hand side, I've basically done the same sort of thing as with the laptop - i.e. create a layer below the photo, draw in a dark colour the shape underneath the object and set it to Multiply.

Figuring out what kind of a shadow an object is going to make is just a matter of observing objects in real life and looking at how they cast shadows with different lights. For this type of image the shadow doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be pretty good. Really if you look closely you will start to see that sometimes the highlights and shadows don't quite make sense (eg notice with the speakers in the screenshot below the right speaker's left side is dark and vice versa for the left speaker when in fact if the light is onthe left, this is the opposite of what should be happening). But for an image like this where you only want to approximate realism, the effect does the trick and fools the eye.

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 23: psd and abduzeedo

Step 13

For the clock in the top left, I actually just drew one up using photoshop - notice it's just a bunch of rectangles within each other using gradients and a bit of a highlight in the top left. I won't talk about this step too much as this tutorial is about comping stuff together not drawing fake clocks :-) Suffice to say I couldn't find the right clock and this did the trick.

Final

http://psdtuts.com/photo-effects-tutorials/how-to-photo-comp-up-a-killer-room-full-of-objects/

Page 24: psd and abduzeedo

Finally I placed lots of text here and there and buttons and what have you and the look is complete.

As I said at the beginning there isn't that much difficulty in an effect like this from the standpoint of pure Photoshop technical ability. It's more about developing your eye to recognize how things should fit together, choosing a good set of photos to comp together and adding shadows and highlights to bring it all together.

The final effect with the right photos can be really nice and is particularly good for use in Flash where you can make objects fly in or materialize.

You can see the Flash Showroom site here or you can also click the image below to see the full view.

In the next part of this series we'll go through another room in a similar fashion to this, there's probably not that much more to add, but it's still interesting seeing the process again. In the final part I'll put together a whole other room from scratch and try to screenshot all the small details of the process. So, until next time folks!

Go to Layer>Layer Style>Color Overlay. Use Soft Light for the Blend Mode. Apply a Brown color (#8b5c01).

Step 3

Next, we'll create a brush that will be used to make the shapes. Select the Rectangle Tool(U) and create a Black Rectangle. Then go to Edit>Transform Path>Skew. After that go to Layer>Rasterize. Use the image below for reference.

Step 5

Create a new layer and go to Layer>Layer Style. Lets apply some styles to the layer. We will use Gradient Overlay, DropShadow, and Inner Shadow. After that, with the Brush Tool(B) click a couple of times to create some shapes.

Page 31: psd and abduzeedo

Step 6

Click with the right button of the mouse over the layer on the Layer Palette. Choose Copy Layer Style. Then create a new layer. Click again with the right button of the mouse over the new layer. Now select Paste Layer Style. After that, with theBrush Tool, click a couple more times to create additional shapes.

Step 7

Repeat Step 6 again, 2 more times.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/mix-cool-retro-curves-into-your-photographs/

Page 32: psd and abduzeedo

Step 8

Select all layers we used to create the geometric shapes and go to Layer>Merge Layers. Then go to Edit>Transform>Rotate. After that resize the layer, as shown below.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/mix-cool-retro-curves-into-your-photographs/

Page 33: psd and abduzeedo

Step 9

Now go to Edit>Transform>Warp. Start moving the mesh in order to create a wave form. The idea is to make the lines pass in front and behind the legs. This adds to the dimensionality of the effect.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/mix-cool-retro-curves-into-your-photographs/

Page 34: psd and abduzeedo

Step 10

With the Polygonal Lasso Tool(L) create a marquee selection of the leg you want to stay in front of the shapes. Then select theshapes layer, and go to Layer>Layer Mask>Hide Selection.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/mix-cool-retro-curves-into-your-photographs/

Page 35: psd and abduzeedo

Step 11

Create a new layer above the shapes layer, click with the right button of the mouse. Then select Create a Clipping Mask. After that select the Brush Tool (B), and a basic brush with 0% hardness. We will create a highlight on the shapes layer. Click once where you want to start the line. Then while holding SHIFT, click where you want to finish the line; This will create a straight line with the Brush Tool. The Blend mode will be Normal with 60% opacity.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/mix-cool-retro-curves-into-your-photographs/

Page 36: psd and abduzeedo

Step 12

Repeat the Step 11; however, this time use black, and from another position. Change the opacity to 40%.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/mix-cool-retro-curves-into-your-photographs/

Page 37: psd and abduzeedo

Step 13

Create a new layer in front of all layers. Fill it with white. Then go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise. Use 4% for the amount. After that, change the Blend Mode of the layer to Multiply.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/mix-cool-retro-curves-into-your-photographs/

Page 38: psd and abduzeedo

Step 14

Place another image in front of the other layers, but behind the Noise layer. You can find the image I used at http://www.sxc.hu/photo/982364. Then resize the image, and change the Blend Mode to Multiply.

Page 39: psd and abduzeedo

Conclusion

One of the best features in Photoshop is the Brush Engine. We can create lots of effects using it. In this tutorial we used it to create rectangular shapes, similar to those seen in James White's work. You can even use rounded corners, or different shapes. Play with the effect and have fun.

NoPattern “Jumper” Effect

In Effects by Fabio

One of the coolest digital artists around is Chuck Anderson, a.k.a. NoPattern. After seeing a recent PSDTUTS reader request, I decided to show you how to create a light effect similar to NoPattern's Jumper Poster. At the end I'll show you how a technique like this can be used in a variety of different ways to make stunning images...

Step 1

Create a new document sized to 600px x 800px. Unlock the background layer and fill it with a dark blue color (#091417).

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 42: psd and abduzeedo

Step 2

Create a new layer, fill it with black and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. Then go to Filter > Render > Fibers. Use 16 for Variance and 4 for Strength.

After that duplicate that layer and move it to the left, so you will have two layers one next to the other. Select both layers, make sure that the layers are aligned from the top, and go to Layer > Merge Layers.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 43: psd and abduzeedo

Step 3

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, use 10 pixels for the Radius. After that go to Filter > Artistic > Plastic. For the Highlight Strength use 5, and for the Detail and Smoothness use 15.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 44: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 45: psd and abduzeedo

Step 4

Now rotate the layer, like 45º and go to Edit > Transform > Warp. Use the image below for reference.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 46: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 47: psd and abduzeedo

Step 5

Now lets add more blur, go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur. Use 72 for the Amount, the Blur Method will be Zoom and the Best Quality.

Step 6

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast. Place the adjustment layer above the light’s layer. You can use 80% for Brightness and 100% for Contrast.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 48: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 49: psd and abduzeedo

Step 7

Select the Color Dodge Tool (O). Pick a large brush, 175px Master Diameter and Hardness 0%. Choose Highlights for the Range, and use 10% for exposure.

Now just start painting over some areas to highlight them, mainly the brighter area, because the idea here is to intensify the rays of light.

You can select the Burn Tool (O) to burn some areas too, that means, if you want to make some areas darker use this tool, it’s exactly the opposite of the Color Dodge Tool.

Step 8

Now select the Polygonal Lasso Tool(L) and create a selection like the image below. Then select the Burn Tool and, as the brush is really big, it’s not necessary to paint direct over the selection, so paint a bit far from the edges just to create a little shadow in the area. Tip: Click once and holding shift click again where you want to be the end, then it will create a line for you.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 50: psd and abduzeedo

Step 9

Repeat the Step 7 and 8 a couple of times, until you think it’s ok, but change the Color Doge Tool Exposure, when you don’t want to much light use 5% for example.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 51: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 52: psd and abduzeedo

Step 10

Now lets create a folder, place it above all other layers and call it “lights”. Change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. Then create a new layer inside the lights folder.

With the Brush Tool (B), select white and a Brush with 30px and 0% Hardness. Create a line like the image below. After that go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Use -29 for the angle and Distance of 107%.

Duplicate the layer, resize it and place it above the other ray. One of the lights is a bit strong, so select the Burn Tool (O) and with a few clicks you can make it a little weaker.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 53: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 54: psd and abduzeedo

Step 11

Now select the Color Dodge Tool (O) again. But this time use a small brush, 10px and let's use 30% for exposure. We will create that shining effect on the edge of some rays of light.

To do that, just create lines on the edges of the rays, repeat the click and holding SHIFT key process to create straight lines using brushes.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 55: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 56: psd and abduzeedo

Step 12

Here you can create more rays of light, just repeating Steps 8, 10 and 11. You don’t need to create new folders though, just create new layers inside the “Lights” folder.

Step 13

Create a new layer, above all of them. Fill it with black, and go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Use for the Amount 10%, for the Distribution use Gaussian and select Monochromatic.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 57: psd and abduzeedo

Step 14

Create a new layer inside the Lights layer. Select the Brush Tool (B) and go to View > Brushes to change some of the brush settings. After that just just paint some sparks over the image.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 58: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 59: psd and abduzeedo

Step 15

Here we will place a photo in our design. Get a photo and delete all the background, we need just the person. The photo I used can be found at www.sxc.hu.

Step 16

Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. For my image I used 12 for Hue, -68 for Saturation, and -5 for Lightness. But these values depend on the image you will use.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 60: psd and abduzeedo

Step 17

Now go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Increase the Contrast to 38 and add a bit of Brightness.

Step 18

Here we will add a bit of blue and green to the image. Go to Image > Adjustments > Curves and follow the image below.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 61: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 62: psd and abduzeedo

Step 19

Create a marquee selection of the person by holding the CTRL and clicking on the layer’s thumbnail. Then create a new layer inside the lights folder.

Now select the Brush Tool (B), use a big brush, 125px diameter and Hardness 0%. Use 50% for the opacity. After that, start painting some parts of the person to highlight them.

Step 20

Place the person’s layer beneath the lights layer and change the layer’s opacity to 80%. After that you can add the text and make

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/nopattern-jumper-effect/

Page 63: psd and abduzeedo

some final adjustments like painting or hiding some parts of the image.

Conclusion

There are many different ways to create this effect, this time I wanted to use the Color Dodge and Burn Tools because they give you a lot of freedom to draw and create the lighting effects. You can even add some gradient overlays for a different effect, what’s important here I think is the technique and all sort of effects we can create with it.

Seriously Cool Photoshop Explosion Effect

In Effects by FabioExplosions are cool. Seriously cool. So when I received some emails asking about how to create a break apart, explosion effect, I knew it'd be worth making a tutorial on. Read on to find out how to break apart a body, then add some awesome lighting and glow, nopattern style, to finish the image off.

What We're Making

You can download the original image I used on this project at www.sxc.hu.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 66: psd and abduzeedo

Step 1

Create a new document, it can be any size, I used 800x600px. Fill the background layer with black. After that place your photo in the center of the document.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 67: psd and abduzeedo

Step 2

Select the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) and select the girl. When you complete the selection process, go to Select > Refine Edge. A dialog box will open with some settings, select to preview the image on black and make some adjustments until you find a nice result. Add a bit of feather, radius, and expand the selection. Then press OK.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 68: psd and abduzeedo

Step 3

Invert the selection, Select > Inverse, and delete the background of the photo. After that go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen and the Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Set 2% for the noise amount.

Step 4 - Breaking Apart

With the Lasso Tool (L), select the girl’s leg like I did, then go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. After that select the Paint Bucket Tool (G) and fill the selection with black. Make sure that you paint the selection.

Page 70: psd and abduzeedo

Step 5

Here we will need some brushes, you can find good brushes at brusheezy.com. I used a set of brushes called Blood-grunge.

Select the Brush Tool (B) and white for the color. Pick one of the brushes, I used the first one of the set and reduce its size to 300 or less. After that start painting the hidden leg, you will need just a few clicks with brush tool to get a good result.

Page 71: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 72: psd and abduzeedo

Step 6

The previous step broke apart the leg but the shatters didn't spread like a real explosion. So in order to do that we will use the Clone Stamp Tool (S).

Create a new layer above the girl’s layer and select the Clone Stamp Tool. Choose Current & Below in the Sample settings. If you have never used the clone tool before, the first thing to do is define a source point. To do that hold the ALT key and select the source point. After that, start cloning some parts of the exploded leg to spread the shatters. The last thing here is go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen.

Step 7

Repeat the Steps 4, 5, and 6, but select the arm this time to break apart.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 73: psd and abduzeedo

Step 8 - Clouds

Add a new layer on top of the others. Select white for the foreground color and black for the background. Then go to Filters > Render > Clouds. Now select the Lasso Tool. Set the feather to 20px and select an area around the girl, you will have a selection like the image below. After that just go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 74: psd and abduzeedo

Page 75: psd and abduzeedo

Step 9

Double click on the clouds layer to open the Layer Styles dialog box. The first thing to do here is use Screen for the Blend Mode and use 28% for the Fill Opacity. Then select Gradient Overlay. The Blend Mode will be Color Dodge this time with 55% opacity. Use the same colors as the image below.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 76: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 77: psd and abduzeedo

Step 10 - Lighting Effects

I used some brushes to create the light effects, you can find them here: http://r0man.de/kostenlose_brushes_photoshop.htm.

Create a new folder above all the other layers, rename it to “lights” and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. Then select white for the color and the Brush Tool. Test some brushes to see the result. Create a layer for each effect.

Page 78: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 79: psd and abduzeedo

Step 11

Create a new layer inside the “lights” folder. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), make sure the Feather is 0px. Create a rectangular selection. Then select the Gradient Tool (G). For the colors, use white for both start and end, but change the end’sopacity to 0. Then just fill the rectangle with the gradient like the image below.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 80: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 81: psd and abduzeedo

Step 12

Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool (L) and use 10px for the Feather. Create an elliptical selection like the image below. The just go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection.

Step 13

Duplicate the layer and go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical. Then go to Edit > Transform > Scale and reduce the height only. After that just group these two layers. You can create more lights just duplicating the group, rotating and scaling it.

Page 82: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 83: psd and abduzeedo

Step 14 - Illustrator

In Illustrator select the Pen Tool (P) and create two curved lines To do that hold the button every time you click to create a curved point. Use 0.5pt for the stroke weight. After that select the Blend Tool (W) and click over one line and then on the other. To change the Blend properties, just double click on the Blend Icon. Choose Specific Steps for the Spacing and use like 50 steps. Copy the the blend.

Step 15http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/seriously-cool-photoshop-explosion-effect/

Page 84: psd and abduzeedo

Back to Photoshop, paste the blend over the girl, after that select the girl body, to do that just click over the girl’s icon on the layer palette holding the Command Key (mac) or Control Key (PC), that will select only the girl’s body. After, go to Layer > Layer Mask > Hide Selection. That will hide the parts of the blend that are in front of the girl.

Open the Layer Style dialog box, change the Fill Opacity to 0 and select Gradient Overlay. Use 20% for the opacity and use the rainbow colors like the image below.

Page 86: psd and abduzeedo

Conclusion

There are lots of different ways to do the break apart effect, I chose the one that was, in my opinion the fastest and easiest one. You can see that I spent more time creating the lighting effects than doing the break apart effect.

Create a Cool Halftone Effect

In Effects by Sean Hodge

In this tutorial we're going to go a bit retro. You'll learn how to create halftone patterns and creatively cut up an image of a modelholding a boombox. You'll then use those cut elements to make your design. We use some layer styles to get everything to come together cohesively. The effects are fun and you can apply these methods to other designs as well.

Step 1

Start out by downloading/purchasing our image from iStockPhoto: Boombox Image. Alternatively, you could apply these techniques to an image of your choosing and still follow along (or as in the download PSD you could just use the 'comp' that iStock lets you download).

I downloaded the largest image available for this photo. There is some reasoning behind this madness. We'll be using cut images from the large photo to place into our design. Using the large image will allow us to have larger speaker elements.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 88: psd and abduzeedo

Make a copy of this large photo. Open up the copy and resize it to 500px wide and make sure Constrain Proportions is checked so the height changes proportionally. Save this file as .psd and name it boombox_final. This will be our canvas for this tutorial. Also, open up our original large image we downloaded as we will be cutting some images from it starting in Step 3.

Step 2

Let's prepare our boombox_final.psd document. First cut out the boombox image. Also cut out the top half of our model. Below is an image of the top half of the model cut out. You can see the boombox cutout in the preview of the layers palette as well as the layer order. We need to cut out these pieces so that we can place elements behind them as we build our design.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 89: psd and abduzeedo

Step 3

Let's jump over to our large image. Grab our Elliptical Marquee Tool. Draw a selection that covers the right speaker. Then (Command/Ctrl + Click) and select Refine Edge. Use the settings in the image below.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 90: psd and abduzeedo

Step 4

Turn on Edit in Quick Mask Mode (Q). Then go to Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone. Use the settings below.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 91: psd and abduzeedo

Step 5

Let's go back to Edit in Standard Mode (Q). Copy this selection.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 92: psd and abduzeedo

Step 6

Now paste this cut out image of the speaker into the boombox_final design. And move it to the bottom left corner.

Step 7

Now we are going to follow the same steps to place some texture over the speaker. First make a small selection in our large stock photo. Then (Command/Ctrl + Click) and select Refine Edge. The only difference in this setting is that we set our Feather to 15px. The rest is the same. Turn on Edit in Quick Mask Mode (Q). Then go to Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone. Use the same settings as we did before only this time change the Max. Radius to 10 Pixels. Then go back to Edit in Standard Mode (Q). Copy our selection. Then paste it into our design and move it to the bottom left corner over the speaker.

Page 93: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 94: psd and abduzeedo

Step 8

We're going to jump over to our large stock image again. Grab the Brush Tool. Give it a Master Diameter of 900px and aHardness of 0 percent. Turn on Edit in Quick Mask Mode (Q). And click in the center of the image. Then go to Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone. Use the settings in the image below.

Step 9

Let's go back to Edit in Standard Mode (Q). It should look like the selection below. Invert the selection by going to Select >Inverse. Copy this selection.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 95: psd and abduzeedo

Step 10

Paste the selection into our boombox_final document. Give it a layer style of Lighten. You can see the white dots emerge in the bottom of our document. Place it so that it matches the image below. Then copy the speaker we placed before and move it behind our model, but in front of the large dots.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 96: psd and abduzeedo

Step 11

Create a new layer in our boombox_final.psd design document. Turn on Edit in Quick Mask Mode (Q). Grab the Brush Tool. Make sure its set to Master Diameter of 300px with a Hardness of 0 percent. Draw across the bottom of the image. Then go to Filter > Pixelete > Color Halftone. Use the settings below.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 97: psd and abduzeedo

Step 12

Let's go back to Edit in Standard Mode (Q). Create a pink gradient and draw it from the left and angle down to the right to get a result similar to the image below. Reposition this layer in the Layers Palette just above the speaker behind the boom box. Set the layer style to Screen.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 98: psd and abduzeedo

Step 13

Copy the gradient. Use the Free Transform to reduce the size and reposition in the bottom right hand corner over the larger pink gradient. Keep the setting to Screen. Then make another copy of this and Free Transform it by reducing and rotating it to fit in the top left hand corner. Do that one more time for the top right hand corner.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 99: psd and abduzeedo

Step 14

Let's copy some elements. I copied the texture in the bottom left corner and placed it behind the bottom right of the Boombox. I also placed a copy in the top right. I made multiple copies of the speakers. Then I used the Free Transform tool to scale them. The image below shows where these copies were placed.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 100: psd and abduzeedo

Step 15

Create a new layer. Turn on Edit in Quick Mask Mode (Q). Grab the Brush Tool. Make sure its set to Master Diameter of 50px with a Hardness of 0 percent. We make our line follow the edges of some of the elements in our design. Then go to Filter > Pixelete > Color Halftone. Use the settings in the image below.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 101: psd and abduzeedo

Step 16

Let's go back to Edit in Standard Mode (Q). Then fill our selection with a pink gradient.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 102: psd and abduzeedo

Step 17

Set this layer to Vivid Light to achieve the effect below.

Step 18

Next we are going to make our text. Grab the Text Tool and write the word boombox in all lowercase. I used a font called Silomwith Negative 70 Character Tracking and 120pt Type. I'll show the Layer Styles used to create the font effect in thescreenshots following the image of the text effect below.

Page 103: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/create-a-cool-halftone-effect/

Page 104: psd and abduzeedo

Step 19

Now were just going to have some fun and copy some elements around the design until it looks cool. I copied the x and played with its Gradient Overlay colors. I placed a handful of them by the boombox and also up top. The gradients have different variations from pink to purple. I also used Free Transform to change the size and rotate the letters. I added a couple morespeakers at the top left behind the large x. Then I copied the brush tool pattern we had made a couple times and placed that over some elements top right and then top left. The final image is below.

Conclusion

Halftone patterns are a lot of fun and like anything in photoshop they can be combined with layer styles to create some cool effects. Finding interesting areas of an image to copy and overlay your design is a useful technique. In this case we used a speaker. Try cutting out other parts of your next design to mix and match with various effects. Thanks.

Creating a Vinyl Record In Photoshop

In Effects by Arik

In this tutorial I will explain how to make a vinyl graphic. This tutorial will outline techniques to avoid choppy edges and create proper texturing and lighting.

Step 1.

Let's start out by creating a new file. I used a 300x300 pixel canvas set at 72dpi (regular settings), and I filled my background with a soft gradient. You can fill it with whatever you want.

Create a layer set and call it 'vinyl'. Create a new layer within the layer set, also called 'vinyl' and fill it with a dark grey (almost

Page 106: psd and abduzeedo

black) colour like #111111. Fill this layer with noise by going to Filter > Noise > Add noise... and use the settings shown below in the screenshot.

Step 2

The noise we just added will be used to create the circular texture that is typical for a vinyl record. Go to Filter > Blur > Radial blurand use the settings shown below. After this, duplicate the layer and set the 'vinyl copy' layer to overlay. To bring out the texture a little more, I went ahead and navigated to Image > Adjustments > Brightness /Contrast and applied the settings seen below to the 'vinyl copy' layer.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vinyl-record-in-photoshop/

Page 107: psd and abduzeedo

Step 3

Time to cut out our circular shape. I will be using the Ellipse Tool (U) for this job. Now I've set my Ellipse tool to 'Shape Layers'instead of 'Paths' because this way I can easily center my shape once I draw it out. Place your crosshairs (cursor) more or less in the middle and while holding down SHIFT and ALT draw a circle. Holding down SHIFT and ALT ensures that you make a 'perfect' circle and that it creates it from the middle outwards.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vinyl-record-in-photoshop/

Page 108: psd and abduzeedo

Switch to the Move tool (V) and hit CTRL+A so that you select the entire canvas. Using the alignment controls at the top press 'Align vertical centers' and 'Align horizontal centers'. This moves the circular shape to the center of the canvas.

Step 4

Next we will cut out our actual shape. CTRL+CLICK on the 'Shape 1' layer and hide it by clicking on the eye icon next to it. Now select the 'vinyl' layer set and hit the mask button. This masks out the selection.

Duplicate the 'shape 1' layer, resize it to about 5% (hit CTRL+T and then enter 5% in the size boxes). CTRL+CLICK the new'shape 1 copy' layer and with a black brush, paint the selection black in the mask we made for our 'vinyl' layer set. This will create a hole in the middle, which is typical for a vinyl. When I did this I noticed that I had to nudge my 'shape 1 copy' layer a bit to the left and up so that it looked right.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vinyl-record-in-photoshop/

Page 109: psd and abduzeedo

Step 5

Now that we have our basic shape and texture done, it's time to bring this baby to life. First we need to add some shine. We're going to do this in two steps. In this step we will apply subtle contrast lighting across the object and in step 2 we are going to make it pop. Create a new layer above the (hidden) 'shape 1 copy' layer and name it 'contrast'. Reset your colours to black and white by hitting D on your keyboard and go to Filter > Render > Clouds. Next go to Filter > Render > Difference Clouds and hit CTRL+F a few times (this re-applies the filter). Go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur and use the settings shown below in the screenshot.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vinyl-record-in-photoshop/

Page 110: psd and abduzeedo

Then set the layer to soft light and experiment with brightness/contrast. In my case I moved the contrast down to around -20 and raised the brightness to about +50. I also used a mask and a 50% black brush to remove the black areas. I just want to keep thehighlights. Eventually I decided to lower the opacity of the layer to 75% and then I was satisfied. Play around and see what looks right to you.

Step 6

Now it's time to make it really pop. Create a gradient as shown below:

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vinyl-record-in-photoshop/

Page 111: psd and abduzeedo

Create a new layer and name it 'highlights'. Drag the gradient out in the middle as shown in 1 (below), then go to Edit >Transform > Perspective and select the top left corner, hold SHIFT and drag down. Drag until the handles overlap as in 2 (below) and then hit ENTER. Hit CTRL+T and stretch the gradient out a bit vertically. Set this layer to SOFT LIGHT, duplicate it twice and spin the top layer around a bit until you get something similar to 3 (below).

Highlights can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, it just depends on the light source and it's direction. Personally I like to vary the type of highlights I use depending on the project.

Step 7

For this vinyl I created a sticker for the center. I made a circle with the Ellipse tool, then added some text and a random graphic I brushed on. You can do whatever you like with the sticker design. I also added another layer of extra bright highlights and a colour balance layer on top to fine tune my colouring. All of this is optional depending on the project or aesthetic you're looking for. Finally, I added a layer that looked like clear plastic over the sticker, as real vinyls have. I did this by creating a circle below the sticker and highlights layers and filling it with a dark grey colour.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vinyl-record-in-photoshop/

Page 112: psd and abduzeedo

Conclusion

So there you go, a nice little graphic that can be used in a variety of ways. What I like most about this technique is that even though not all of the layers are vector layers you can still resize the image without loss of quality. Apart from the layers which are used for the sticker (which could be vector too), the rest is either text (which is stretchable) or masked layers, and masks are also stretchable. In fact, we have a safety here. If you stretch out the mask and it becomes blurry, then just unhide your shape layer, stretch that out and mask again. Even though you can scale this, keep in mind that if you try to scale it up dramatically you will lose the fine texture lines on the vinyl.

Thank you for viewing this tutorial and make sure you have fun while making yours!

Creating a Vector Composite Effect from a Photo

In Effects by Bill LabusThis tutorial will demonstrate how to take an image, in this case a woman's face, and give the appearance that it is entirely composed of vector shapes. Along the way, we'll use some fairly basic techniques, including clipping masks and displacement maps, to achieve a unique effect!

This is the image we'll be creating:

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vector-composite-effect-from-a-photo/

Page 114: psd and abduzeedo

Step 1

To begin, create a new document of pretty much whatever size you'd like. I personally prefer a wider look for this effect, but any size should work. You should however probably stick to a landscape aspect ratio, at least for following this tutorial.

I chose an image size of 720 x 480 pixels, at a resolution of 300 pixels per inch.

Once you've created your new image, fill the background layer with solid black.

Step 2

Next, we have to find an image to work with. I chose a picture of a woman's face that I found on the stock photography website stock.xchng, however, the owner of the photo requested that I credit the website iofoto.com, so I've just put both here.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vector-composite-effect-from-a-photo/

Page 115: psd and abduzeedo

You can use an image of almost anything for this effect, but to follow this tutorial, your best bet is to choose an image similar to mine, i.e. a human face.

Once you have your image, place it into your document as a new layer. Remove everything else in the picture, just leaving the face. I've also adjusted the brightness and saturation on my image. You can preserve the entire person's head, but I personally think the effect looks better with the back of the head being cutoff, leaving just the face.

Step 3

Duplicate the face layer, and make sure it's positioned exactly on top of the original face. Press Shift + Control + U to desaturate the layer, and then go to Filter > Blur > Lens Blur. Make sure the setting for Source is selected as Transparency, and use settings of 10, 0 and 0 for Radius, Blade Curvature and Rotation, respectively. We'll see later on why blurring this layer is necessary.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vector-composite-effect-from-a-photo/

Page 116: psd and abduzeedo

Step 4

Before we go any further, we need to save our document again, under a different name. So, make sure the top, blurred layer is visible, and save your document as 'dispmap', or whatever you want to call it. This file will be used as our displacement map later on.

Now we need our vector shapes which will ultimately combine to actually form the woman's face, or whatever image you chose. I used quite a few different shapes from GoMedia's Arsenal Vector Sets 2 [Hooladanders] and 3 [Hooladanders 2]. You have to pay for them, but if you'd just like to try out the effect, a couple of shapes in the free Vector Pack Sample should work.

Once you have your shapes, start dragging a few into your Photoshop document. If it asks you how to paste them, choose Smart Object. How you place your objects here will greatly affect the end result. You may be tempted to just throw the shapes on any which way over your image, but you should take care to make sure they flow with the the contours of the image. This doesn't have to be perfect as some adjustments will be made later, but just randomly placed objects will not produce as good an effect. Notice how in my image, all of the vector shapes not only flow with the contour of the woman's face, but also flow in the same general directionrelative to each other. Their weight is also distributed toward the front of the face, with the tails of the shapes trailing toward the back of the head. Remember, we want it to look as though these vector shapes are all gathering together and combining to form the image.

Also important to take into consideration is the number of shapes you lay over your image. While it may seem like adding more

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vector-composite-effect-from-a-photo/

Page 117: psd and abduzeedo

shapes will produce a more complex and intricate look, it will actually take away from the desired effect, because almost the entire original image will be visible. We want to be able to see the black background through different areas in between the shapes.

Step 5

Now, select your first vector shape layer, and go to Filter > Distort > Displace. Leave the Horizontal and Vertical Scale values at 10, and select the Stretch to Fit and Repeat Edge Pixels options and click OK. When the file dialog appears, select the file you saved earlier as 'dispmap' (or whatever you called it) and click Open.

For anyone unfamiliar with this feature, displacement mapping takes an object or layer, in our case a vector shape, and, using another image file (a displacement map) transforms the image so that it would fit over the map. It determines this by the color of each pixel in the displacement map, with lighter pixels corresponding to what would be a higher area on a 3D model of the image. The reason we copied the original image of the woman's face and desaturated it was to allow for an easier mapping by eliminating colors. We also blurred the image because displacement mapping in Photoshop is very accurate. If we had tried it on the original image, our vectorshapes would appear choppy because in reality they were mapped to the smallest bumps and textures on the woman's skin. Blurring the image slightly leaves only the smooth contours of the woman's face, allowing for our vector shapes to maintain their smoothness but still conform to the face.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vector-composite-effect-from-a-photo/

Page 118: psd and abduzeedo

Step 6

Once you have used the displacement mapping on all of your vector shapes, you need to then duplicate your original image layer as many times as the number of shapes you have. What we need is a copy of the original image for every vector shape we have, with the copy on top of its shape in the layers palatte. When you're finished arranging everything, you will have alternating image and vector shape layers, starting at the top with an image layer.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vector-composite-effect-from-a-photo/

Page 119: psd and abduzeedo

Step 7

We now need to create the clipping masks that will transfer our original image into the vector shapes. So, for each copy of the image layer in the layers palatte, right click it and select Create Clipping Mask. Don't worry if no visible changes occur; you won't seethem until you make the very last clipping mask. You can tell if you've made the mask successfully if there is a small arrow pointing down in the image layer, and the vector shape layer below it is underlined.

Step 8

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vector-composite-effect-from-a-photo/

Page 120: psd and abduzeedo

Once you have made all of the clipping masks, you should begin to see the final image take shape. However, we're not done just yet. Now select the topmost vector shape layer, and add a drop shadow to it. I used an angle of 140 degrees, and settings of 10, 10 and 20 for Distance, Spread and Size, respectively.

Once you've got a shadow effect that looks good, right click on that vector shape layer and select Copy Layer Style. Then, right click all of the other vector shape layers and select Paste Layer Style.

Step 9

At this point we've finished the final effect on the image. I added a Radial Gradient to the background to give the impression that light is coming from the left to match the general shading of the image.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-vector-composite-effect-from-a-photo/

Page 121: psd and abduzeedo

Final Image

Finally I have added some text, and darkened the neck area so it sits further in the shadows. Additionally I upped the contrast to make the image a little more eerie.

This technique can be applied to any image using any vector shapes. The key to making it look convincing is matching the vector objects to the shape, countours, and flow of the object image they're to be wrapped around. It's an odd effect, but I hope you were able to gain something from this tutorial, and good luck with your own work!

Quickly Build an Abstract Background of Colored Bars

In Effects by JonathanOftentimes there's a need for a quick but unique design. In this tutorial, I'll be showing you a short but attractive way to create a graphic for backgrounds, wallpapers, greeting cards, designs, and all that other good stuff. You will learn a simple photoshop trick that you can easily manipulate for your daily needs.

Step 1

First off let's start by creating a new document and applying the oh so obligatory clouds (Filter > Render > Clouds).

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/quickly-build-a-abstract-background-of-colored-bars/

Page 123: psd and abduzeedo

Step 2

Now that we have our base to work with apply Mezzotint (Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint) with type "Long Strokes".

Step 3

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/quickly-build-a-abstract-background-of-colored-bars/

Page 124: psd and abduzeedo

Doesn't look much right now, but with the magic of motion blur (Filter > Blur > Motion Blur), with an angle of 90 degrees and a distance of 999 for the settings, everything will be better.

Step 4

Now add a new layer, and overlay some color over it. Here I chose the Rainbow Gradient using the Gradient Tool (G), but you can choose whatever suits you. When you have a layer of color, set the layer mode to Overlay.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/quickly-build-a-abstract-background-of-colored-bars/

Page 125: psd and abduzeedo

Step 5

If you feel like being creative, you can tweak some more by changing the curves (CTRL + M) to make the image either brighter or gloomier depending on the mood.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/quickly-build-a-abstract-background-of-colored-bars/

Page 126: psd and abduzeedo

Step 6

Now create a new layer. Then select the Marquee Tool (M), set it to elliptical, and the Feather to 30, and select around the picture (use the example below for reference). Then select inverse (CTRL + SHIFT + I), and fill (Edit > Fill) with black. Then change the opacity to 75% so that it is a bit more subtle.

Step 7

Again create a new layer, and with the same Marquee tool settings as above, select (use the example below as reference). Then change the curve (CTRL + M) to something like in the example. Afterward, change the opacity to 60% so that it isn't blinding. Try to be creative and change the settings to your taste.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/quickly-build-a-abstract-background-of-colored-bars/

Page 127: psd and abduzeedo

Step 8

Now we are done with the background. You can choose to do whatever you want with it. But I'll leave you guys with a simple example that you can easily do for generic jobs.

Reset the Marquee Tool to rectangular with 0 feather. Then create a horizontal bar in the middle of the picture. Then fill it withwhite (Edit > Fill) and lower the opacity to say, 50%.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/quickly-build-a-abstract-background-of-colored-bars/

Page 128: psd and abduzeedo

Step 9

Now while still selecting the area, select the first layer (The clouds + mezzotint + motion blur layer), copy it (CTRL + C) and paste it (CTRL +V) in a layer above it, but below the color overlay. Deselect, and apply Gaussian blur to it (Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur) with a setting of about 3.2 pixels.

http://psdtuts.com/tutorials-effects/quickly-build-a-abstract-background-of-colored-bars/

Page 129: psd and abduzeedo

Step 10

Going back to the top layer, duplicate (Layer > Duplicate Layer) the white horizontal bar layer you created in step 8 andtransform it (CTRL + T). Then  make it slightly smaller height wise. About 2px from the top and the bottom.

Step 11

Finally, add a text on top of that layer, and type in what your heart desire. Congratulations, you are done!

It's a simple technique that can still produce eye catching results!

How to Create a 3d Shelf Element Similar to Dragon Interactive

In Interface by Arik

In the reader suggestions recently, I found a request to see how to produce the shelf interface on the incredibly cool Dragon Interactive website - a Los Angeles based creative agency. So here's a method for producing the shelf effect.

Editor's Note: Dragon Interactive requested us to note, that this tutorial is not actually written or supported by Dragon themselves

Step 1

Using the Pen Tool (P) create a path as shown below. Don't worry about the background color, I chose this color so that you can see the path. Next go to your paths palette and hit the 'Create New Path' button. This will create a new 'path layer' and save your existing path to the layer below it. I named mine 'Separator'.

http://psdtuts.com/interface-tutorials/how-to-create-a-3d-shelf-element-similar-to-dragon-interactive/

Page 132: psd and abduzeedo

Note: If at any point you lose the selection of your path, go to the paths tab and select the separator layer. This is important for the coming steps.

Step 2

Create a new layer, select the Brush Tool (B) and select a 1px hard brush. Switch your foreground color to a Black and then select the pen tool again. Now right click on the path and choose 'Stroke Path...'. In the box that pops up, make sure the brushtool is selected and that 'Simulate Pressure' is off. Call this layer 'black separator'. Hit enter if the path is blocking your view of the black line. And don't worry, as I mentioned earlier you can re-select this path in the paths palette.

Step 3

http://psdtuts.com/interface-tutorials/how-to-create-a-3d-shelf-element-similar-to-dragon-interactive/

Page 133: psd and abduzeedo

Duplicate the 'black separator' layer, make sure the Move Tool (V) is selected, then hit the left arrow key once. This will nudge that line one pixel to the left, now hit CTRL+I to invert the colors. Name this layer 'white separator' and place them in a layer set called 'separator'. Note that the 'Create a New Group' button is right next to the 'Create a New Layer' button. For now keep the mode of this layer set to 'normal' although we will change it later on in the tutorial.

Step 4

Select the Paint Bucket Tool (G) and use the settings shown in the screenshot below. Then create a layer below the separator set and fill the left side of the separator with #3d3d3d.

Create a layer above that and do the same for the right side except this time use #111111. Nudge the 'dark grey' fill one pixel to the left (using the arrow keys!) and the 'light grey' fill one to the right. You should be aware that if you are at 100% zoom view,then hitting the left/right arrow key will move 1px, if however you are zoomed out further then it will move a different number of pixels. For example if you are at 66% view, then hitting the arrow key once will move 2px, at 50% view it will move 3px and so on. So make sure you are at 100% :-)

After this using the brush tool or the pencil tool brush along the sides of the canvas to fill that one transparent pixel back up with the correct color. Drop these two into a set called 'background'.

http://psdtuts.com/interface-tutorials/how-to-create-a-3d-shelf-element-similar-to-dragon-interactive/

Page 134: psd and abduzeedo

Step 5

We have our basic set up ready, now it's time to add the highlights and shadows.. Create a gradient with the color #707070 as shown below and then gradient fill a new layer with that gradient. Make sure the size of the gradient is about the same as mine. Ifyou are having trouble with gradients you can either expand them vertically by hitting CTRL+T and dragging them out vertically or you can use the Filter > Blur > Motion Blur filter (I prefer the free transform).

On top of that, on a new layer, create a similar narrow gradient, filled with white and set that to 'Overlay' and drop the opacity to 40%. I put these two layers into a set called 'highlights'.

http://psdtuts.com/interface-tutorials/how-to-create-a-3d-shelf-element-similar-to-dragon-interactive/

Page 135: psd and abduzeedo

Step 6

The shadows were created in a similar way. First a 'large shadow' gradient, using black with the layer set so 'Soft Light' and 80% opacity, a stretched out gradient was created. Then on top of that a 'small shadow' was added, again using black but this time the layer was set to 'Overlay' and the opacity dropped down to 40. These two layers were put in a set called 'shadows'.

Step 7

The highlights and shadows are way too defined on the dark grey area, time to fix that.

Put the 'shadows' and 'highlights' into a new set, I called mine S/H. Make sure the highlights set is below the shadows set. Add a layer mask to the S/H set.

Now CTRL+Click on your 'dark grey' layer. This time, using a low opacity black brush go over the masked area within theselection. With each stroke the shadows and highlights fade away. Regulate the opacity of your black brush in order to gain more control over the transparency.

The more opaque the brush, the more transparent the shadows and highlights will become. If you still feel you need even more control, you can add masks to the layers themselves. For instance, adding a mask to the 'highlight large' layer will let you edit the opacity of that layer only. Use this to your advantage.

http://psdtuts.com/interface-tutorials/how-to-create-a-3d-shelf-element-similar-to-dragon-interactive/

Page 136: psd and abduzeedo

Step 8

Now comes the hard part. Depending on your taste and skill you will now have to brush in additional shadows and highlights. I suggest you put all of the brushwork into a separate set called 'Brush' at the top of the document. Use low opacity black brushes to add shadows. Patience is key here. There is no fixed way of doing it, I used a big (180px) soft black brush set to 10 percent opacity and tapped along the edges.

Step 9

http://psdtuts.com/interface-tutorials/how-to-create-a-3d-shelf-element-similar-to-dragon-interactive/

Page 137: psd and abduzeedo

Duplicate the 'background' layer set and hit CTRL+E. This will rasterize it into a single layer. Use the dodge and burn tools to add additional highlights and shadows if necessary. Highlight mode works best here, with a low exposure (around 15-20%).

Step 10

Until now we've used the separator to help us in our process with the shadows/highlights etc. so that we have a clear division between the light and dark area. Now we are going to finalize this design. Set the 'separator' set to 'Overlay'. Wow, an indent appears! If you are not happy with it, you duplicate both the 'white separator' and 'black separator' layers and nudge them one pixel to the right. It creates a less prominent appearance.

http://psdtuts.com/interface-tutorials/how-to-create-a-3d-shelf-element-similar-to-dragon-interactive/

Page 138: psd and abduzeedo

Step 2

Set the background color to black and the foreground color to white. Select the background layer and go toFilter>Texture>Texturizer...

http://psdtuts.com/designing-tutorials/quick-grungy-poster/

Page 139: psd and abduzeedo

Step 3

Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T) and type PSD. Then Select the Rectangle Tool (U) and create some shapes like the image below. After that group the PSD text and the rectangles. Rename the group to “white lines”.

Page 141: psd and abduzeedo

Step 4

Rotate the group like the image below.

Step 5

Using the Pen Tool (P), create some shapes to fill the gaps before the P, the S, and the D. Make sure that these shapes are beneath the “white lines" group. Use yellow for the first shape, red for the second and blue for the third. After that group these layers and name the group “colors”.

http://psdtuts.com/designing-tutorials/quick-grungy-poster/

Page 142: psd and abduzeedo

http://psdtuts.com/designing-tutorials/quick-grungy-poster/

Page 143: psd and abduzeedo

Step 6

If you use Photoshop CS3 convert the yellow, red and blue shapes to Smart Filters and go to Texture>Texturizer again. Apply the filter to all 3 shapes. If you don't use the CS3 version just apply the filter.

Step 7

Now select the white lines and using the Layer Styles, select Drop Shadow. After that put the PSD text layer in front of the lines.

http://psdtuts.com/designing-tutorials/quick-grungy-poster/

Page 144: psd and abduzeedo

Step 8

Double click on the PSD text layer and in the Layer Style box, select Drop Shadow This time lets make a bigger and stronger shadow. After that click with the right button of the mouse over the text layer and select Create Layer. That command will

http://psdtuts.com/designing-tutorials/quick-grungy-poster/

Page 145: psd and abduzeedo

create a layer only with the shadow. Then go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All and delete some parts of the shadow that go above the white lines. Make the text and the lines be the same.

Step 9

Create a new layer and name it “dirty”, change the Blend Mode to Color Burn. Select black for the background color and awhite for the foreground color. Go to Filter>Render>Render Clouds.

Step 10

Hold the Command Key (Mac) or Control (PC) and click on the thumbnails of the layers, that will create selections from the

layers. With all white objects selected, create a new layer and fill the selection with white. After that go to Texture>Texturizer...

Step 11

Select the white objects again and create a new layer. Then go to Filter>Render>Render Clouds. After that go toImage>Adjustments>Levels and add more white to the clouds.

Step 12

Now go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation. Select the colorize option and change move the sliders until you get a beigecolor.

Step 13

Select all layers and group them. With the group folder selected go to Layer>Add Layer Mask>Reveal All. Now select somegrunge or dirty brushes and start deleting some parts of the image. You can get amazing brushes at http://www.brusheezy.com/brushes

Page 152: psd and abduzeedo

Step 14

Using the Horizontal Text Tool (T) create the word TUTS. Rotate it to the same angle as the other text, perpendicular to the lines. And you can repeat the Texturizer filter as well.

Conclusion

You can use this technique in lots of different projects, like logos, posters, and website headers for example. The most important thing again is play with the tool and change some values to see what happens, like the Render Clouds. This time we use that filter to create stains in our design a totally different approach like when we used it creating light effects.

RETRO LIGHT EFFECTS - PIXELMATOR TUTORIAL (2 COPIES OF PIXELMATOR TO GIVE AWAY)

A few days ago we published an excellent video from a French band called Justice, the name of the clip was DVNO and the coolest thing was that it was full of references from the 80’s. Besides that, there was the great interview with James White, and again, his work is full of elements from the 80’s. With all that retro inspiration in mind, I decided to write a new Pixelmator tutorial.

So in this Pixelmator tutorial I will show you how to create a very fast retro design coming straight from

that old Atari 2600 that we used to play Decathlon and get our hands full of blisters...

We have 2 copies of Pixelmator to give away, so just leave a comment and you can get a free copy of this nice software. The final day will be April, 1st.

Step 1

Create a new document, 800x600 is fine, then select the Gradient Tool (G) and create a new gradient

color in the Gradient Palette, use black and purple (#332233) for the colors and use Radial for the

type.

Step 3

Create a new layer, name it "lines", fill it with black and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge, then

go to Filter>Generator>Stripes. Make sure that the foreground color is white. Use 6 for width and 0

for hardness.

Step 4

Go to Edit>Transform>Perspective. Move the vertices until you get a nice perspective like the image

Step 5

Go to Layer>Add Layer Mask, then get the Brush Tool(B), select the white color and a medium

brush, like 100px width and hardness 0. Start deleting the end of some lines, make some shorter

than the others.

Step 6

Select the Type Tool(T) and add your text, the font I used was Bauhaus. After that go to

Layer>Rasterize Type Layer. Then go to Edit>Transform>Distort. Then just pull the vertices to

make the text follow the line’s perspective.

The last thing here is holding the Command Key, click on the layers thumbnail to create a selection of

they 80’s layer. Then select the mask of the "Lines" layer and fill the selection with white.

Step 7

Duplicate the layer and go to Filter>Quartz Composer>Stylize>Neon. Select pink for the color and use

the Amount of 0.08.

Page 161: psd and abduzeedo

Step 8

Duplicate the layer and go to Filter>Blur>Zoom… use the Amount of 50 like the image below.

Step 9

Create a new layer, beneath the layer with zoom blur. Fill the new layer with black and change the

Blend Mode to Color Dodge. After that select the Brush Tool(B), white for the color, and a brush with

a medium size like 80-100px, the hardness has to be 0%.

http://abduzeedo.com/retro-light-effects-pixelmator-tutorial-2-copies-pixelmator-give-away

Page 162: psd and abduzeedo

Now just paint some parts of the lines, just one click and you will create a nice light effect.

Step 10

Create a new layer and go to Filter>Generator>Random Generator. This filter will create a sort of

noise effect. Then just change the Blend Mode to Screen and use like 10% opacity.

Step 11

Create a new layer and fill it with a linear gradient, use Red, Green, and Blue for the colors and change

http://abduzeedo.com/retro-light-effects-pixelmator-tutorial-2-copies-pixelmator-give-away

Page 163: psd and abduzeedo

the Blend Mode to Overlay.

Conclusion

This image was experiment I did just to learn a bit more of Pixelmator. The more I use it the more I like

it, even though it lacks some very important features like the Layer Styles and the powerful brush

engine that Photoshop has, I think Pixelmator is a great tool and it will probably get much better in the

newer version.

SPARKLING HOT GIRL IN PHOTOSHOP

I’ve seen some very nice images mixing photos with light effects and sparks. If you go to flickr in those Photoshop and Graphic Design groups you will see images with this effect. There’s a designer, I think he'sBrazilian, who has some amazing designs using this style, his name is Leandro Demetrius and it’s really worth checking his work out.

Anyway, in this tutorial I will show you how to create an image using this technique. It basically mixes

some techniques from tutorials like Magic Lighting Effect, Amazing Photoshop light effect in 10 Steps,

and the latest Create the MSNBC header effect.

Step 1

Create a new document, mine is 800x600 pixels. After that double click on the background layer to

open the Layer Style dialog box and add a Gradient Overaly. Select Radial for the Style and use a

dark red to black for the colors

Step 3

After you create a path with the shape of the woman, go to the Path palette, right next to the Layer

box to create a selection from the path.

Step 4

Back to the Layer Palette, select the girl’s layer and then go to Selection>Refine Edge. This

command will allow us to adjust the selection in real time with some nice settings like feather, smooth,

contras, and others. Make some tests with a black background. When you have a good selection click

ok. After that go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection.

Step 5

Lets increase the contrast of our girl, go to Image>Settings>Brightness/Contrast. After that reduce

the layer like the image below. Then add a bit of noise. Filter>Noise>Add Noise.

Step 6

http://abduzeedo.com/sparkling-hot-girl-photoshop

Page 171: psd and abduzeedo

Group the girl layer so it will be inside a folder on the Layer Palette. Select the Elliptical Marquee

Tool (M), set the feather option to 30px and create a elliptical selection like the image below. Now

select the Folder instead of the girl’s layer and after that go again to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal

Selection. We will add the mask to the folder and everything inside the folder.

Step 7

Double click on the girl’s layer to open the Layer Style box. Select Outer Glow. For the Blend Mode

use Color Dodge and for the size set 35px. After that Duplicate this layer and go to

Create a layer, not inside the folder anymore. This layer has to be behind the girl. Then go to

Filter>Render>Clouds. Change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge.

Step 9

Create another layer, behind the clouds’ layer. Now go to Filter>Render>Fibers... Use 13 for the

variance and 4 for the Strength. After lets add another filter, this time Motion Blur, go to

Filter>Blur>Motion Blur. The angle will 90º and for the distance use more than 300px like the

image below.

Step 10

First rotate the layer. Then select Lasso Tool (L) set 30px for the feather and create a selection like I

did. Then one more time go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection. After that double click the layer

to open the Layer Style box. In the Layer Style’s first screen set the Fill Opacity to 60%, then add a

Gradient Overlay, use the rainbow colors.

Step 11

Here it’s all about brushes. But first create a new Folder in the Layer Palette and set the Blend Mode

to Color Dodge. After that create the layers you want to be light inside of this folder and using white

color. You can even add some different shapes and apply gaussian blur to create those rays of light.

This is one of those designs that looks a bit complicated when we see it at first. But when you start

working on it, it turns out to be much easier than we thought. You can add different light colors, more or

SWIRL MANIA IN ILLUSTRATOR & PHOTOSHOP

There are lots of ways to create swirls in Illustrator, you can even download vectors from sites such as bittbox and dezignus, and if you are using Photoshop you can download brushes with those sorts of symbols.

However in this tutorial I will show 4 ways to create swirls, and by mixing them you will learn some very

powerful techniques that will allow you to easily make tons of different styles of swirls and crazy sperm

vectors.

1st Way -  Arc, Circle, and Path tool

Select the Arc Tool and create an arc. You can change the arc's properties by holding the mouse

button and pressing the UP and DOWN keys for the angle of the arc, SPACE to move it, and ALT to

change the center point.

Now create an ellipse using the Ellipse Tool (L).

After you create the arc go to Object>Path>Outline Stroke. The stroke will be converted to a shape,

the select the Direct Selection Tool(A).

2nd Way - Blend Tool(W)

Create 2 circles, one will be the start and the other the end points of our swirl. Then select the Blend

Tool (W) and click on the small circle and after that on the big circle. Double-click the Blend Tool icon

to open the Blend Options, there you will be able to change the spacing of the elements and the

orientation. Select Specified Distance and use 1pt, for the Orientation use Align to Path.

The spine is the path along which the steps in a blended object are aligned. By default, the

spine forms a straight line.

To adjust the shape of the spine, drag the anchor points and path segments on the spine

with the Direct Selection tool.

To replace the spine with a different path, draw an object to use as the new spine. Select

the spine object and the blended object, and choose Object > Blend > Replace Spine.

To reverse the order of a blend on its spine, select the blended object and choose

Object > Blend > Reverse Spine.

You can test different styles for the blend, like adding a dark stroke with some light color.

3rd Way - Spiral Tool

Select the Spiral Tool and create a spiral, you can change the style of the spiral by holding the

mouse button and some keys like CMD/CTRL, ALT, SPACE, UP, and Down.

You can go to Object>Path>Offset Path and specify the offset to 3pt, you will create a uniform spiral.

But if you want to make the start point smaller than the end or vice-versa, you can use the spiral as

spine for a Blend.

Page 198: psd and abduzeedo

Step 2

Duplicate the swirls and resize it, repeat that to create another one, so you will have 3 swirls.

Step 4

Create another swirl this time make the circle or much bigger.

Step 7

Create a new spiral like the image below, then duplicate it again resize it like and place it above the

other spiral.

Step 8

Keep adding swirls.

http://abduzeedo.com/swirl-mania-illustrator-photoshop

Page 204: psd and abduzeedo

Step 9

Now we will add some 3D effects using the Mesh Tool (U). This tool allows us to apply multiple

gradients to one object. Just select the object then with the Mesh Tool click where you want to add a

new color.

Here in our swirl we will create a highlight area and a dark area. Repeat the process to the other swirls.

Page 205: psd and abduzeedo

Step 10

With the Pen Tool create two lines following the shape of the tail of our "sperm" shape, then apply the

Page 206: psd and abduzeedo

Step 11

Add more shapes and apply the Mesh Tool. Duplicate the yellow swirl and make it really bigger like the

image below.

Step 12

For the spiral add a gradient from pink to cyan, then go to Effect>Stylize>Inner Glow... Use Screen

for the Mode, 75% Opacity, 5pt Blur and Center.

Page 208: psd and abduzeedo

Step 13

For those stripes following the spiral we will create a brush. To do that is really simple in Illustrator. Just

create a rectangle and drag and drop it in the Brushes Palette, then in this case select New Pattern

Brush. Use the image below for reference.

After that create a spiral exactly like the one you want to add the stripes, and apply the brush.

Page 210: psd and abduzeedo

Step 14

Select the spiral without the Brush Stroke and copy it. Then select the spiral with the stroke and go to

the Transparency Palette (Window>Transparency). Double click the area next to the thumbnail, it

will create a new thumb all black, select this thumb and paste the spiral. It will create a mask, just move

the mast to align it with the original spiral. It looks complicated but it's easier than the explanation ;)

Step 15

Use the blend tool to add more elements and details to some shapes.

Page 212: psd and abduzeedo

Step 16

Create more swirls using the techniques we've seen before and just change the sizes and colors. After

that group all swirls.

End result in Illustrator.

Step 17 (Photoshop)

Create a new document and place your image, I used a photo from http://sxc.hu and 1440x900px for

the document size.

http://abduzeedo.com/swirl-mania-illustrator-photoshop

Page 213: psd and abduzeedo

Step 18

Copy the swirls in illustrator, the group with all swirls we have created, and paste it in Photoshop.

Select Paste As Smart Objects. After that go to Layer>Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss, use the

image below for reference.

http://abduzeedo.com/swirl-mania-illustrator-photoshop

Page 214: psd and abduzeedo

Step 19

Duplicate the layer and go to Edit>Transform>Flip Vertical, and reduce the size of the layer and

move it like the image below. After that select the 2 layers and convert them to Smart Objects and

rename it to "Swirls"

http://abduzeedo.com/swirl-mania-illustrator-photoshop

Page 215: psd and abduzeedo

Step 20

Duplicate the new "Swirls" and rename it to "Swirls Glow", then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur,

use 3px for the Amount, place it behind the "Swirls" and change the Blend Mode to Hard Light

http://abduzeedo.com/swirl-mania-illustrator-photoshop

Page 216: psd and abduzeedo

Step 21

Duplicate the "Swirls" layer again and go to Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal, again reduce its size

and move it like the image below. Then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur, use 3px for the amount

again, but don't change the blend mode.

Step 22

http://abduzeedo.com/swirl-mania-illustrator-photoshop

Page 217: psd and abduzeedo

Duplicate the "Swirls" layer one more time and this time just rotate it like the image below. Then go

again to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur, however this time use 5.5px for the Amount and reduce the

opacity to 70%

Conclusion

Just place your logo and that's it. You can add more elements, you can even copy and paste each

element separately and apply different layer styles to each swirl. There are many options and tons of

different results from these methods, now it's all about trying different combinations.
