PREFACE

P.S.Government Degree College, Penukonda, is one among the prominent institutions

of Higher Education in Andhra Pradesh under affiliation to Sri. Krishnadevarya University,

Anantapur in 1980. It got its U.G.C. Recognition under 2(f) and 12(B) in 1994. It continues

its journey of academic excellence in imparting Quality Higher Education by responding to

academic and administrative challenges. The 35 years of successful functioning gives this college further scope and energy for

continued dynamism in higher education curricula. The curriculum is constantly updated by

the affiliating University basing on the recommendations of the Board of Studies. The

exposure of faculty in recent advances and feedback from students, alumni and academic

experts give the right impetus and direction for development of the college. Introduction of

new courses and modification in existing ones with appropriate title change resulted in a

phenomenal increase in admission in many departments. The flexible option of mandatory

project work at the final year of UG and participation in JKC activities enhances the

employability of students. The college integrates the Self financed programmes with the

aided programmes in all its academic processing. The college is exploring the possibility of

designing new certificate courses in communicative language teaching and in the department

of sciences and commerce.

Realizing the significance of institutional accountability in the teaching learning and

evaluation process, the college implements adequate in-built mechanisms and adopts new

mechanisms in achieving the goals of academic excellence.. The review of admission process

in the recent past has paved the way for the introduction of B.Com (Computers) and B.Sc.

(Computers). The entry of freshers into the college is made comfortable with adequate

orientation. A special bridge course on English for Communication and other bridge course

material is taught by faculty drawn from all departments. The analysis of the academic need

in the first formative test; provision of improvement for the UG students in their First Year,

and Remedial Coaching, help the slow learners to adapt to the rigorous teaching learning

process and to make credible academic progress. ICT facility is extensively used for

Teaching-learning and evaluation by using 04 ICT enabled class rooms and the multimedia

facility. The faculty are provided with Internet facility. 512 Kbps bandwidth leased line of

BSNL connectivity for 20 computers on campus enables the access of e-resources for the

teaching learning process. The first two years of UG takes up Part-A exam which trains the

students for online English Practical exams. The faculty members are kept up-to-date in their

own discipline and on general professional competence through training programmes. The

strong feed-back mechanism helps faculty members to enhance their professional

competency. In addition to the general library some departments have departmental libraries.

The collaborations with TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) provide opportunities

for quality learning through project work and create better prospects for career options. The

final year projects in UG also promote scientific temper and creativity. As an institution with

32 years of successful career, the college has evolved an overall evaluation pattern with a

proportion of 25% of formative and 75% summative evaluation for theory courses and 50%

of formative and 50% of summative for laboratory courses.

Since teaching, research and extension are the three major dimensions of higher

education, the college promotes a research culture among faculty through consultancy and

collaboration. Currently the departments Hindi and other Faculty members from Chemistry,

Botany, and Zoology have applied for funding agencies like UGC, DST etc., for their

proposals on certain innovative issues.

At present Three Minor research projects have been sanctioned. 34 Research

Papers have been published in journals. Special consideration is given to the faculty

members who are involved in part time research regarding leave and pay as per the

Government norms. The Extension programme namely NSS offers a wide variety of

programmes for students. Every year a few of the NSS cadets are recognized nationally

for participating in the National parade.

Augmenting infrastructural facilities as a catalyst for Academic Excellence

has always been one among the significant concerns of the institution. The campus enables its

faculty with Internet and ICT facility. The computer centre is used extensively for academic

and administrative purposes with licensed software supplied by the higher authorities. The

well equipped Computer Lab with LCD projector provides the right ambiance for the

effective conduct of academic programmes. The General Library, the nerve centre of

learning at college has an open access system with a seating capacity of 25. The college has 4

laboratories for sciences (Physical and Biological) and others such as Computer Lab

/Language Lab which are used extensively for Teaching, Learning and Student Research. A

multipurpose hall with a dimension of 60 X 30ft. is available for the conduct of cultural

programmes, examination, for holding parent teacher meetings and for other college

functions. A proposal for construction of an Indoor Stadium with a capacity to accommodate

400 is under construction by A.P Government which is also used by the college students. An

outdoor play ground provides the students enough space for common programmes and to

have intense practice for sports. A small temporary canteen is existing in the campus catering

to the needs of the students and staff as well. Sufficient drinking water facility is provided

with the support of bore well run by a submersible motor.

The institution provides excellent student support services in varied forms to

facilitate the transformation among the students as visualized in the mission of the college.

The student council officers act as a link between the students and the institution through

various Committees. The economically needy students are encouraged by the award of

scholarships from the Government. These students are given special coaching for various

Competitive Exams through JKC. The college is disabled-friendly in terms of the curriculum,

infrastructure and support services. The departments adopt the teaching learning and

evaluation strategies of their UG programme with the objective of equipping the students to

successfully face competitive exams like BSRB, SSC, APPSC, EDCET, and TTC etc. The

departments encourage students to participate in state and national level of curricular and co-

curricular programmes. One student was selected for a 6 week leadership programme in

Jaisalmer National Camp.

The wall paper is an ongoing creative forum and the College magazine is planned to

be published from this year. The College has a very commendable track record in sports.

Sports students are given flexibility in attendance and evaluation. Deserving sports students

are given incentives by the well wishers. A student grievance redressal mechanism is

implemented at the college level, which is addressing all the grievances. The college has a

non-registered alumnae association for the development of the institution. There is

photocopying facility available for the students on in the office. The transformational change

experienced by the students from their entry level to the exit level stands as a proof of the

excellent student support system offered by the college.

The Leadership given by enlightened members of the various Committees and the

officers of the college facilitate in sustaining and reflecting the vision and mission of the

college through every activity of the Institution. The officers of the college work closely with

the other members of the administrative team namely the IQAC coordinator, Academic

Committee, Convener of Examination, Student Representatives to offer collective leadership

in all dimensions of organizational management.

The college being one of the best green campuses in the District responds to

eco concerns with its eco friendly initiatives. Green Audit, Energy conservation CFL and

LED bulbs, carbon neutrality, are some of the measures to develop the eco-consciousness of

the college community. Activity based learning is being used as a dominant pedagogy to

enhance the student centric learning. Starting of Interdisciplinary courses is encouraged by

the seed money generated from the various funds available.
